Low-key delves are often the best for character development and interesting interactions. I’m sure I remember many a delve where we spoke to a random tat peddler on the road; plus characters like Joanie, Miller and Pickwick wouldn’t be who they are but not for low-key delves! Good point, Scal. A lot of the RP-ing with random/improvised characters doesn't come across in the summaries I've been posting.

DELVE 30.
NORTHERN FORTRESS CAPTURED BY REBELS
Monday 12th October 2020.
Online, ca. 8.30 pm – 12.30 am.
Campaign year: Early spring 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 2nd level rogue; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior; FERDINAND (Pippy) 3rd level warrior.
Locations: Conflass; Forest of Larun; Druids’ Grove; Bronze Hills; Castle of the Dragon Knights; Spine of Harkun; General Beledai’s camp; Velis Corin; General Beledai’s camp (again); Velis Corin (again).
The delvers travelled east from Conflass into the land of Sokara. They then turned north-east to the Forest of Larun, where they searched for the Druids’ Grove. Locating the Grove, they bypassed the sanity-blasting spells wound about it and knocked on a door they spotted in an tree. The Willow Druid emerged and exchanged their oak staff for a willow staff; they were instructed to return this to the Oak Druid on the Isle of Druids.
From the Forest, they headed north through the Bronze Hills. Passing through the Western Wilderness and, in anticipation of an arduous crossing of the northern mountains, sent all but one of their squires west to Dragon Castle.
At the foot of the mountains the delvers sent their last squire, their horses & their dogs to Dragon Castle. They then entered a cave where, in the previous spring, KANDI and her late friend Nikolai had escaped from a pack of ravenous wolves. The cave was now empty – an iron ladder at the back let into a series of underground galleries which made a secret route through the mountains.
At Beledai’s camp the delvers met with the generals and took on a mission to infiltrate Velis Corin and open the gates with a pre-arranged signal to a forward band of scouts. They told Beledai of the caves; he planned to send a strong force of guards to assault the southern gate in tandem.
Commentary: General Beledai (perhaps played by Brian Blessed in the imaginary film adaptation) is overall commander of the northern allied armies, gathered for an escalade on Velis Corin.
Approaching the Great Gate of the north; the delvers (recognised as the slayers of Marley Marlock) were captured (after presenting an extremely unconvincing story) and brutally tortured. They all managed not to confess and were released north in a terrible state (and minus all equipment).
Back at Beledai’s camp they were restocked by Beledai with army surplus gear and also supplied with some captured officers’ passes. With these they managed to re-enter Velis Corin. There KANDI & BARTON scoured the dungeons for their lost gear while FERDINAND & PATTI crept into the winch tower. Slaying the tower guards they opened the gate and the citadel fell to Beledai’s forces. Afterwards, Beledai received the delvers; Prince Nergan came up from the Coldbleaks and there was a great feast in their honour.

DELVE 31.
TOWN RAVAGED BY DRAGON, DELVERS INTERVENE
Friday 16th October 2020.
Online, ca. 8.30 pm – 12.00 am.
Campaign year: Early spring 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 2nd level rogue; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior; FERDINAND (Pippy) 3rd level warrior.
Locations: Velis Corin; General Beledai’s camp; Castle of the Dragon Knights; Forest of Larun; Tomb of the Wizard-king; Grimm River; Conflass; Rainbow River; Haunted Hills.
THE DELVERS departed Velis Corin to the north & bought weapons at Beledai’s camp. Passing back through the citadel they headed south-west to Dragon Castle. There they met with squire Joanie and were re-united with their animals.
Commentary: We'll learn more of Joanie's adventures later in the campaign.
Joanie told them of the departure of their squires Gino & Annetta for Castle Ravyane. Travelling south into the Forest of Larun, the delvers visited again the Tomb of the Wizard King. Passing through the Forest to the south, they and spoke to a fur-trapper near Devil’s Peak, learning of a great bird that has taken to nesting at the top of the spire.
Heading west by the bridge over the Grimm, they met refugees from Golnir. The town of Conflass had been razed by a dragon, the grand-dame of the one they slew in the Haunted Hills. The sending of Estragon came to them and told them they must slay this dragon too.
Heading up the Rainbow river, they met some bandits on the way; whom they befriended. Squire Joanie joined the bandits; she wanted to become an adventurer like KANDI. In the Haunted Hills, they met a mad old man who cursed away their blessings. They then found the dragon and slew it in a terrible battle.
Delve #31. The second Dragon was a much tougher fight than the last one but the delvers prevailed.

