As a free fanzine, it comes out as and when the editorial team can put it out. Sourcing art for a free fanzine is always a struggle IME. For most people, for the most part....except calithena, who runs Fight On!. When he needs art, he just starts a thread at Vin's ODD74 boards and lots of people pile in to freely contribute. -lol- 'Course, there's a bigger pool of OD&D gamers than T&T gamers. One concern I have about using "public domain" artwork pulled from the web is simply that I don't know for sure that the artwork is truly public domain. For all I know, some jack wagon has stolen someone else's art, posted on the web under their own name and declared it public. I have no way of knowing for sure. Well, most public domain art is pretty obvious, as they're rather old woodcuts and hundred-year-old-or-more illustrations from storybooks and the like. www.fromoldbooks.org/Since I'm not a member of either of those forums, nor do I particularly plan to become members of those forums, it's not something within my scope of resources. I will state this again, as editor of TrollsZine magazine, it is my belief that it should be by, for, and of, Tunnels & Trolls players. Going to a non-T&T site to solicit artwork does not highlight artwork created by T&T players. But, those other sites have T&T players and fans. There's a ton of people out there who love T&T and who are not members here or at Trollhalla. But, I could understand it taking even more time already, though.

Bottom line, I will not go out to web to collect artwork, articles, or other material for TrollsZine, regardless the legality of its usage. Nor will I ask non T&T players to contribute freely to TrollsZine when it's the intent of the magazine to feature works by T&T players. I do think you need to loosen up. I mean, how do you even define a T&T player? Do have to currently play? What version? How often? Have played once and not really enjoyed it? You will find similar ideas and attitudes as expressed in T&T in people who have never seen or heard of it. How many potentially great T&T'ers are playing D&D because that's all they've ever been exposed to? Would you deny them submissions? The best thing is to pull in good people and try to get them interested in the game. Getting a piece of art printed in a semi-professional zine is a good way to do that.

Now you're just being a nit-pick.
If a non-T&T player submits artwork to TrollsZine that fits the theme of the issue or article, and wants to be associated with our community, I'm not going to turn him down. Okay? I'm not going to ask for their resume and check their references.
I suppose if a non-T&T player submits an article that isn't T&T specific, i.e. not a Solo adventure, a GM adventure, or an article about T&T rules or modifications, I'll consider it as well.
What I'm trying to say is I'm not going to go to non-T&T forums or public-domain websites to solicit material. There are a lot of reasons for this beyond what I have already stated.
1. My own personal reputation outside of the T&T community is unknown. If I show up on one of these forums and start a thread saying "Hey, I'm editing this magazine and I need submissions," I have no idea what kind of response I'll get - if any at all.
2. I don't have the experience to discern which submissions are good and legal and which ones aren't. All the submissions I've received so far are from people I have had some contact with through here and Trollhalla, and I have a reasonable level of trust in them. Going outside our community opens me up to a level of risk that I'm not willing to bear. If you can afford to defend yourself against an infringement lawsuit, that's your choice. I can't, so I'm going to minimize the risk as much as possible.
3. I think the way to increase T&T's exposure is to publish, advertise, and distribute the magazine and other related T&T products. I don't believe this is accomplished by publicly asking for submissions. We might pick up a few readers here and there, but not to the scale we'd like.
Perhaps when I'm done with TZ4 (and possibly TZ5 & 6), you'd be willing to take over and run the magazine the way you want to run it.

Perhaps when I'm done with TZ4 (and possibly TZ5 & 6), you'd be willing to take over and run the magazine the way you want to run it. It really sounds like you want to quit the job and hand the reigns to someone else. I'm sorry to hear that, considering the herculean effort that went into publishing the first three issues. It will be hard to find someone to replace you, and no, of course I do not want the job. I'd be no good at it. But as pointed out already finding artwork is the major headache for any publication without a ton of cash, and we should not discount using all avenues to find it. This is getting a bit redundant. I'll bow out of the discussion now.

Hey! I think you're reading too much into Sligo's comments here. We are on the internet and have to take each-other at face value, even though we can't see each-other's faces! I assume that if Sligo wanted to quit, he would, and he hasn't done so - maybe we could ratchet down the inferences and forecasts of doom guys?

One approach to getting more art is to provide a list of some of the elements in the magazine. Stock fantasy stuff (weapons, delvers being crushed by falling rocks, etc...) is fine - but like the example you gave (many zombie images vs. no relevant zombie content), it's always nicer to have something to work off of when making something to order.
So - what does the "index" of TZ4 look like? Perhaps with this information, yon artists might see something that makes them scribble and draw appropriate/relevant materials...
EDIT: How to write a solo part 3 - Simon Rafe The House of Saxon - concluding solo - Tom Grimshaw The Dungeon of the Dreamstones by Stephen Dove Point Based Character Creation - Tom Grimshaw & Dan Prentice Warrior Subtypes - Tom Grimshaw The Unlucky Unicorn - David, Zachary and Joshua Ullery 7.5e T&T errata by Patrice Geille and KSA A T&T round up - Dan Prentice An Island Adventure - Justin Williams Dogs in T&T - Justin Williams
Then there was the data crash. PG's recovery brought up:
sonofthor (mui talented artist BTW) If you want, I could do an introductory write up for Imajapoor. It's my setting for T&T.
wilowisp I'd like to offer my scenario "The Great Goblin Hunt". My players really enjoyed it, and suggested I put it forward. I've adapted it a little from play experience, and added some suggestions if the GM or players don't want an all fairy game. I'd love to see it edited and put in Trollzine!
mgtremaine's Bards of Cala (looks like it's waiting for TZ5?)
And here's some art requests: Hmm... I can thing of some artwork for this solo. Here are some suggestions if you want to give it a stab:
1. A big padlock being picked using a small, steel shard. The padlock is holding two ends of a chain. One chain is connected to a loop on the floor. The other chain is threaded through a series of shackles that are holding a bunch of prisoners.
2. The prisoner (the one who picked the lock) sneaking around a corner in an underground hallway.
3. The prisoner, being held by a bunch of guards, bowing before the Death Goddess (you know, the one in Arena of Khazan)
4. A group of guards leading two large wolves (dire-wolves, specifically) toward you down a tunnel. Two of the guards have self bows. The rest have swords. All are wearing a uniform over leather armor.
5. A guy using a sword to lever open a sewer grate on the floor.

Ragnorakk, thanks. I just checked through, the article that needs the artwork is the Mass Combat article. Everything else is pretty much covered.
The art suggestions you listed there are from my own solo, Beneath the Arena, which we've decided is not going to be in TZ4. We're using Down Time instead, and though more pics for it would be nice, they aren't needed.

Sligo, so I finally registered after nearly 2 years lurking.
As far as the artwork, I will be reading this zine for the articles. I will not complain if some article do not have artwork.

its dead, forget it, move on. You say that but, the fact that so many people want it shows it is anything but. It may be taking a lifetime and christmas may very well arrive before it does but, the material has been submitted for the most part and given it's only a somewhat bizzare desire for all original art, a little formatting, maybe some proof reading that's holding it back. So i'd say TZ is anything but dead as long as there is both a place and a desire for it.
