DELVE 6. Sunday 24th May 2020. Campaign year: Autumn 501. Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am. GM: Schmee. Delvers: DENA (Pippy) 2nd level wizard; KANDI (Scally) 1st level warrior. Locations: Venefax. DENA and KANDI rose early on Thursday and breakfasted in the Scorpion’s Sting tavern. NIKOLAI did not emerge from his room; he was suffering the after effects of a stolen bottle of fairy mead and could not join the party. In the breakfast room, the other two delvers met and spoke with a knight errant, Sir Edward the Lion, who’d been sent from Yellowport to investigate the mystery of the Gob-Gobbler. They teamed up with Sir Edward and headed out to the ruined farmhouse (where the Gob-Gobbler’s victims were last seen). They saw Fonzie, the Master of The Market, heading across the plains. They followed him; Sir Edward staying back because of his noisy armour. Fonzie went into the old farmhouse – through a window they saw him with two ruffians, getting into a monster costume fitted with a bellows full of knock-out gas. The ruffians came to the front door – hiding in the shrubbery DENA cast the spell of LAW upon them, commanding one to lead the other to the main road. Commentary: Instead of the T&T spell list, we use the spells from the Sorcery gamebooks, where each magical effect is represented by a three-letter code. LAW is a spell of Command, like T&T’s “Obey Me!”. The basic six spells for a 1st level wizard are: ZAP, HOT, LAW, DUM, FOF and WAL. Link with more details gamebooks.org/Series/15/Show With the ruffians gone, the delvers confronted Fonzie in the farmhouse, who was still getting dressed up. He surrendered and confessed he’d been using the gas to knock out the villagers and sell them into slavery. He also admitted to murdering the previous adventuring party while they were insensible – and that he took from them the Book of Seven Sages and hid it in his market office. The delvers took him back to Venefax to face trial; the villagers rewarded them with a suit of magic chainmail. End of delve #6.

DELVE 7.
Sunday 31st May 2020.
Campaign year: Autumn 501.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 11.00 pm.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: NIKOLAI (Glyn) 2nd level healer; DENA (Pippy) 2nd level wizard; KANDI (Scally) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Venefax; Yellowport.
NIKOLAI had recovered from his fairy mead episode and rejoined the party. He had to pay compensation to the landlord (Dennis) for the damage he had done – eventually the delvers bargained him down to 10 gp if NIKOLAI cleaned up after himself. The delvers then left Venefax heading south-west by road on a bright autumn morning.
They arrived in Yellowport shortly before the city gates closed for the night. They went to the Gold Dust tavern (near the city gates) and returned the Book of Seven Sages to Pyletes the Sage, who rewarded them with the blessing of the craftsman god Molhern.
Commentary: Molhern is the god of knowledge, magic and smithing. His blessing lets a delver re-roll a failed Saving Roll on IQ.
They then listened to the tale of Bertie the Bard, who sang of the rich tomb of the Priest–King Xinoc in the northern wastes; and afterwards he told them of the coalition army of General Beledai, camped along the northern borders of Sokara, preparing for invasion. The delvers went to the market in Brimstone Plaza and sold the magical chainmail; using the money to buy weapons, armour, equipment and other supplies for a planned trek north.
Thus ended delve #7.

DELVE 6. Commentary: Instead of the T&T spell list, we use the spells from the Sorcery gamebooks, where each magical effect is represented by a three-letter code. LAW is a spell of Command, like T&T’s “Obey Me!”. The basic six spells for a 1st level wizard are: ZAP, HOT, LAW, DUM, FOF and WAL. Link with more details gamebooks.org/Series/15/ShowI'm enjoying the write up, but even more I (and I'm sure others) would appreciate you elaborating on what works, what needs additional tweaking to make this work in your game. (Either here or in the characters and magic forum). I think of things like spell cost, learning new spells... (There are all sorts of approaches in T&T: I think I read the other day of someone who substituted GURPS (wow, a high crunch system) apn is playing with chaos magic, and I'm personally convinced the whole system can be "saved" (defined as dumping WIZ, keeping the essense of the spells) by swiping Dragonbane's system of a derived stat and dipping into bodily health. (Derived stats? Is that heresy or just another welcome house rule?)