Back to back big delving moments!!
Overthrowing the citadel of Velis Corin was a big moment; along with the beast helmet incident and being knighted at Castle Revayne, we had definitely planted our flag hard on the feudal side of the war. I think we quickly lost a bit of momentum on this quest line though… we’ll see why soon enough (no spoilers)😁
The second dragon was much tougher, I remember, probably because we weren’t glugging every potion going before the fight!🤣🤣

DELVE 32.
Thursday 22nd October 2020.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 1.00 am.
Campaign year: Mid-spring 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: PATTI (Glyn) 2nd level rogue; FERDINAND (Pippy) 3rd level warrior.
Locations: Haunted Hills; Wheatfields; Castle Ravayne; Chard’s Inn; Castle Ravayne; Rese River; Old Harkuna; Singing Forest; Delpton.
KANDI & BARTON were laid low by dragon-sickness. PATTI & FERDINAND made a stretcher for them, and carried them to Wheatfields without incident. They withdrew money at the merchants’ guild, leaving Kandi & Barton in the merchants’ safe-keeping. PATTI & FERDINAND then travelled to Castle Ravayne by road, stopping briefly at Chard’s Inn for some free bed-and-breakfast. The delvers met some gypsies, who sold them a rabbit’s foot and prophesied that they would one day stand on the battlements of their own castle.
Commentary: The merchants' guild in Sokara and Golnir offers banking services to keep the delvers' gold pieces safe, but charges 10% on withdrawals.
Further down the road, they spoke to some merchants, who told them of the plot of the Knight of the Long Knife against the Baroness. At Castle Ravayne, they spent money on weapons and armour; then spoke to their friend Sir Debrumas about intrigue at the court and the constant presence of spies.
Leaving Golnir for a time, the delvers travelled west over the Rese river into Old Harkuna. A peasant tending a ruined castle told them of the High King of all Harkuna, and how he lies sleeping; waiting to be awoken once more. In the Singing Forest, they fought against a giant chameleon; PATTI’s knowledge of reptology enabled them to disguise themselves from the chameleon’s attack by smearing themselves with rotten fruit. They then returned back to the Golnirean town of Delpton.
Commentary: Old Harkuna is the ancestral homeland of the High King, once ruler from sea-to-shining-sea, but in ages past deposed by Uttakin invaders, who still rule the lands west of the Rese. The Singing Forest is so-called for the flocks of nightingales that nest there. Delpton is widely regarded as the least interesting of all the towns in the fantastical realms, where literally nothing ever happens.
Delve #32: Some interesting encounters this time for our delving duo. Will the prophecy delivered by the travelling people come true? Maybe!? (Apologies for the long break since the last update - it's been a bit busy here!)

Delve 32 WANDERING IN GOLNIR AND OLD HARKUNA ? I forgot to put a tabloid-style headline in for delve #32 - your suggestion is a good one! The next delve will have one.

