ragnorakk, Yeah, I know. It seems so wrong. But TTYF itself seems so wrong for ME. Heck, I may use it anyway. I might put it on the 'bad magic' list or I could increase it's level/cost. We'll see. Oh, and thank you for the link, too. Interesting.

I may be too extreme in my view of how the kindreds relate to each other. They are probably more severe isolationist. Humans, having shorter lives may view them as very distant. To me ME is the Hobbit and LOTR, having not steeped myself in all of the lore that Tolkien provided. For my part I would go with post Hobbit pre Ring War. It is the best known (which can cause problems) and allows for other kindred to interact since they just became reaquainted in the Battle of Five Armies. Helping the dwarves clear out that mountain is a way to bring back some of Smaug's loot...who knows what you will find and can sneak off with. The flash/bang spells can all be altered a bit to make them fit and let the players of magic users have fun with the more intellectual applications of the craft. I am not sure if teaching a new system and playing in a new world will be best for the game I am asked to run...still deciding.

Maybe you could give hobbits x 1 in everything, and have attribute modifiers for different types of Men.

Re TTYF: I think there's a scene in the Hobbit where Gandalf casts a spell which causes a 'flash and a bang' and several goblins fall down dead?

I have not read the books for a while. In the Hobbit Gandalf turns acorns into incendiary grenades and I recall in Moria that he blasts a goblin horde with what could be a Hellbomb burst...and who knows what spells are used against the Balrog. I think Gandalf, being an angle...er...Istari...is really just sent to ME to preach, teach and guide. It looks my group has Zombie apocolypse in their head for a game, and a different system so I will not have any field reports for you from ME.

It won't be T&T rules but I will start a new thread with some details...I plan on adapting some of TKD's sanity rules he has on the Cuthulu thread.

Maybe you could give hobbits x 1 in everything, and have attribute modifiers for different types of Men. Attribute mods for the various types of Men is interesting. However it ushers in new questions. Which Men to distiguish? Common Men and High Men? The four or five or six most common or most distinct (Dunedain, Rohirrim, Easterlings, Woses)? All of the types of Men as defined by MERP (being fifteen types in all)? Once you do that, you need to distiguish the types of Dwarves, the types of Hobbits (there are three types there), and certainly the types of Elves. However, it may be a good idea to run with the MERP distinct types in all cases, but not codified. In a system with a small granular level, it makes sense to mechanically differentiate the small differences, but in T&T it doesn't make enough difference to track. But using the types without mechanics can actually help. In fact, it could help it stay even more rules-lite. With a character sheet noting that the PC is Lossoth, neither me nor the player need to codify that the PC would be comfortable in cold weather, know how to ice fish, etc. One that was a Rohirrim would certainly know how to ride a horse and ride it very well; know the value, health and strength of a horse; be able to live, possibly even track and survive in an open plain-type environment and so on. That could leave Talents or skills for the fun stuff and not-so-usual stuff. Something for me to think about.

Zombie Apocalypse! That deserves a whole different thread! Per-lease! I did a "TnT Handful" for just that, in THIS THREAD, and gamepunk26 started a Zombie Apocalypse thread HERE.

Quite right Mach. Maybe you could make a difference between high men and others in terms of attributes but I think it makes sense to add those little details via the cunning methods you mention. I might have to quote you're own advice right back to you: "just wing it!" ;D

As far as additional reading, try "The Atlas of Middle Earth" by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Gives maps of ME through the different ages, drawings of specific sites as well as battle maps and includes composition and size of different forces.

It's been on my Amazon Wishlist for months and it keeps slipping my mind...

It's really good. Not just maps but also lots of quotes from all the books. Fonstad did good work.