Loving memory lane… the Gob-Gobler TPK was sad but the life of a delver is fraught with danger!
Currently I play the party’s wizard and can talk about magic a little (I’m no expert!). Learning spells needs to be done from a book or from the wizards college on Dweomer; an island to the south (it’ll be on the maps that Schmee posted).
Casting spells is an INT check (2d6+INT) against the level of the spell being cast; higher level spells have greater effect but casting above your level is perilous!!
Once cast (or not) you lose WIZ points equal to 1d6 per spell level (don’t go to 0, you’ll die!)
As the check is rolled the cry of “is it DARO?!” Can be heard across the zoom chat🤣

Thanks mosker! Scally has commented above, but I can add a few more details. The original Sorcery books had 48 spells, but we expanded this to 216. A wizard gets a new random spell at each level, but can also buy them in-game as Scally mentioned - the wizards' colleges on Sorcerer's Isle charge 1,000 to 2,000 gp, for example.
The WIZ attribute is fixed at 10 points per delver level, and to cast a spell you choose your magical effect and agree a spell level with the GM. For example, ZAP does IQ x spell level in hits to one target (like "Take That, You Fiend!"); HOT delivers your IQ in hits to one target per spell level.
The LAW spell that was used in delve #6 was set at the combined level of the targets; FOF (field-of-force, or sometimes "eff off") gives you bonus armour equal to IQ for 1 round per level. In the main however, the player wizard and the GM negotiate the spell level and effect based on the general description of the spell.
The wizard must then pass a Saving Roll on IQ at the level of the spell. A roll of 1 & 2 is a fumble, with unexpected effect (unless you've a wizard's staff, the fumble is avoided but your staff is broken).
If the Saving Roll is passed, the WIZ cost is 1 die per spell level - these are exploders (reroll and add 6s) if casting a spell at a level above your wizard level; and imploders (6s count as 0) if casting a spell below your level. Excess spell cost more than your remaining WIZ comes off CON.
There are few other rules we use (e.g to allow Rogues to attempt spellcasting, and a DEX Saving Throw at the same level as the IQ roll if casting under difficult circumstances), but the above covers the basics. Thanks again for asking!

DELVE 8.
Sunday 14th June 2020.
Campaign year: Winter 501.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: NIKOLAI (Glyn) 2nd level healer; DENA (Pippy) 2nd level wizard; KANDI (Scally) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Yellowport; Marlock City; Castle of the Dragon Knights.
The delvers were breakfasting at the Gold Dust tavern in Yellowport. They met Pyletes the Sage again, who asked them to escort him and the Book of the Seven Sages to Marlock City, where he would be able to catch a barge upriver to his monastery. On the road, they encountered Yanryt the Son, a peerless swordsman, who offered to train them with his skills in the city of Caran Baru if they should slay for him the Black Knight of Dragon Castle. That lunchtime, they set out with Pyletes on the road to Trefoille.
In the ruined city of Trefoille, Clive the Carpenter told them how the city was razed to ground by the army of General Marlock, for resisting his siege. It is now being rebuilt, to get the local economy moving again. The delvers camped in the shell of a ruined tavern, then set out early on the long road to Marlock City. On the road, they were accosted by a drunken sentry, who scuffled with KANDI and was pacified by DENA’s magic.
They arrived in Marlock City late that day, just as the city gates were closing for the night. They saw the remains of traitors to General Marlock hanging from the city walls. They spent the night in the Three Rings tavern where they met Thomas the Troubadour. Thomas told them of his adventure in the land of beast-men, where he escaped by soothing their ferocity with his songs. He then told them of Davo the Hermit who lives on the foothills of the Spine of Harkun, and the quest of the Greatest Story Ever Told.
In the morning, Pyletes departed and took a riverboat north. The delvers set off on foot, following the east bank of the river; DENA caught a smoulder fish by the riverside. Continuing north, they spoke to Francis the Ferryman, who told them they were near the river’s source and not far from the Castle of the Dragon Knights. The delvers headed east to the Castle and spoke to the squire of the Blue Knight. The knights fight with blunted weapons, wagering their arms and armour against victory, but the Black Knight fights only to the death. DENA challenged the Black Knight to single combat, and slew him with a magic thunderbolt. The delvers were hosted by the other knights, healed of their injuries & invited to a celebration feast.
Commentary: DENA had used a high-level ZAP spell to blast the wicked knight into dust.