DELVE 33.
TREACHERY EXPOSED IN PALACE SHOCK
Tuesday 27th October 2020.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
Campaign year: Late spring 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; FERDINAND (Pippy) 3rd level warrior.
Locations: Wheatfields/Delpton; Castle Ravayne; River Rese; Old Harkuna; Thurlings; Hall of Heroes.
From Delpton, FERDINAND sent a letter to KANDI by pigeon post. On receipt, KANDI left the merchants’ guild in Wheatfields. In the town square, she spoke to a stonemason about works conducted on Sir Bredubar’s castle. FERDINAND travelled from Delpton to Wheatfields, and met up with KANDI. Inside a nearby tavern they found the stonemason dead!
The delvers made the short journey to Ravayne. There they denounced Sir Bredubar as plotting a coup before the Baroness. Their accusation was backed up by Sir Debrumas & his agents. Sir Bredubar was imprisoned and the court dismissed.
Commentary: Sir B had been building up his castle defences in anticipation of a forthcoming civil war.
Leaving Golnir for a second time the delvers crossed the river Rese into Old Harkuna. There they visited the sorry town of Thurlings & the great inn known as the Hall of Heroes. At the latter, they spoke to the landlord, some farmers & some adventurers about the nature of the Uttakin & monster Grindel that haunts the Mixen Sumps. They then checked into the inn for the night.
Commentary: The Hall of Heroes is a very large inn and associated community built onto a bridge over the Ruby River.
Delve #33 marked the delver's first full expedition into the western lands of Harkuna (apart from a brief trip to the Singing Forest last delve). More travels in the realm of the evil Uttakin are to follow.

Delpton is widely regarded as the least interesting of all the towns in the fantastical realms, where literally nothing ever happens I will say this: the Delpton cheese museum is well worth a visit. There is unfortunately only one tavern.

DELVE 34.
EPIC TREK, EPIC VOYAGE
Thursday 29th October 2020.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
Campaign year: Late spring 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 2nd level rogue; FERDINAND (Pippy) 3rd level warrior.
Locations: Hall of Heroes; Delpton; Yellowport; Isle of Druids; City of Trees; Trading Post; Blessed Springs; Scorpion Bight; Sokaran coast; Golnirean coast; Ringhorn; Castle Ravayne.
KANDI & FERDINAND left the Hall of Heroes and began the journey back to Golnir. On the way KANDI was tricked into kissing a leprechaun, and was afflicted by a curse of donkey’s ears! However, they did find a buried treasure of gems, cult artefacts of Ebron and the deeds to a ship, docked in Port Kunrir.
Commentary: Ebron is the god of the Uttakin monotheists. Port Kunrir is one of their havens, on the wild western coasts of Harkuna.
Continuing east, they met up with PATTI in the Golnirean town of Delpton. (Perhaps they convened in the only pub in town.) These three delvers then made an epic journey overland, crossing Golnir & Sokara as far as Yellowport. On the way they:
• met with a storyteller, who told them the story of the milkmaid and the troll ‘Bumbletirade’.
• helped a farmer with a broken wagon.
• spoke to a mad thatcher who deceived the local peasants for money.
• KANDI was gored by a bull and pitched over a wall into a midden.
Arriving at Yellowport, the delvers took passage by ship to the Isle of Druids. There they visited the City of Trees and handed over the willow staff to the Oak Druid (a. p. distributed). They then returned to the nearby Trading Post, where their ship Ravyane’s Fury had lain at anchor since last winter.
The delvers set sail from the Isle of Druids. Their crew caught a merman in their nets. Despite the crew’s protests, they freed the merman; his brother later came to the surface and gifted them a magic conch.
Laying at anchor (somewhat exposed in deep water off the eastern coast of Sokara), the delvers went ashore by boat. They visited the town of Blessed Springs, hoping to cure KANDI’s curse, but with no success. A storm came in from the east and almost wrecked their ship. If I remember right they blew on the merman's magic conch and diverted the gale.
The delvers then sailed south, rounding Scorpion Bight and following the coast west all the way to Ringhorn (facing several more storms on the way). Off the coasts of Sokara, they:
• Joined in a fight between the Sokaran Navy and some pirates.
• Rescued a crippled merchant ship from Ankon-Konu.
Off the coasts of Golnir, they:
• Met and charmed a mermaid.
• Met a merchant ship from Dangor, with whom they swapped cargo.
Commentary: Ankon-konu is the great southern continent, easily as big as the whole of Harkuna, covered in Fabled Lands books 7 & 8 (the latter unpublished 😞). Dangor is the City in the Clouds, part of the Forbidden Realm of the far south-east, of which we know very little (book 11, also unpublished). However, the writing of book 8 is said to be underway. Fingers crossed!
Arriving at Ringhorn the delvers sold their cargo, and travelled inland to visit Castle Ravyane and buy weapons & armour.
That was delve #34, in which the delvers walked almost all the way across the Fabled Realms from west to east, then sailed almost all of the way back again.

