Mongoose has quality control issues... like not listening to playtesters, bemoaning playtester comments, and basically being pig headed. If MRQ II is better, it's in SPITE of their leadership, not because of them.
The general tone is that MRQ II is broken less than MRQ I, but I've not got II... tho if you want to buy me the PDF I'll run it by skype for you...

One of my old gaming mates bought RQ3 when it came out. We gave it a little go but weren't keen. I haven't seen either of the Mongoose editions so I can't comment on them. Can't say I'm particularly interested either. I like RQ2 and if I can play it PBP that's fine, but I can't really be bothered to spend the money or time on getting into a new game.
We played a bit of MERP. I don't remember it being particularly complicated but it didn't really hook us either. I suppose that if we wanted fantasy we were happy enough with RQ and T&T.
We were quite into Call of Cuthulu. Obviously it is quite similar to RQ so it was any easy switch to make but gave a different atmosphere.