DELVE 9.
Saturday 20th June 2020.
Campaign year: Winter 501.

Locations: Castle of the Dragon Knights; Caran Baru.
The delvers attended a twelve-course feast at the Castle of the Dragon Knights. They spoke with one of the knights seated near them, Sir Kevin, about the nature of knighthood. The first course was the soup course; the second the sprout course; the third the carrot course. As the fourth (potato) course was being served, the delvers made their excuses and left. They travelled south-east into the Bronze Hills, where they spoke to some of the miners, but they soon left and headed east to the town of Caran Baru.
Commentary: Caran Baru is a garrison town and mining town, halfway between the cities of the southern coast and the mountain fortress of Velis Corin.
In Caran Baru, the delvers made for the Blue Griffon tavern and returned the Black Dragon shield to Yanryt the Son. They asked Yanryt for his training in the arts of battle, but he told them that they no longer needed it, which was indeed true. They then spoke to some of the patrons in the bar, and discovered that one of the knights of Baroness Ravayne, Sir Bredubar, was plotting against her.
Commentary: The delvers gained a bunch of adventure points for completing Yanryt's quest. The Baroness of Ravayne is the ruler of the neighbouring realm of Golnir
That was the end of delve #9.

DELVE 10.
Saturday 27th June 2020.
Campaign year: Spring 502.
Online, ca. 7.30 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: NIKOLAI (Glyn) 2nd level healer; KANDI (Scally) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Caran Baru; Spine of Harkun; Velis Corin; Bronze Hills; Trefoille; Marlock City; Curstmoor; Marlock City (again).
The delvers were in Caran Baru for the first day of spring. Dena was feeling unwell, probably the after-effects of her magic that she used against the Black Knight, so she stayed to recuperate while NIKOLAI and KANDI looked around town. KANDI visited the temple of the war-god, Tyrnai: she viewed the statue of the god with its suit of golden mail; and spoke to the priests; she learned of the ‘Ceremony of the Wrathful Blow’. NIKOLAI visited the temple of the Three Fortunes: he viewed the Tapestry of Fate and spoke to the priestesses.
Commentary: The ceremony of the Wrathful Blow is reserved for followers of the war god Tyrnai who choose to leave the faith. It consists of being whacked in the face by the biggest priest available. (Afterwards you're free to leave.)
NIKOLAI & KANDI then left town, taking the north road. The delvers left the road and headed into the western mountains. They found a large cave at the foot of a wooded hill; investigating they found that it was full of dozens of wolves. NIKOLAI brandished his weapons and tried to intimidate the wolves; KANDI drew an arrow to her bow and shot at them. Neither of these acts had the desired effect; six large wolves can forward to attack them. The delvers fled up a nearby pine tree; NIKOLAI was savaged in the leg and lifted to safety by KANDI. In the tree, KANDI lit a fire by rubbing sticks together; with this she lit some pine-cones and the delvers both cast the burning cones at the wolves, striking one on the nose. Fearing the flames, the wolves fled; allowing the delvers to climb back down and return to the road.
They then took the road to the gates of Velis Corin, the citadel that guards the only pass through the mountains. There they were refused entry by the Knights of the Shield. They tried to bribe a merchant to sneak them inside hidden in a barrel, but could not afford his fee. The delvers then returned to Caran Baru and checked back in to the Blue Griffon tavern (Dena was still incapacitated). NIKOLAI sold his shield to buy some provisions. After some debate, they decided to take the south road back to the coastal cities.
On the road, KANDI was (falsely) accused of murder by a troop of guards. Her attempts to protest innocence were not successful, so they fled, hiding in the Bronze Hills until the coast was clear. Heading south again, they checked in to the Weary Pilgrim, a roadside tavern on the half-way point of the road. The innkeeper told them of the Tomb of the Wizard King in the Forest of Larun (a great woodland in the west of Sokara); and implied that something of importance was happening in the Coldbleak Mountains to the east. They also learned of the ancient wizard Woztoz, who is imprisoned in his Ruby Citadel on the Great Steppes, in the the cold north. Further on the road south, KANDI caught her foot in a rusty man-trap that had been carelessly discarded by the roadside.
