I was thinking the other day what authors or stories have you read that immediately made you think of Tunnels & Trolls?
What stories have the unique mix of humor & mayhem.
I love Robert E. Howard and other pulp authors, but they don't usually immediately put my head in T&T space if you know what I mean. ;D (Although Henry Kuttner's Elak of Atlantis has some of the T&T humor in it )
I'd put at the top of my list a relatively new Texas author A. Lee Martinez particularly the following.
In the Company of Ogres: www.goodreads.com/book/show/109986.In_the_Company_of_Ogres
Too Many Curses: www.goodreads.com/book/show/3029853-too-many-curses
A Nameless Witch: www.goodreads.com/book/show/225605.A_Nameless_Witch
Of these books In the Company of Ogres positively screams T&T and for reading in that vein I can't recommend it highly enough.
Glen Cook's Garret Files: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_P.I.
Although more serious Cook's Garret series still has a real T&T feel for me and usually make for a fun, quick reads that have still managed to give me some interesting ideas for my game world.
Robert Lynn Asprin's Myth series, especially the first three or four books. www.goodreads.com/series/42225-myth-adventures
I'd love to say Terry Pratchett and I do love his books deeply, however for me his world just doesn't ring the T&T bell in my head for me.
I might also mention some of the novels of Lawrence Watt-Evans.
With a Single Spell: www.goodreads.com/book/show/320216.With_a_Single_Spell
The Misenchanted Sword: www.goodreads.com/book/show/317497.The_Misenchanted_Sword
I'd also love to mention his Lords of Dus series: www.goodreads.com/series/51062-lords-of-dus
However while it is a little known but I think very interesting series it does not quite have the T&T feel. Although the first book has a glimmer of it in a dark kind of way.
Anyway I don't want to ramble on, I want to know what stories ( short, long or novella! ) and authors most resonate T&T for you?
