Machfront, you must have been paid by the word.
Seriously, it's a great tale and not that different from mine in many ways. I was given a copy of the 5E rulebook about 20 years ago (the tan one similar to our board logo) and hardly looked at it, being an OD&D guy and having heard that T&T was a D&D-ripoff game but when I looked at it I couldn't find anything immediately useful for my OD&D game. Basically it sat on the shelf, where occasionally I would pull it out, thumb through it, and shake my head. Still not OD&D.
One of our used bookstores had a whole stack of solo T&T adventures that just sat there for years and I passed on them over and over. (I kick myself now.)
Then one day I decided to read it. I mean really READ through the book and figure out what the heck Ken was trying to say.
Then it clicked.
T&T wasn't a D&D-ripoff game. Sure, it might have been inspired by OD&D, but the game branched off in a totally new direction. It used handfuls of dice and was so simple, once I got past the "it's not D&D" hurdle.
Naturally I ran back to that used bookstore, only to find that the modules that had sat for years had been sold sometime when I wasn't paying attention. So I hit e-bay and built up a library of stuff. Now I have boxes of it, inclluding a nearly complete set of Sorcerer's Apprentice magazines, a bunch of Hobbit Hole magazines, and so on. I hunted down various editions of the text to look them over, but always found that my original 5E rulebook was my favorite.
I joined the Trollhalla, but disliked the format where posts could vanish quickly and be hard to find later. I pleaded with Ken to consider a T&T forum, only to find that someone had tried it years ago and it had failed. That's when I decided to start the Trollbridge, and I'm glad to be able to make an impact in the hobby for a game I enjoy so much.
I was so excited when 7E came out, but not so excited when I actually read it. Not that 7E isn't a great game, but it changed things too much from the 5E version that I had grown to adore.
I don't play T&T much at the moment. Heck, I don't get to play much at all since my kids are so busy and I'm trying to be an attentive dad. I've also been busy with playtests and writing of other game systems, so T&T has been "back burner" for a while. That's part of why I don't think to check in here as much as I ought.
Anyway, that's my story, too!