Passing through the ruined city of Trefoille, the delvers made it to Marlock City by nightfall. In the city, the delvers attempted to get an audience with the Protector-General; but were turned away, and advised to visit his brother in Yellowport instead. At the House of Priests, the spoke to the Chief Administrator, who showed them a vision of the city in a magic orb. The orb showed the city besieged by invisible sky demons, who have been menacing the city ever since the demigod Sulveneris (one of the sons of Elnir) had been imprisoned on Devil’s Peak. The Chief Administrator asked them to climb the Peak and free the demigod, to save the city.
Commentary: The House of Priests is the centre of civic administration in Marlock City (and for the rest of Sokara too).
The delvers left Marlock and headed north over the haunted Curstmoor, heading for Devil's Peak. As night fell on the first day, they saw a herd of fairy horses galloping near. They leapt on to the horses’ backs and were carried through the solid slope of a fairy hill into fairyland. There they met the fairies but angered the fairy queen, who laid a spell upon them. They awoke a month later, with no memory of the time passed. They were lying on the surf of a beach, with all of their possessions lost; except for a few strange items. Speaking to a fisherwoman, they found that they were at the mouth of the River Grimm, near Marlock City. On the way back to the city, NIKOLAI found an ink sac on the shore. At Marlock City they each sold one of the items (a silver nugget) to buy provisions for a planned journey back north.
That was the end of a rather eventful delve #10.

DELVE 11.
Friday 3rd July 2020.
Campaign year: Spring 502.
Online, ca. 8.00 pm – 1.00 am.

Delvers: NIKOLAI (Glyn) 2nd level healer; DENA (Pippy) 2nd level wizard; BARTON (Savage) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Marlock City; Trefoille; Yellowport; Stinking River; Venefax; Blessed Springs.
NIKOLAI and KANDI had returned to Marlock City after a misadventure in Fairyland. KANDI was taken ill from swallowing sea-water and was taken away to the chapel of the priests of Maka. NIKOLAI visited the Three Rings tavern and spoke to the innkeeper, a secret member of the underground rebels, who introduced him to his nephew BARTON, recently demobilised from the Sokaran army, who was looking to leave town in a hurry. NIKOLAI & BARTON had lost their maps, but took directions from the innkeeper to take the road east to Trefoille. On the road, NIKOLAI caught his foot in an abandoned animal trap, injuring him quite badly. They found Trefoille still in ruins, and spoke to some of the soldiers there about the coming war in the north.
They left Trefoille and arrived in Yellowport, where they met DENA, recently arrived from Caran Baru as a passenger on a merchant caravan. At Yellowport, the delvers gained an audience with Marley Marlock, the Provost Marshal. He offered them much gold and a noble title if they were to travel to the Coldbleak Mountains and slay the rebel leader Nergan Corin, the son of the old king. They then went to the market, and stocked up on maps, as well as cold-weather & mountain wilderness gear. They left town heading north along the banks of the Stinking River.
The delvers reached the village of High Therys, where the Stinking River cuts a chasm through the land. The delvers solved the mystery of three ghosts who had made the villagers set them a feast every night for 7 years; the ghosts were really villainous villagers covered in flour.
Commentary: The Stinking River brings rich deposits of sulphur down to Yellowport, where it is extracted and sold to the wizards' guilds - lucrative but smelly work
They left High Therys and travelled overland to Venefax. After a short stay, they followed the coast-road north to Blessed Springs, where they bought some potions from an alchemist. They then went to the Blessed Ale tavern and learned of about the catoblepas, a horrible monster bothering the town. The delvers found the catoblepas in its cave above the town and DENA slew it with magic; the delvers took its treasures. They made plans for an expedition into the Coldbleak Mountains.
Commentary: The alchemists at Blessed Springs sell six types of potion (one for each prime attribute). A Luck Potion, for example, adds two dice DARO to your LK for one Saving Roll or encounter. They also make special potions of Healing and Magic, which restore CON or WIZ to maximum.
That was delve #11, where we welcomed new delver BARTON !

