Yet more updates here: hogscape.googlepages.com/RetroRole-playingRealms.pdfThis time I'm calling it R3 (Retro Role-playing Realms). It's had a clean sweep for errors and an injection of public domain artwork of a medieval nature. I've added text here and there (including 'task' based Saving Rolls where levels of success are accumulated to complete larger tasks), fixed odd references to rules that have changed or evolved over a 12-month play test. I'm almost ready to declare it 'finished'... ;D Cheers

I'm very conflicted.
I think it's awesome (obviously, as I've always dug Dark Isles from day 1).
But, I'm also saddened by the loss of the DI branding. DI had...flavor, man, and that's important. Not that this doesn't. It's just... I dunno. Plus, Dark Isles is a cool name and, imo, Retro Role-playing Realms is a lil, well, boring. Sorry. I feel like a royal jerk for saying it, but it's the way I feel.
Be consoled by the facts that it's still super-cool and that I still wish I was you. -lol- ;D

Mach, the only reference to the Dark Isles setting in the rules was 'Designed for use with the Dark Isles' and that's been absent for quite a while. Dark Isles is a stand alone book (albeit specifically for this ruleset) - until now, the rules have simply been called 'Tunnels & Trolls'...
No jerkiness on your part - many of your encouraging comments promoted me to go as far with the game as I have!

'K, I just looked over the older stuff in my DI folder and you're absolutely right. I guess it was just that the rules and the campaign book were tied so closely together in my mind that made my brain, well, pretty much make that up. My bad. No jerkiness on your part - many of your encouraging comments promoted me to go as far with the game as I have! I'm so glad you have. Now, all it needs is some original, old-school art to make it sing.

This is some really nice work. Just glancing through it, I see a lot of stuff in here I could picture myself using. It looks like you've limited attribute improvement to the key attribute for that type. While it would generally seem more likely for wizards to work on intelligence, warriors to work on strength, etc., I'm not sure I agree with enforcing it in the rules. Did something come up in play that steered you in this direction?

Hi Peryton,
Every time a character gains a level the player may allocate 2 points to any attribute they wish. Every other level, the character also gains a bonus point which MUST be spent on a key attribute. I suppose it started out as a way to ensure that warriors were generally better fighters, wizards better spell casters and rogues luckier than their fellows.
If the player wanted to, all 3 points could be added to the same key attribute. Most of my players diversify a tad though.
Thanks for your interest.

I missed the part about the two points with every level gain, so I thought that the key bonus was the only increase ever. That's what I get for trying to take in the whole book between tasks at work! Makes perfect sense, now. Cool.

I just read your 4th ed. rule set. Very awesome. If only I'd read this before I jumped in with 5th ed. I might retro-fit some of it in. thanks.

Glad you liked. More developments coming soon. Do any of those developments include new art, digest formatting, or a hardcover edition on lulu? ;D
