I don't know nuthin' 'bout art but I knows whut I like.
That is the best resume for an art critic (including stories) there is. So machfront can have final say over the fiction that goes in the 'zine. If he thinks it enhances the publication it is in, if not...No fiction for you!
If we are willing to break format we can do stuff like that. If it is awsome then the whole issue gets to be fiction. We can call it 'Machfronts summer reader issue'.

Ok! Ok! If you guys happily want fiction you guys be happy with the fiction! I can take a lil minor annoyance for the rest of the crew to be content. I'll certainly not be subjected to reading it just to find out if it's bad or not. That would be my own, personal hell.

Doomed forever to read things that do not interest you... sounds like the 'professional student'!
I'll admit that I'm rarely much moved by fiction in gaming mags, but I'd say there's room for it - a lot of other folks do like it. Plus, if Neil Gaiman or (insert current big-time author you like) wanted to put something in, what fool would say no? Not this one!

What kinds of features, columns, content, etc Ok, folks, I have an idea that I've been kicking around for a few days. How about a Trollbridge contest, open to all who wish to enter, where we submit new creatures based on a monthly theme? We then have an open vote to determine the winner. The winner of each contest gets their entry added to the 'zine and gets to choose the next months theme. So, opinions?

Good idea, but won't that make it a bit of a clique, I know it's a Trollbridge zine but hopefully the readership will go beyond that. I think you're onto something with the theme for critters, but not sure about a Trollbridge vote. Perhaps just anounce a theme for each issue's critters and have open submissions?
Something that occured to me was that between us we must own all the FBI Solo's it would be cool to run a full set of reviews in chronologicall order. Two or three an issue perhaps (if we're going quarterly) They don't have to me that indepth, just a one page overview would do.
If you are going to run fiction I'd like to volunteer to handle that.

Perhaps just anounce a theme for each issue's critters and have open submissions? I see no reason why not. Realistically, we have to draw from somewhere and it may as well be here. Leave it up to readers alone and the issue may get pretty thin on content. Add a statement to each creature article explaining how creature submissions are added to the 'zine and invite readers to create a free account here and submit their critters.

Realistically, we have to draw from somewhere and it may as well be here. I understand that, I just think if your getting all the subs from members here and members are also voting on what goes in, it seems a bit closed, a bit cliqueish. Why not just have open subs and let the editor (looks at Ragnorak) choose. Either way it doesn't matter as long as we keep up some momentum here and get something out as a viable alternative to OP.

I think the monster theme is a terrific idea - along with the chronological solo review too! (the only ones I have left are Weirdworld and Beyond the Silvered Pane...) As far as the clique-ish-ness of the monster idea, I don't see a way around that right now - but it certainly doesn't have to be an enforced (read: elitist) style thing - anyone can make an account here, sure, but if someone didn't want to but did want to contribute, there would (ideally) be some way for that to happen

I hate fiction in gaming context, but I'm apparently in a minority.

I think quite a few of us here have all or most of the FBI solos, so reviews would definitely be doable. A few per zine isn't bad, and unlike what some may think of fiction, reviews of even such old solos and even GM adventures would be a huge boon. Some people still post on here from time to time looking for opinions on particular solos or GM adventures they may want to buy. So the reviews would be great. Could also review some of Boozers or other folks. Maybe one FBI product review and one indie product review

I may have missed the post in the middle of this mighty thread... but have we done anything yet?
If not, how about this.
1) I vote Mach for editor (for issue one, who knows maybe there will be an issue 2). 2) Everyone sends their electronic submissions to Mach who compiles 60 pages of double-line text. Mach puts the whole lot into an archive (Google Docs maybe) where we can all access the material). For issue one, Mach chooses what goes in and what doesn't. No discussions entered into. 3) Anyone with an artistic bent (I'm looking at you Quog) also cooks up some hot pix and sends to Mach. 4) Mach notifies me of the chosen pieces and I edit for consistency, spelling and grammar. 5) In the meanwhile, some poor schmuck puts up his (or her) paw for layout duties (I can layout but not until I get my Mac back in June). 6) Complied 'zine goes on Lulu. 7) Group hug.

As soon as Machfront accepts the nomination as editor I'll get working on an article on handling combat stunts. I could also do one on playing T&T solos with 4e D&D - might be a way of attracting converts
