Looking down from the platform, 'Nasan sees a work area below him. A large smelting furnace is running at full blast - a troll works a giant bellows and two dwarves shovel coal from the pile next to it. As the dwarves on the catwalk move the gantry away from the furnace, dwarves below guide the crucible to a mold, pouring out the molten gold to form ingots. Another dwarf comes from the area to the west with a small wheelbarrow load of separated gold dust and nuggets. The empty crucible is lowered within his reach, and he carefully scoops the raw gold into it.
Looking into the work area to the west - separated from the furnace room by a dividing wall that only goes up to the second level of the fortress, 'Nasan can see that the water coming off of the waterwheel is channeled to flow through a stone trough and then through a long sluice box. Dwarves shovel crushed ore into the sluice box where flowing water and gravity separate the rock from the gold. The dirty water flows out through an opening in the south wall of the fortress.
Apparently the waterwheel powers the giant unseen crushing rollers that 'Nasan can hear, but cannot see, beneath the elevated platform.
'Nasan also can see two orcs armed with longbows on the second level catwalks near the southern wall of the fortress.
[GM Comment: My apologies, the layout of the work area in the fortress is a bit complex to describe. Lots of verticality going on.]
Does the stairs lead directly down into the same work area? 'Nasan examines the two doors in the eastern wall: Are the closed? Locked? Can he glean anything from the wear-patterns on their handles and the floor around them about their usage?
If they seem indistinguishable, he takes the southernmost door, glancing around carefully before opening it to make sure no one is looking, pulling it carefully shut behind him.

Exploring the area, 'Nasan sees that the stairs go down to a landing on the second level, where they access the catwalks. Another flight of stairs goes down from this landing to the first level near the smelting furnace.
Both doors in the eastern wall look like they are regularly used, and don't have locks.
'Nasan creeps along the catwalk on the eastern edge of the work area to the southernmost door. Opening it and quickly stepping through, he finds himself in a large open room roughly 25 x 20 meters. There is a flight of stairs going down right before him. There are two doors in the north wall, and a door in the southwest corner.
The room itself has the appearance of an audience chamber. There is an ornate gilt throne up on a dias in the northwest corner. A plush red carpet leads to the throne.

[Bookkeeping: Tough to keep up with a wizard! 'Nasan took 46 AP LUK for meditation, burned 6 WIZ for Hidey Hole (I have him at 10 WIZ now), has 17 staff shots and 29 mirror shots remaining, and takes 10 AP WIZ]
'Nasan takes out a sheet of parchment and begins to pen a letter in his finest script:
"Tenfold For Gin"--
"Dental Hod" will make his move as soon as you're ready. The troubleshooters you ordered from "Headed Dent" will have arrived by the time you read this, and your loyal ones will convey them through the mines hidden in ore carts. Once they reach the fortress, they will expel "The Schoolmaster" as promised, and I hope you will remember my aid to you when your regime change is complete!
Your loving and devoted servant, "Mythes"
Then, switching to his left hand, he adds the following in the sloppiest print he can muster while still attending to legibility:
P.S. EFF, IF YOUR [sic] CONFUSED HE WAS USING "NAG A RAMS"! COGBURN!
After carefully folding the parchment into thirds, and then again into quarters, he throws it on the floor and tramps on it, making sure to grind and smear some mine detritus from his boot into the fibers. Picking it up, he unfolds it theatrically and sits upon the throne, making sure to press his frame into the cushion to make an obvious imprint. Pretending to read the parchment, he grins. Then he carelessly crumples the parchment in his right hand and tosses it over his shoulder.
At last, he strides across the room and listens at the corner door. If he hears nothing, he will open it carefully to glance inside.

As Aonghasan mangles the letter, his invisibility spell wears off. Creeping to the southeastern door with his crossbow ready, he listens. He can hear the desultory conversation of orcs beyond the door. Based on his earlier view of the outside of the fortress and the rounded shape of the wall the door is set into, 'Nasan infers that the door leads to the circular tower on the southeast corner of the fortress.

Game time 4/4 16:10
Please post your next move by noon Thursday, Feb 17.
Before approaching the door, Aonghasan glances out the windows in the south wall. What floor is this? Any guards outside? What's the weather like? Anything else noteworthy?
After hearing guttural utterances through the door, 'Nasan lifts his head, taking a quick glance in the mirror to assure himself of his grace and dignity. Then, bending his elbow and pointing the crossbow up, he bursts into the room:
"There you are!Hurry-- the dwarf slaves have drafted a declaration of independence and they've found a way to control the coal demon! It's been devouring all the guards and they're demanding an audience with Effington, to whom they've given the appellation Lord!
"Don't just stand there filibustering! Quickly! Get ye both to the coal mines! I don't know what Effington promised them, but he may already be headed down there to parlay!"

As Aonghasan looks out the third floor windows, he sees the beautiful mountain view to the east and the road winding its way down Rag Mountain from the fortress. There are no guards apparent outside, and no activity of any interest. That morning it had been sunny and cool with fair weather clouds. Now, with the sun dropping to the west, the clouds are beginning to gather and darken.
In the guard tower, there are two orcs standing with longbows, watching for intruders through the narrow vertical windows in the tower wall. The room is circular, about 9 meters in diameter. A tight spiral staircase in the center of the room goes both up and down from this level.
The orcs stand perplexed, staring at 'Nasan as he tells his tale. One begins to ask questions, but the other shuts him up. "No time. We go now!" The two orcs run through the throne room and off toward the decline shaft.
[Bookkeeping: 'Nasan takes 12 AP CHR. Well played, wizard.]

Upon hearing 'Nasan's words, the first orc drops his bow and turns on the second one, trying to wrestle him to the ground. He is unable to do so, and they continue to struggle with one another. However, the second orc is unable to fire a followup shot.
[Bookkeeping: 'Nasan uses 4 WIZ and 1 staff shot, gains 14 AP WIZ]