DELVE 12.
Thursday 9th July 2020.
Campaign year: Spring 502.
Online, ca. 8.00 pm – 1.00 am.

Delvers: NIKOLAI (Glyn) 2nd level healer; KANDI (Scally) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Blessed Springs; Farmlands; Caran Baru; Spine of Harkun; Caran Baru; Forest of Larun; Tomb of the Wizard-king; Devil’s Peak; Marlock City.
NIKOLAI, DENA and BARTON were in Blessed Springs after defeating the dreaded catoblepas. DENA and BARTON were suffering after-effects of the catoblepas’ poisoned breath, and were self-isolating. NIKOLAI visited the springs, where he met KANDI – she had been brought here by ship, under orders of the priesthood of Maka to take the holy waters. After their curative effect she was declared fit to work, and resolved with NIKOLAI to set out in search of new quests.
Together they headed north across the Farmlands towards Caran Baru. There they bought mining permits and searched the Bronze Hills for silver, but found nothing. They then visited the slave market, where they bought & set free Pickwick, a bird-man slave (even though a rich merchant offered them a high price after bidding had closed). Having spent all their money, they then decided to explore the northern mountains, travelling there by road.
Commentary: We will meet Pickwick again, later in the tales of delving.
NIKOLAI and KANDI were exploring the eastern side of the Spine of Harkun, where the mountains run down to the sea. They attempted to scale the mountains, and were initially unsuccessful; but KANDI later managed to reach a high ledge, leaving NIKOLAI far below. KANDI navigated a cursed road that made her water-supply undrinkable and arrived at a cave high in the peaks. Inside the cave she spoke with Davo the Hermit, who revealed the secret of The Greatest Story Ever Told. KANDI then left, and climbed back down to meet up with NIKOLAI at the base of the mountains.
Commentary: The secret of the Greatest Story was worth a bonanza of 1,000 ap !
They returned to Caran Baru; selling a few items they bought new equipment and very soon left town, heading into the Forest of Larun. There they found the ancient Tomb of the Wizard-king, protected by a demon door. After speaking to the door demon, they realised that they did not know the password, so could not enter.
Leaving the forest, they journeyed south to Devil’s Peak. Climbing the sheer sides of the Peak using a length of rope, they reached the top; although KANDI was hurt quite badly after a fall; NIKOLAI used his herbs to heal her injuries. There they found a blue-skinned demigod imprisoned by storm demons. They fought the demons, with little success until they used their slings to slay one of them. Then, NIKOLAI used a holy symbol to keep the demons at bay, while KANDI cut the bonds holding the demigod.
The sky god rose into the air with a shout, and smote the demons; KANDI and NIKOLAI were blasted off the mountain-top, but were miraculously unharmed (and supernaturally invigorated by the god’s power). Returning to Marlock City, they met with the chief administrator at the House of Priests, who arranged for (almost) all of the high clerics of the city to bless NIKOLAI and KANDI with the gods’ favour.
Commentary: The invigorating power of the god gave them both a permanent buff worth 2 dice of CON.
...and that was the end of (rhyming) delve #12

