I've managed to get a few people interested in some at-table gaming, and they seem initially into Swords & Wizardry, which I'm sure will be cast through a Holmes Basic lens to some extent at first.
It is entirely possible that it will mutate into T&T or something else at some point.
So the starting point is on a large, isolated island with six 'kingdoms' separated by wilderness - this wilderness (of course) dotted with ancient ruins, bandits and other baddies, and such. I am hoping that I can talk some of you online persons to run NPCs in this environment (this has been refered to as Evil Overlord somewhere on the webnet - I have lost the bookmark - it's a good read though). The gist is that these online characters are higher-level characters instead of NPCs run by the GM - so the 'background' (of the tabletop game) is formed by agencies other than just the DM's addled pate.
If you're interested, email me at lexos.gdb@gmail.com. Your character and the disposition of your resources will be randomly generated. And thank you!

(this has been refered to as Evil Overlord somewhere on the webnet - I have lost the bookmark - it's a good read though Interesting idea. The GM in my L5R game offered a similar idea for an NPC hacker for his Shadowrun game. I couldn't do it then as the mechanism, realtime IM's/Txts, wasn't a viable option for me then. Would this be the link you were looking for?

I should note also that the Evil part of Evil Overlord in the original post is tongue-in-cheek. There's no kind of evil requirement to play - but there's no prohibition either.... heh heh heh

Hi, This is an idea I have never even heard of before! After reading the links, wow, that sounds cool (if you can find people that will do it). I can see how that would make the campaign world seem even more alive than ever before. Some people certainly know how to think outside the box heheh.

*raises from behind a bush...shifts eyes left and right...sniffs the air* Wazzat? Holmes? Holmes Basic by way of S&W? Sounds keen. How are you thinking of giving the Holmes feel?
Otherwise, the "Overlord" idea sounds really intriguing, if not potentially difficult to manage.

Otherwise, the "Overlord" idea sounds really intriguing, if not potentially difficult to manage. The Holmes side of it is probably moreso in the table-top game (got 3 responses for this). I think all of my low-level games are kinda Holmes-inflected. I'm gonna have Quasqueton as a sight nearby where the players start, and the general area has been populated using the monster and treasure selection from the blue book. Did someone say "potentially difficult to manage"? I think so, yes...Speaking of which (!) I have to close the open call for overlords. I suspect that the office may reopen aperiodically. I've provisionally got six! AND, they are inventing 'rulers' and 'realms' for themselves instead of taking one from my list of NPCs - so they are mutating the setting I had in mind and making some serendipitous choices...this is gonna be cool!

It does sound cool. I may have to steal some (Holmsian) ideas there. Just the grit and the monsters from Holmes...for S&W. That easy. It's jus' crazy enough to work. (Peeks out from around tree-trunk, hankie over mouth) Did someone say 'Holmes-infested' - or 'Holmes- infected'? EEEEEK! ;D Oh. You're just Holmes-ophobic. Welcome back, by the way.

I'm gonna have Quasqueton as a sight nearby where the players start... Quasqueton, Iowa?? I can see it now.... You find yourself on the corner of an intersection. A lantern suspended above the crossroads slowly shifts colors from green to orange and finally red. The night is eerily quiet with the red light reflecting off the line of orange gnome hats in the center of the road. Part of the road appears torn up, as if from great claws, and a dark circular hole yawns open it's shield cover forgotten to the side. A horseless carriage quickly rumbles by. Baleful red lights follow it down the road sending a shiver up your spine. "Lads, I dinna thin' we be in Caer Leon a'more."
