<OoC> How deep is the pool? Can we climb down safely ( and back out again)? Are there any markings on the monolith?
Quinlan: "I favour returning to the pool passages after exploring the rest of the underground..."

Drugan looks out at the menacing structure in the pool, then at the underwater passages, then back at Quinlan. "I'm for that!"

Alwyn will cast 'Detect Magic' on the monolith.

Melanthios: "I agree about leaving the pool for now. Let's start by trying the south door and if that's just a tunnel leading back to the statue room we move on to the north door."

Drugan remembering being dragged into the water by the tentacle beast shudders then nods sagely.
"Melanthios has an excellent idea, southward for riches and hopefully a complete lack of tentacles!"

The monolith is smooth and foreboding. Alwyn senses strange and unknown magics about the stone.
The borders of the pool are almost level with the floor of the hall, so getting in and out of it should not be difficult. Diving down the passages will however require strong lungs and some skill.
Melanthios suspicion about the south door is correct and so you head over to the north door. It reveals a small 10' by 10' antechamber with grim depictions of gill-man skulls carved into the walls. A metal door with similar ornaments leads northward.

"Well isn't this a welcoming little chamber" "Perhaps whoever has the meteoric sword can try the door, it could be what it takes to finally breach these portals" "While we try that I'll be sure to keep an eye on the pool with my firebomb at the ready in case our gilled friends make an unexpected visit" OOC: Whatever we are going to do lets not hang around here to long, this room gives off major bad mojo vibes.

OOC: In case it was unclear, the south door in the large hall leads to corridor going straight for the statue room. The north door in the large hall leads to the bad-vibe antechamber that contains another door going further north (you do not yet know if it is locked).

OOC: Lets go see if the unexplored door is locked, it seems like the best bet at this point.

Before anyone can touch the door Charles enters the small antechamber and inspects the grimly adorned walls for any signs of traps or latches. In particular he is looking for needles, arrows, or other pointy objects inside the eye sockets, mouths or other openings in the gill man skulls.
"I don't feel like being a pin cushion," he mutters to himself as he searches.

"Well isn't this a welcoming little chamber" "Perhaps whoever has the meteoric sword can try the door, it could be what it takes to finally breach these portals" "Oye! Who has that? Perhaps the key to these doors is some combination of the artefacts we now possess - I've the kingfish's crown, there's the necklaces, the 'eyes' of the statue - and a blade that breaks magic! It's a thought..."

Melanthios tries listening for any sounds from behind the door with the grim ornaments.
Melanthios: "I'd rather try out these doors here that we haven't explored yet than backtrack all the way back to the statue room to try out something that might or might not work."

Charles deems the chamber safe enough and Melanthios does not hear anything from behind the door, so he opens it.
The room beyond is cold and it might be as large as the hall behind you, at least your lanterns and torches are not able to light it fully. The ceiling is lower, only 12' and you see two large stone sarcophagi on both sides of the door some 20' into the room. They are adorned with skulls, waves and esoteric symbols and have heavy stone lids.

Melanthios: "This must be where the gillmen bury their dead. That explains the skull symbols on the door. Before we do anything else I think we should check out how large this room is, if there are any other doors or passages and also how many sarcophagi there are in this room taking special note of any especially interesting looking ones if any."
"I wonder if there are any traps or magic enchantments placed on these sarcophagi to deter would-be graverobbers?"

"Grave robbers? That would be me!"
Charles eyes the sarcophagi greedily but suspiciously.
"Yes, let's get those torches spread out and see how many coffins there are. They could be stuffed with gill man gold. Either that or gill zombies."
Charles shudders for a moment at the thought of the possible stench of rotting gill men. He quickly expels these thoughts and moves toward the center of the room.
OOC: Who has torches/lanterns lit?
