A new post is up at The Lone Delver. I look at some alternate combat methods in T&T including one of my own devising. Have a look and let me know what you think. danhemsgamingblog.blogspot.com/

I read the blog post and found it very interesting. All the more that, being something of a rules junky (up to a point), I recently looked at the origins of the hobby, and waddled through the combat rules of CHAINMAIL, OD&D and a few clones. One document I found very enlightening in this regard is the this document, which describes how to use CHAINMAIL rules to resolve combats in D&D. I can certainly see where the T&T combat system takes its root, especially this emphasis on the weapons and armours (as opposed to pure skill, like in BRP/Runequest or others), and the idea of grouping all parts of each side of the fight in one single result. What strikes me is that all the D&D retro-clones take inspiration from the "alternate" combat system (the now reknown d20 roll), or, for the most obscures, the CHAINMAIL man-to-man or fantasy combat rules (see Dragons at Dawn or Spellcraft & Swordplay), whereas T&T seems to take inspiration from the mass combat system. What surprised me also is that this mass combat system is basically a "number of successes" dice pool mechanic, which was not at all the case with T&T until the introduction of spite damage. I wonder if this aspect could be emphasized even more, without ending with a completely different and un-related system (like the One Rule Engine or something like that). It sure as hell tickles my brain to see all these dice thrown on the table to only add them together!

Great review Dan. I purchased "A Traveler's Tale" a week or so ago and am hoping to run it this week. Your post has certainly whetted my appetite.

I'm happy to see sequels, or even prequels, as long as they are well-written and enjoyable. Sequels purely for the sake of sequels I'm not so wild about...

My preference is that sequels are nice to have, so long as they don't require that you've run or are familiar with the others in the series.

I've posted another article on Solo Design at the Lone Delver. This one deals with the challenges of incorporating running from combat in solo adventures. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. danhemsgamingblog.blogspot.com/
