Hello.
Here's the revised 'armour burning' rules from my own house rules. This was discussed in length about a year ago as an alternative to 'doubling' the warriors armour rating.
Warriors may use their armour and shields to greater effect than most; when under facing overwhelming odds the warrior pulls out all of his best moves to intercept enemy attacks. With this option, when the warrior takes damage in combat the player may choose to permanently reduce the effectiveness of his character’s armour and shield rather than suffer a loss of hit points. Each point of armour or shield protection ‘burned’ in this way reduces hit point loss by 3 points.
If the GM agrees, a warrior can burn his own armour and shield points to protect other characters in his party at the same ratio (1 point burned to 3 hit points saved) - this would represent the gallant hero putting himself in harm’s way for the good of his companions.
Armour and shields that have not already been reduced to zero protection can be repaired by the appropriate non-player character (or suitably talented character) for 10% of the item’s original cost per point. Obviously there will come a time when it is cheaper to replace the item rather than repair it. Repairs generally take 1d6 hours multiplied by the item’s maximum protection points (not current rating).
If the GM is feeling generous, he or she may allow other character types to burn armour but each point burned eliminates only one hit point of damage.
Example: Konrak has a total of 8 points of protection from his armour and shield but is forced to take a total of 15 points of damage after a particularly disastrous combat round. His protection immediately reduces the damage he must take to 7 but Konrak’s player isn’t happy with that, Konrak has previously taken some damage and only has 5 hit points left. By permanently burning 2 points of protection, Konrak’s player eliminates 6 of the 7 damage points and must only reduce his remaining hit points by one additional point.

I'm not a big fan of burning armor, but I have had a thought that seems to make sense to me.
What about doubling worn armor and tripling shields when burnt?
It seems that shields are the natural item to use when burning armor and it would seem the simplest to repair in the field.
Sacrificing a shield to absorb the brunt of an attack instead of using it to parry and block as you normally would appear to be the essence of "Burning" armor.
Of course I would naturally double all shield armor against missile attacks as well if I was going to modify the armor rules.

I like the idea of shields being better at 'burning' but implementing that without increasing complexity seems... tricky.

Well, if you're not married to the idea of armor burning, then perhaps you could change it to only allow for shield burning. ? I've never been fond of either burning or doubling. Reason being that they're warrior special abilities that disappear when the equipment disappears. That's bizarre to me and why I prefer extra warrior adds instead. I don't like a supposed special ability to be equipment-dependent and I don't dig that it 'punishes' both barbarian and swashbuckler types. EDIT: Woohoo! My post count is at this moment the same as the year of T&T's release: 1975! ;D

EDIT: my number of posts = the year the revised T&T rules are published. Hee hee! Even though I just proclaimed myself a fundamentalist a moment ago in another thread, I'm realizing that the armor doubling & burning thing doesn't do much for me too for the same reasons that Machfront gives, though I do VERY MUCH like the way you propose burning (taking more hits 'for the team'). That being said, I don't think there's anything wrong with the rules you presented in the OP, and it gives the warriors among us some interesting options.

How does the "repair" work for magical armor and shields?

Our group uses the 4th edition rules ( lightly-modified of course) with the following changes:
Warriors get to add Lvl to Personal Adds instead of doubling Armor, they fight better than the other classes. Rogues stay Rogues but are 'stuck' at Lvl 5 Spells or less. Wizards can use any weapon but lose all Positive Adds when doing so-also, all weapons over 1D (not counting enchantments) need an extra 2 ST and DX to account for lack of training.
As far as Burning goes:
Armor doesn't Burn, unless a Warrior decides to remove the piece and use it like a shield-in which case it can. Shields and weapons can Burn normally. Equipment counts as 1D weapons ONLY for Burning and can be so Burned. Generated AR can be designated by Warrior to any single target in general weapons range(the Interpose) or spread out to the group (the Generic Enemy distraction).
In one episode, it went something like this:
Rogue(paralyzed by Giant Scorpion Venom)- Well, it's been nice knowing you guys-hey...we had a good run, didn't we?
Warrior(trapped behind Iron portcullis)-One..last..HEAVE..we're not down yet-OH GODS MY SPINE!!!
Wizard-(semi-conscious and down to 1 CN)-so...cold...Daddy? I thought you were dead...and Mom too? you..came back for me...
The Enemy...one Dead Giant Scorpion, two Beheaded Grave Wights, a no-longer Living Statue pulverized beyond recognition, one TTYF'ed Necromancer...and one lightly damaged Cave Troll, picking up his axe and walking slowly towards the Wizard...
Warrior(rattles cage)-HEY!! Fight ME, Ugly!!
Troll-nuh, dis guy killed da Boss, he's gotta die...nuthin personal. Don't worry, I gotta place in my dance card for you LATER...
Warrior-Weapons beyond my reach-shield is Riven-only thing left to use..
(tosses Bag O Loot between the bars and into the path of a Trollish Axe)
(trollish Axe shreds contents, cracks precious pearls and opals, cuts through an ornate Mithril Disk-the shock causes the Troll to nearly drop his weapon)
Troll-HEY!! I SAID i'd GET to you, OKAY???
Rogue-nooooo, my precious little fenceable BABIES....
Wizard-My..Family Crest...My -three-hundred-yearoldirreplaceableMITHRALCRESTI'LLKILLYOUKILLYOUKILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!
Troll-hey, you've got a little somethin' left, this might be FUN-
Wizard-ULTIMAAAAA!!!!!!
(uniquely-researched Ultima Spell blows gaping hole in Cave Troll's chest)
Troll(looks down)-so...Wizards really CAN Berserk? The guys in Vahalla will NEVER believvvv....(dies)
(Wizard fall unconscious)
Rogue-If I weren't paralyzed right now you would be so, soooo DEAD....um...still paralyzed BTW, and Bazooka Joe just went beddie-bye over there...a little HAND here?
Warrior-I'm WORKINGohGodsmusclecraMP! ON! AAAGHH!! ITTT!! ONE MORE PUSH!!
My Players lose more Stuff that way... ;D

I know this is a thread jack - BUT: I've never been fond of either burning or doubling. Reason being that they're warrior special abilities that disappear when the equipment disappears. That's bizarre to me and why I prefer extra warrior adds instead. I finally hit on a "solution" that I like. Mach, you say extra adds - I get it. And I think that instead of doubling armor hits taken, warriors (and no other type) should be able to trade personal adds for "hits taken" at a favorable ratio - say 1 add = 2 hits taken. End thread jack
