OOC: Is it possible to get a spell off at the tentacle beast, hopefully getting it to release our comrade? OOC: Yes, but he'll still be stuck under the lid.

Drugan unleashes a "The Penetrating Laceration of Koth" spell through his makeshift staff/cudgel at the tentacle beast.
"Quickly shift the lid or he will be crushed!"
"Sorcerous brothers lend your aid, unleash your power on the grasping fiend!"

Poncho grabs at the lid and tries to shift it off his trapped companion.
"Quick someone help me with this, pull him back out!"

Charles throws his own weight into lifting the lid off of their trapped comrade.
"Just be ready to blast any tentacles that leap out at us!"

Quinlan grabs hold of those feet and tugs with all his might... Can someone do a ST saving throw for me?

The creature roars as the spells dig into it and relinquishes its grip on Melanthios. Your combined efforts are barely enough to lift the lid and yank the almost unconscious warrior out. You can hear the monster sloshing around inside the sarcophagus, but the lid is much too heavy for it to move. OOC: Remember to write up your EP for the spells and SR's. Mel earns 55 points for almost being crushed to death.

OOC: Now the real question is do each of the sarcophagi contain a tentacle beast or did we just choose poorly?.
Would it be possible to drill a hole in the lid or side of a sarcophagus with our drill?
Maybe if we drained one and left the beast would dry out and die?
Or are they all connected to an underground water source.
We could try banging on the lids and seeing if we get a reaction.
If we had some poison we could drill a hole in the lids and then wait for the beast inside to die.
Can anyone think of something we've come across we could use for that?
Whatever else we do, we should probably finish up in the room and then get our wounded warrior some much needed medical attention.

Quinlan:
"Do we have any way of healing poor Melanthios?
Drugan I feel we were unlucky with that first casket.
In the days before the Wildlands I may have considered a drill but today I want a mallet! I say we stove in the lids of these coffins and defile any evil rementants left within - looting all we find! A curse upon these tentacled fiends!"

"The tower's wizard will doubtless heal our poor friend should we carry him back"
"Though it might take a day or so for him to come back to full strength, seeing as the Wizard will need to heal him several times"
"Wait but a few more minutes until I regain some of my expended strength, then we can use a rope connected to my crowbar to lift a coffin lid from a safe distance"
"We'll hook the crowbar to the edge of the coffin with a strong rope connected to it then we can pull on the rope"
"If another of these tentacle beasts reaches out we wizards will blast it with arcane power, while the warriors form a shield wall"
"It will be dead before it can ever reach us"

You rest for a half hour (3 points of ST regained) and then get back to work. Following Drugan's plan, you anchor the crowbar to the lid of a nearby sarcophagus and pull the rope to lift it. With Melanthios out of the picture, Alwyn has to step to and again there is rush of air as the pressure seal is broken. The lid falls to the floor and breaks with a loud crack.
The smell is not nearly as bad with this one and nothing jumps out. As the dust settles you cautiously move in for a closer look.
Floating in the sarcophagus is the preserved body of a strong gill-man. Its eyes are closed and the arms are crossed over its chest, with the hands placed on the opposite elbows. Something is stuck under the arms and it glimmers like gold in the torchlight.

"Charles, Quinlan, decapitate this foul thing before we investigate any further"
"It may be playing possum"
Drugan stands ready with cudgel/staff and trident in case it rises from it's unhallowed rest.
