OOC: Ah, so 1st edition doesn't have the rules for casting spell above your current level? The rules do not mention anything on the subject. I think it's logical that the spells are tied to character level.Did Poncho notice anything of interest from his view at the top of the tower? Nothing much. The view is better as the weather is clearer. The flooding of the north side of the valley seems to be receding. Pelgrane circle the mountain tops to the south, making the top of the tower a dangerous place to be, should they decide to swoop down. Yes.None. I thought you divided them already.

OOC: Is there any writing material that Drugan could use to copy down some of the spells?

OOC: Is there any writing material that Drugan could use to copy down some of the spells? Yes, there are quills, inks and papers in the desk on the second floor. Those who want can copy two spells per day.

OOC: Well if we take a day more between the three of us wizards we can copy all the spells.
Which might come in handy if we find the towers wizard alive and he doesn't want us taking his spell book.
If we go with this plan I'll copy "The Mercurial Canter of Le'mal" and "The Rejuvinating Touch of the Swan".

Quinlan: "Studying books, copy another wizard's work (without offering to teach ME anything)? We're not bookworms or scriveners; we are delvers, freebooters and adventurers. I say we rest one night to recuperate the majority of our number then storm the fish-fiends and put paid to their pilchardy activity once and for all!"

Varklud: What Heggcraft would you learn Quinlan? The Venomous Feathers of Burkusk? Derrey-o's Hat Magic? If we've time, I'll teach any spell you'd like that is known to me - in candor, though, I admit I don't remember the rites of those aforementioned at the moment... you might profit from the vorpal blade, yes?

OOC: Can warriors learn spells in 1st edition? I did notice that the players handbook had no rogue class. Is this something we have discussed already?
OOC: As far as the coins from upstairs, I noticed that a few players did not take any coins so there should still be some gold, silver, and especially copper coins. Of course we could leave them all in one semi-secure place while we venture below.
"Alright, one more day of rest," Charles says grudgingly. "But after that it's back to bashing heads. I'd like to find more than a wizard's loose change, tridents, cursed necklaces, and slimy cups. Surely the gill men have a treasure vault down there filled with jewels and gold bars."
Charles gets a far off look in his eyes and sighs contentedly.
"Warriors casting spells eh? I think I'll pass for now. I need to save my strength for throwing spears and slicing up fishmen."
Charles settles down into a corner of the room with a cup of wine and starts counting the coins in his pack.

Quinlan: "Hmmm Hat Magic... Actually, I benefit from you casting Vorpal Blade for me Varklud! Although spells are handy, my talents are needed on the front line, I don't much like the idea of casting a spell and losing my edge in battle... But the offer is greatly appreciated."

OOC: I suggest we once again rotate two hour watches while we sleep.
If nothing untowards happens Drugan will copy out "The Mercurial Canter of Le'mal" and "The Rejuvinating Touch of the Swan".
Then he will look around for a bottle or other container he can make water tight with a cork or wax seal, so he doesn't need to worry about the newly written pages getting wet.
Of course he will take the time to feed and water the birds again.
I would suggest our other esteemed mages copy out the other spells, that way we can share them between ourselves when we hit 2nd level.

You pass another quiet day and night in the tower. Some of the birds perk up after Drugan's treatments. Nothing has been heard from below. (Drugan +1 CON.)OOC: Can warriors learn spells in 1st edition? I did notice that the players handbook had no rogue class. Is this something we have discussed already? Yes, I explained it before the beginning of the game here and here. The only way a warrior can learn a spell is from a magic-user using The Diligent Recitation (Teacher) spell. Warriors must of course meet the IQ and DEX requirements for the spell. Warriors do not get a ST discount for casting spells of a lower level and they cannot use magical staffs.
It's not explained very clearly in the PHB, I'll remedy that in the future.Do as you please. The floor or the broken chest are not very secure places to store the coins.

Poncho's eyes glaze over at all the talk of reading and spellcraft. He'll spend the time deciding which of the birds might make for a good roasting. There are lots of copper coins lying around, game of tiddlywinks anyone?
OOC: Charles is right that the pile of coins was split six ways, Drugan and Varklud are due shares of 10gp, 86sp, and 190cp. Sorry Melanthios, this was divided before we met, but you're welcome to my coppers. We should probably make a note of our treasure. In other valuables I think we now have 3 (or is it more?) gold necklaces, and a couple of pearls.

OOC: I think we've picked up more than three necklaces, Drugan has picked up two himself in the tower.
Also Melanthios is the only warrior with the right stats to pick up some basic spell casting, but I would be happy to teach him a spell or two. ;D
Drugan will set his new equipment in his pack and shove his new cudgel/makeshift staff through his belt.
"Charles as it looks as if I'm going to be stuck in the middle of the party keep my shield you'll get more use out of it"
"Besides it cursed heavy and I don't want to leave my rope in case we need it"
"Now what is the plan, do we go back to the tunnels or attempt to solve the locked door mystery again?"

Melanthios: "Do we have at least seven necklaces (one for each of us)? If not I think we should continue exploring the tunnels."

"Well, I picked one off Burt when we captured him and we got another off a body during the first encounter I think"
"I've picked up two in our recent encounters and I'm not sure how many were taken when i was "Dazed""
OOC: We should have at least four by my count right?
How many did you guys pick up while I was offline?

Verklud: I will seal the trapdoor again with the Seal of Cthon, cast through my ring - which is then exhausted. I will spend time this day maintaing vigilant watch, with an ever ready Seal of Cthon, and when the watch can be otherwise maintained, I will attempt to create a new makeshift staff out of a hammer or mallet (drawn from tools on first floor). "Drugan - I trust your hand at scribing and fear I'd mangle the runes."
(ooc: A Ha! Drugan has the mecklace I thought I had - so I have none. And thanks for the heads up on my treasure share - I was a little dazed for a while there myself and missed that.)
SR roll for makeshift staff: 2d6 1 + 2 = 3 (FAILED! ARGH!) Hey - wait a minute! I just went through the PHB to find out what happens when that save fails, and there is no mention of the saving roll to enchant the staff in the book! Not trying to be a rules lawyer - but did I just assume this part of 5th edition was valid?
