After some internal debate the merchants are more than willing to relate their problems to Drugan and Varklud. For some weeks now they have been awaiting the arrival of an associate from distant Marundah.
Prax the Clothier is carrying a precious cargo of silks. Other merchants passing through the Inn have mentioned sighting him entering the Forest of Woe, which suggests that some ill fate might have befallen his caravan in the woods. Members of the Black Brigade, a notorious group of mercenary bandits, have been sighted in the area and there have been reports of other travelers mysteriously disappearing.
The merchants are willing to offer you a reward of one thousand gold coins if you can recover the cargo for them.
[Sorry for the long pause in the game. I've been under the weather.]

Drugan scratches his chin.
"What can you tell us about the Forest of Woe and the Black Brigade, any information you have might be of vital importance"
"Also how large is this shipment, could it be transported on a few mules or horses or is it several wagon loads of cloth and material"
"If we did undertake this commission and recover the purloined silk where would we deliver it to for payment?"
OOC: It wasn't in the wild_lands_phb.pdf but is spider venom or paralytic poison available in the Wild Lands? I was going to purchase a blowpipe and darts, but before I did I wanted to see if appropriate venom for the darts was for sale first.

The premier of the merchants, a sleek man called Achilleus, explains that they know little of the Forest or the Black Brigade, none of them having ever traveled further than the Inn.
The caravan consists of two fast carriages and five guards, two of which are mounted outriders. The bolts of silk can be brought to the Inn, since the merchants will be staying here for at least a couple of weeks. The reward will be paid on delivery.
[Spider venom is not mentioned in the 1st ed. rules, but Drugan can purchase some for the same price as snake venom. He will however have to roll and see if any is available and the same goes for the blowgun.
The effects of spider venom are: half MR the first round after the hit, total paralyzation from the second round, target recovers on the fifth.]

Charles shakes off the effects of last nights indulgences and sets about finding some new equipment.
Making his way among the merchants he finds that his luck has much improved and manages to find a nice suit of scale armor, a selfbow and 20 arrows, and a sharp new broadsword. He also picks up 2 days of canned provisions, 3 days of standard rations, some calf high boots to replace his worn sandals, and a magnetic compass.
He rejoins his comrades feeling like the man he was before being shipped off to this horrid land.
Overhearing the conversation between the wizards and the merchants, Charles' ears perk up when he hears the words 'one thousand gold coins' and he hurries over.
"Charles Abbey at your service. This Forest of Woe sounds like a dismal place. Is this the route your friend usually takes?"
OOC: Added 4 points to Luck for going to Level 2. Spent 250 gp on weapons, armor, and supplies.

OOC: Huzzah the spider venom is mine! 6+6 doubles and 3+6 + Drugans Luck of 9=30! Drugan will buy two containers for 50gp Now for a blowgun to use it with! 3+2+ Drugans Luck of 9=14 OK, I'm gonna need a different delivery system. Lets try for a light crossbow 3+6+Drugans Luck of 9=18 Ok lets try for a prod! 4+5+Drugans Luck of 9=18 he can't use a regular bow with a crutch so my next choice is a Dokyu maybe he'll get lucky. 3+6+Drugans Luck of 9=18 I'm beginning to sense a pattern. ;D OK anything heftier in the crossbow department will be useless once he's cast a few spells and lugging around javelins and an atl-atl would be awkward with a crutch so hmm no chakram for Drugan. Daggers nice safe no need for a SR daggers! 2 Dirks for 16 GP And Drugan will gets some leather straps to construct a sheath attached to his left crutch bearing arm so he can stump along with his wand held securely to his arm. 1 gp 5 silver? While we're out in the Forest of Woe Drugan will have to keep his eyes peeled for a nice bit of wood to make a blowpipe with!

Achilleus explains to Charles: "The road eastward from the Inn goes through the forest. It is the only way to Marundah. The forest is dangerous, but as long as you keep to the road it should not prove too perilous. Prax the Clothier has made the journey countless times."

Drugan shifts his pack and checks the load on Gertrude.
"Lets be off, if those rogues ruin the silk we're out of commission"

OOC: Has Drugan taught the spells to Melanthios already?
Upon hearing that the party has gotten a new errand (to teach some petty bandits a lesson) Melanthios will go out and buy some food (4 days) and provisions (2 days). After this he has only 3 gp and 1 sp left and is ready to leave when the rest of the party is.

Charles continues his questions to the merchants.
"How far is it to this Forest of Woe from here and how long is the road through the forest? We should pack enough food and supplies to at least get us there; although I plan on getting enough to come back as well."
After the merchants have answered his questions Charles motions to Drugan.
"It would seem that all of my new finery will prevent me from carrying your tower shield. I thank you for it's use, it served me well. You seem a bit stronger so you may be able to handle it. Let me know if it becomes too much of a burden. Say, how much weight do you think that mule can carry?"