DELVE 35.
WEEKEND CITY BREAK
Friday 30th October 2020.
Online, ca. 9.30 pm – 12.30 am.
Campaign year: Late spring 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 2nd level rogue; FERDINAND (Pippy) 3rd level warrior.
Locations: Castle Ravayne; Ringhorn; Aku.
Travelling by road south from Castle Ravyane to the port of to Ringhorn, the delvers each bought fine clothing, visited the temples to receive blessing, and stocked their ship with cargo.
Setting sail, they journeyed west towards the city of Aku in Old Harkuna. On the way they were attacked by and fought off a pirate ship. Arriving at Aku, the delvers navigated the narrow gorge to the harbour. There, they docked and sold their cargo before taking sedan chairs up the cliff-side into the main city. At an inn, they spoke to the locals and learned much about the city.
Visiting the Cathedral of Ebron, the god of the Uttakin, KANDI and FERDINAND were directed to the Hall of Ablution, where they were ritually cleansed by a sand-bath. There, they pushed their way through to an Uttakin noblemen, who (by custom) was required to grant them any request. KANDI’s request of an audience with the Faceless King was denied on a technicality.
Returning to the Cathedral, KANDI and FERDINAND renounced their respective gods and joined the faith of Ebron (PATTI declined); KANDI also received Ebron’s blessing. Visiting the Grand Bazaar; KANDI was ripped off by a wizard who promised to cure her curse, but absconded with hundreds of gold pieces.
The delvers then set up a wrestling booth; KANDI wrestled with Esteban, a lord of the Uttakin, but let him win. As a reward for her discretion, one of the lord’s courtiers arranged for lessons in the ancient game of bokh.
The delvers then visited the Spider Palace (PATTI stayed outside). After paying to stay in the palace apartments for some time, FERDINAND defeated the Grand Vizier at bokh. As a result, he was allowed to speak to:
• the Convener of Chariots, who tasked him to find the Holy Avenger of Kizil Irmak; and.
• the Compiler of Confectionary Surprises, who tasked him to bring some Akatsuran pink rice.
The delvers then returned to Aku city.
Delve #35 was their first visit to the weird city of Aku with its strange inhabitants and stranger customs. I not sure they ever went back.

DELVE 36.
DELVERS LOST IN CURSED FOREST
Friday 6th November 2020.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
Campaign year: Early summer 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 2nd level rogue; FERDINAND (Pippy) 3rd level warrior; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior.
Locations: Wheatfields/Aku; Innis Shoals; Port Kunrir; Violet Ocean; Braelak; Dweomer; Bluewood; Dweomer (again).
BARTON, asleep in Wheatfields was visited by the Oak Druid, who offered him his thanks and blessing, transporting him by druidic magic to join his friends in Aku. In Aku, it was a festival day of Ebron – the delvers were fined for the crime of lesser heresy as they did not have the right colour scarf.
Leaving Aku, the delvers set sail; that dawn, there was snow on deck from the Icicle Woods many leagues to the north. Heading west, they passed the Innis Shoals and sailed up the west coasts of Harkuna to dock at Kunrir.
Commentary: The Innis Shoals are a series of craggy islands inhabited by religious fanatics and crazed hermits.
In Kunrir, it was a feast day of Ebron and they were again fined for the crime of lesser heresy. They redeemed the ship’s deeds for a new ship, but sold it on. Leaving Kunrir, the delvers sailed south again and re-entered the Violet Ocean. There, they were attacked by pirates, but managed to outrun them.
Sailing east, the delvers docked at Braelak Isle and visited the city of Dweomer. In the city, they browsed a magic shop, but did not purchase anything. They spotted the thief Laura in a tavern (you may remember that she had tricked them during a burglary in Yellowport). Confronting her, they were banished into the Bluewood by her companion (seemingly a wizard).
Commentary: The Bluewood is a haunted forest that covers more than half of Braelak, the Sorcerers' Isle. The city of Dweomer is where the sorcerous colleges (30 of these) are located.
In the cursed Bluewood, the delvers soon become lost and separated. PATTI and KANDI found the way out, but BARTON and FERDINAND were drained of their vital force by the horrid spirits of the wood. KANDI (bravely) and PATTI (under duress) re-entered the wood to rescue their friends. The delvers crawled back to Dweomer city.
Delve #36 was their first visit to Dweomer - many more adventures are to come on the Isle of Wizards.

