After an uneventful night you set your sights on the ruins. You find your prisoners hard at work, digging an escape tunnel in the wall of the root cellar. You correct them and march them off with you.
A few hours later you stand eyeing the ruins in the drizzling rain. The thirty or so massive buildings are remarkably square in appearance, surrounded by a largely destroyed wall. No life can be observed in the bleak remains.
Your prisoners are sullen and visibly uneasy. When quizzed, they repeat some of the rumors you are already privy too. None of them have been this close to the ruins before.
There are several points of entry visible to you. What appears to have been the main gate is perhaps the most accessible. You can also make out what appears to be a sizable sewage pipe opening up into a nearby swamp. And of course you could just climb over one the low points in the wall.
[Sorry for the long pause in the game. I have no more better excuse than that of being overwhelmed by work. If there was something you wanted to acquire before setting off, just make the necessary rolls and announce your results.]

Quinlan: "Charles, what say you and I climb the wall at a low point and see what lies beyond then the others may enter by the main gate if all seems well? Perhaps withour prisoners on point duty"

Quinlan uses his mightily thewed frame to scale the wall (at a low point)... 2d6 +15 6 + 2 + 15 = 23 Good enough for a first level roll?

Drugan takes up position behind the captives.
"Now just in case any of you were thinking of taking your chances at running I'll be right back here with my staff and I swear the first one who runs will die BURNING!"
Drugan then turn to his companions.
"All present and in good order, lets see if the beasties are hungry" ;D

The higher ground by the wall affords Quinlan a better view of the ruins. Overgrown rubble fills the landscape and most of the structures still standing are but crumbling husks. In the middle of a deserted plaza a lone statue still stands and beyond it lies a similarly better preserved rectangular citadel.
Seeing Quinlan wave in the distance, Drugan prods the prisoners forward and marches them up the old paved road and inside the city wall. Regrouping by a decaying tower near the ruined gate, you plot your next move.

Quinlan eyes the broken landscape...
<OoC> do any of the structures look to be in better condition than others? Does it look as though any of the buildings are 'maintained'? Also, the sewer pipe we saw on the outside of the wall, where does that that terminate inside? (Don't want any nasties springing up from below...)

The only better preserved structure is the citadel beyond the plaza. This is not to say that the citadel looks maintained, just that it looks like it will stay standing for some time still.
Where the sewer goes is anyones guess. If the pipe is laid in a straight line it would probably go under the plaza.

Drugan motions to Quinlan and confides to him in whispered tones.
"I don't think even I can force them to go into the sewers alone, at least not without killing one of them to prove I'm serious"
He points to the citadel.
"However we may be able to make them explore that ahead of us or at least to open the doors and lead the way"

Quinlan: "Good plan Drugan... You've instilled a healthy dose of courage in those men! Let's progress to the citadel..."

Is there any evidence of animal life? No, none at all, the place is completely deserted. But as you approach the plaza on your way towards the citadel, Alwyn notices a multitude of animal bones strewn among the rubble. Most are from birds and small rodents, none seem to be human.

Charles levels his trusty trident at the prisoners.
"Forward to glory, men. If you do as you are told you will have your freedom."
Looking at the outlying buildings, Charles pauses.
"Perhaps we should investigate these structures on the way to the citadel just to be sure we are not leaving enemies behind us. There is also that statue. Hmmm."
Charles move toward the statue to get a better look.
