So as I mention elsewhere I've been working on making PDF's out of my collection. I also decided for better or worse to send some of this to Rick at Flying Buffalo in hopes that it would make it's way up to Drivethrurpg. The "Big Surprise" was SA 1-17 fully OCR'd [see screen shot] and sent these to FBI on a CD both because of file sizes and security. I have yet to hear back from Rick I suspect that it might be awhile after some of the other things I have read in the older threads about how things are. But if these things never see the light of day then at least I tried to preserve them. I'm going to fill another CD with at least 5th Edition [3rd Printing] - done Dungeon of the Bear [1 -3] - done Catacombs of the Bear Cult - done Laybrinth [1st] - done Overkill [2nd edition] Beyond the Silver Pane Arena of Khazan If all that made it into Driverthrurpg it would be a good showing for FBI's digital library especially before the holiday shopping season . I any case I figured it could not hurt to post what I'd been up to. The SA scanning and cleaning took a full 10days where I had to remove the staples and do each page in my 10 year old scanner. [Just to make even more fun OSX doesn't support my scanner so I scan in a virtual machine running Centos 5]. I'm glad I did it. If anyone knows anyone with any pull with Rick may I suggest begging . -Mike PS - I'd post the TIFF of the screen shot if anyone want's it it's about 800k but looks better then this jpg that compressed to be nice. I hate to pour cold water on your ideas, but to republish the SA in PDF format requires additional approval from the authors. FBI has lost contact with most of the original content creators. Some of which are "out of sorts" with FBI. FBI has sold/given the rights to republish it's T&T resources to other 3rd parties.
I'd say you've got 2 options, cease and desist or let it go into the wild.

I wondered about that and still wonder.... IANAL and in my letter to Rick I made that very clear, if it is not possible then it's not possible but I tried. As far as letting them out, not from me I would not feel right about that. I was hoping that PDF of the same format falls under some "republish" case law. Since they did SA 1 at "that company" some lawyer must have looked into it at some point. [Then again maybe not as some of older posts here suggest Outlaw was less then careful about somethings.] Well it is what it is. -Mike [Time to get my son suited up for candy begging ]

I'm curious about the business of gaining approval from the original contributors... A letter to their last known address along the lines of 'let me know by 24 December if you have any objections to a reprint' seems to cover the situation nicely.
Publishers do it all the time...
I did some art for a British sci-fi literary magazine back in the 80s - they had some major authors writing under pseudonyms contributing some brilliant work. 10 years later, the Editors re-printed the material in an 'omnibus' and sent out letters of enquiry a few weeks before publication date.
I often wonder if Rick's lack of activity is only due to a chronic case of 'can't be bothered...'

Gah! Mgtremaine has actually done my dream T&T product. As I have mentioned in many threads before, I think a SA collection would be a perfect T&T idea. It is just such a shame to see all those great articles out of the reach of the next generation of T&T players. I have a number of SA's myself and can attest to the superior quality of the magazine. Here's hoping you get a chance to have it released and a big exalt from me for fighting that good fight, I salute you sir! ;D

Aww, man. I wish that those PDFs were a possibility. I want legit nice quality SA issues and a nice collection to buy would be awesome, instead of here finding them here and there on ebay or wherever. I'll keep dreaming

I hoping to finish the next Disc tomorrow and send it by Monday. I've added a few things including Caravan to Tiern, scanning right now, because the FBI site says a PDF is coming soon. (But as far as I can tell from the wayback machine it has said that for well over a year and a half.) I do have one small problem in that I have Uncle Ugly's Underground Doom [UK version so it's small and blue ] but it is missing page 3. Which is sad, I got it directly from Rick back in the 90's but guess I never cared enough to mention it to him. Sooo... if anyone has page 3 perhaps you can PM me about it. -Mike

WOOOOOWWW!! check out what updated at driverthrurpg rpg.drivethrustuff.com/index.php?cPath=311Now we are getting somewhere!!!! [And I can stop scanning Caravan to Tiern] So in the last 2 days Rick has added 4 new PDF's Complete Dungeon of the Bear Caravan to Tiern [miss title as of ] The Adventures of the Jade Jaguar Labyrinth I already bought Complete DOB and Caravan just to check them out. Quality is good, not perfect but I'm sort OCD about it, way better then the Weirdworld that was up. -Mike

I would expect Caravan to be a nicer quality. Rick still has those in stock and if you buy any copies they'll look like mint. As for Labyrinth, that's cool it's finally up. That one, take what you can get I guess since that color cover copy is on the rarer side and it's an older solo. All in all, this is good news as any update is good

Caravan is out of print. The only of the later modules that is sold out. So issuing the PDF should be a good thing. But yeah overall this is great news it means he has not just giving up on releasing as PDF.

Oh, I stand corrected. I haven't checked the FBI site in a while. I've actually bought an extra copy of Caravan off of Paizo.com though. They still have it in stock ($8).

I'll take this as a very good sign. Very good, indeed. ;D
Though I admit I won't quite comfortably exhale until 5th or at least 5.5 is out there.