I remember buying all the necessary scarves and STILL managing to be fined for lesser heresy for wearing the wrong one! If there’s a reason we never returned to Aku it’s that holy day tax nonsense…😠
I really enjoyed the sea sessions though and am a little sad that some members of our current party don’t want to return to sea. They say it’s not profitable but I think they’re scared🙃 There’s never an admin session at sea!

DELVE 37.
WIZARDS' DUEL IN COLLEGE GROUNDS
Sunday 9th November 2020.
Online, ca. 9.30 pm – 12.30 am.
Campaign year: Early summer 503.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 2nd level rogue; FERDINAND (Pippy) 2nd level warrior; BARTON (Savage) 3rd level warrior.
Locations: Dweomer.
In Dweomer city, KANDI attempted to join one of the wizard's colleges. She was tricked by a band of students, who mugged her, hoping to supplement their meagre grants. KANDI drove them off with spectacular swordplay, severing the arm of one who tried to wield a poisoned dagger.
Commentary: By this point KANDI was already a pretty lethal sword-wielder.
The delvers passed an inn where they saw Laura & her wizard-friend again. This time more political approach paid dividends. The wizard was revealed as Laura’s dad, and warden of All Hellions’ college. FERDINAND & BARTON were partially healed by his magic. KANDI & PATTI (who’d been waiting outside, afraid to go in) then barged in and tried to claim some of the magic for themselves but were banished again.
This time, they appeared in the street and met with Talanexor the Fireweaver (you may remember that they burgled his house in Yellowport). He challenged them to a magical duel & KANDI accepted. In an effort get help with the duel they visited the magic shops in search of a trinket or knick-knack that might help, but to no avail (not within their price-range, anyway).
They returned to their ship, and pondered fleeing the isle to avoid fighting the duel. Talanexor’s messenger brought word that his master would burn their sails if they did. They then tried to get help with the wizards of Fulgur college, specialists in weather magic. A member of the college offered to cast a rain spell for them if at least one of them joined the college.
PATTI passed the entry exams, by showing that she was the least holy of the delvers. PATTI was then shamed into contesting the duel on Erebus Meadow, as the only delver who knew magic. (She still tried to argue her way out of it it, and yet still hid a poisoned dagger in her sleeve.) BARTON also hid behind a nearby knoll, perhaps planning to interfere illegally with missile fire?
Commentary: The wizards of Dweomer hold the gods of Harkuna in scorn (there are no temples on the Isle at all). PATTI's lack of piety was a big help to her in the exams.
At the duel, the heavens opened (as agreed with the wizards of Fulgur). Talanexor could not use his fire magic because of the rain, and posed a mathematical problem instead. The delvers managed to work out the answer, and PATTI used the FAL spell to curse Talanexor with weightlessness, and to toss him feather-light into the storm. Talanexor yielded; the delvers were awarded cash as compensation.
Commentary: FAL is a spell what a wizard from that other game might call "Featherfall".
Later, at Fulgur college, they researched the Forest of Larun & the Bluewood in the college library. They learned that the Master of Fulgur college had the book on the Forest of Larun. PATTI managed to gain an audience with him, and survived his lethally soporific conversation to gain the password to the Tomb of the Wizard King (“REBIRTH”).
Commentary: Several students have actually been bored literally to death by a seminar with the Master of The College.
Delve #37 saw the first wizard vs. wizard combat of the campaign, which was pretty exciting. As members of Fulgur the delvers now have access to college rooms in Dweomer as a base for their exploits.
