Hi Jeff My first post here, and I want to say thanks very much for BEAN! It's got me interested in role playing again after years of playing miniature wargames. I took two of my sons through Roy Cram's TOMB OF TOKIRAH, and we had a great time. Only one casualty, and everyone else came out laden with magic armour & weapons - and treasure! To celebrate, I made a set of character portraits to decorate the character sheets for the victorious adventurers! Norman was the unfortunate casualty. (This was a spoiler...good job I realised and edited it, eh?). My Asperger's son nearly threw in the towel at that point, but we managed to keep him going and we emerged triumphant! What a great game! (To be fair, we had played the WIZARD's CAULDRON, followed by PRINCELY RANSOM last year, but we never managed to finish it. WORLD OF BEAN and BEANS IN SPACE have fired us up again!) DaveA

This makes me want a whole bunch of Bean miniatures, gussied up like these chaps, as well as other types of beans. Maybe 2014 should be the year for the Deluxe Bean Bag Kickstarter project?

A quick word just to say that I finally jumped in the fire, and introduced my kids to role playing using BEAN! this week-end. It certainly was a success: I simply used the 2-pages dungeon in the rulebook, and they were immediately hooked! The problem is they are too curious: they want to know where the wizard is... and what exactly happened to his house... and what would be the cauldron used for... So I fear I will have to conduct many other adventures to answer all these questions... which is not that a bad thing, isn't it? I bought the World of Beans book for inspiration today: it will certainly be put to good use! Thanks again Jeff for this wonderful game!

In case you haven't seen it... Simon Tranter made a Bean's In Space mini for Sid Orpin: You can get more Bean adventures here: Fabled Words on DriveThruAnd I recommend Beans in Space whole-heartedly. It's a blast. We played it at Beer 'n' Pretzels in spring... Sid used lego figures for minis. You can read about it here: TMG blog

Just a quick heads up to all Bean! fans so that you know that a new Beans in Space solo (written by me, art by Jeff Freels) is now available for download at DriveThru. Here's the link:- rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/129322/A-Bother-With-BweevilsAnd here's the spiel A Bother with B'WeevilsSid Orpin's new solo adventure for the Beans-In-Space setting is a claustraphobic romp through spaceship ventilation shafts infested with the wretched B'weevils! Can you destroy the nest in time? Can you grab a lotta cool loot on the way? Can you stay alive against the B'weevils, and all the other terrible things lurking in the darkness...probably not, but this adventure has a lot of replay value as there are lots of clever options built in to keep it fresh again and again!.

Hey Sid! Had a first attempt at B'Weevils with my youngest son last night, and it was a lot of fun. (Although he didn't get very far before getting minced - literally!) We did get a bit confused about a couple of paragraphs. How can we feedback 'possible errors'? DaveA

Hi Tonsha,
I only just spotted your reply. Feel free to email me with any busted links etc at darrgh@darrghsden.co.uk. Despite all the play testing and proofreading it's very hard to have zero errors.
Cheers for the feedback.

This game is amazing! Does anyone still play this? I just discovered it a year ago after discovering Z-Town, another great Jeff Freels product. I also have what's available for it except Beans in Space which I will get pretty soon here.
It's crazy how effortless it is just to get going as both a player and a GM with this brilliant game!

Having actually learned and starting to have some serious fun with the Deluxe Tunnels and Trolls basic rules (eventually, I'll make my way into the Elaborations of this book), I've already come up with a few simple house rules to spice up any games using Jeff Freel's Bean! the d2 RPG game system. I just wanted to share these on this thread for the benefit of people that love the simplicity of Bean! I've playtested these few simple house rules and they seem balanced enough for my tastes and are directly inspired by Ken St. Andre's Tunnels and Trolls. These just serve to make the three basic Archetypes "feel" more like their T & T counterparts.
Warrior: Warriors have been trained in the use of both weapons and armor, therefore in combat a Warrior Archetype can automatically roll 1 extra Bean x their "modified Mind attribute" in combat. Also, any armor they wear can take one extra damage/hit x their "modified Mind attribute", to simulate their Armor training. To figure up a Warrior's "modified Mind attribute" in combat is simple. Simply take their Mind attribute number, divide by 2 and round down. So, let's say that a Warrior has a Mind of 3. Half of that would be 1.5 and after rounding down, we are left with 1. Therefore, this Warrior will be able to automatically roll 1 extra bean in combat and soak 1 more damage. A warrior with a Mind of 4 would get to roll 2 extra beans in combat and soak 2 more damage!
Rouge: Rogues are extremely talented and can know and learn twice as many Skills as a Warrior and Wizard. So a Rouge that has 3 Mind will have 6 skills and gain 2 more each time the Mind attribute is raised. Furthermore, unlike a Warrior or Wizard, a Rouge may use 2 talents at a time, instead of just 1 per situation, if applicable. This is true even in combat situations. Rouges can also start the game knowing 1 spell for every point in their Spirit Attribute (A great house rule that I got from Mike Holcomb, whom I'll talk about shortly!). However, as per the Bean! rules, they will still have the difficultly rating to cast each spell increased by 1.
Wizard: Mike Holcomb has an awesome (and free) GM adventures for Bean! called Princely Ransom and Gone to the Dogs. Besides providing a memorable games of Bean!, he also provides at the end of these documents some amazing house rules to use in your games and these by themselves are worth checking out if you play Bean! and haven't already! One that I exercise in my games is that Wizards start out knowing every spell in the book! This is a fantastic and powerful house rule that effectively removes the need for a Wizard to spend lot of Gold to learn more spells.
In my games I say that a Wizard does in fact know all the spells in the book at a basic level, but if they seek Spell Training later they can spend the fee of 100 Gold x the Spell's DR to master 1 spell! The amount of spells that each Wizard can master is their Spirit attribute x 2. Once a spell is mastered, the DR of that spell is reduced by 1! This means that mastered Level 1 Spells will automatically succeed unless the Wizard fumbles on his Bean roll! Each Spell can only be mastered once.
Hope you guys that still play Bean! find this amusing and interesting! I'd love to hear some more playtested house rules for this game if you guys have any to share!