Delve 12 was such a win for greedy delvers!! 1000ap and 2 dice to CON turned Kandi into a bit of a powerhouse for the early areas (Sokara, Golnir and the Violet Ocean). Meeting Davo the Hermit was great but I like to think Kandi misinterpreted his message… he told her that ‘Yours is the greatest story ever told’, meaning that of the delving party. Kandi took it personally though and her ego inflated as she thought HERS was the greatest story!
Great times! She also argued with Barton about who was the best warrior in the party!
A personal note: I really appreciate these lockdown delves; they definitely helped to keep me sane during a trying time. Thank you Schmee (and everyone else)!!

DELVE #13.
TWO-THIRDS OF DELVERS MINERALISED BY DRAGON, TREASURE-LADEN SURVIVOR FLEES ISLAND.
Thursday 16th July 2020.
Campaign year: Spring 502.
Online, ca. 8.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: NIKOLAI (Glyn) 2nd level healer; KANDI (Scally) 2nd level warrior; DENA (Pippy) 2nd level wizard.
Locations: Marlock City & Blessed Springs; Shadar Tor; Atlantis; Lake of the Sea Dragon; Blessed Springs (again).
NIKOLAI and KANDI were in Marlock City. DENA was in Blessed Springs.
• NIKOLAI explored the town and tried (unsuccessfully) to rescue a townsperson from a burning building.
• KANDI visited the merchants’ guild and received a quest to bring back the head of notorious pirate Amcha One-Eye of the Unnumbered Isles.
• DENA took divination with the alchemist of Blessed Springs, and under his direction travelled south by road, stopping at the town of Cadmium (on the shores the Lake of the Sea Dragon) and then the Weary Pilgrim way-tavern, where she learned of the lost wizard Woztoz.
Meeting up outside Marlock City, the three delvers travelled along the coast road to the Shadar Tor. On the way they spoke with refugees from Trefoille, now living in a shanty town around an enchanted spring. KANDI gave them some food & DENA gave them her smoulder fish. At the Shadar Tor, DENA decoded the magic runes which described a spell of water-breathing.
Commentary: A smoulder fish is the only thing that can survive in the sulphur-laden waters of the Stinking River. The spell that DENA learned from the runes written on the Tor was GIL.
Under the influence of the magic, KANDI and NIKOLAI waded out into the deep ocean and explored the realm below the waves (DENA remained in the shallows). KANDI & NIKOLAI returned after fighting a fish-man sentry and taking his coral jewellery. Returning to the shore, the delvers towelled off and took the road to Trefoille. At the ruined city, they spoke to a foreman in charge of repairs who told them of the sea dragon and his love for silver.
Commentary: The Sea Dragon lives in the lake that bears his name, the source of both the Stinking River and of the rich sulphur deposits.
Leaving Trefoille behind, the delvers took the north road to the village of Cadmium on the shores of the Lake of the Sea Dragon. They hired a fishing boat and sailed out on to the lake. The dragon appeared from beneath the surface and demanded a silver nugget, which DENA gave him. The dragon sank beneath the waves, but the delvers grabbed hold of its tail and were dragged through the water into a submerged cave full of treasure.
They tried to hide from the dragon behind a pile of coins; DENA and KANDI managed to do so, but NIKOLAI was spotted. NIKOLAI briefly spoke to the angry dragon, then was joined by DENA who emerged from hiding. The dragon’s breath turned them into a yellow dust, which the dragon each scooped into a bottle before swimming away. The sole survivor, KANDI, took the bottles and as much treasure as she could carry and escaped out of a sinkhole onto an island in the middle of the lake. There she flagged down a passing fisherman and made it to the shore.
At Cadmium village she bought a horse-and-cart. Seeking advice on how to revive NIKOLAI and DENA, she travelled east to Blessed Springs. At the Springs, KANDI visited the healing waters & scattered the dust, bringing NIKOLAI and DENA back to life.
