The battle to reclaim the "Serpents Head Iron Ore Mine" near the dwarven village of Lakanaba began again in earnest today.
Taran, Fin, and Grimlar are all holed up at the "26 Sheep" Inne. Boarded up might be a better term however, for in the two days since their first retreat from the mine, the town of Lakanaba has been overrun with pink, rubbery, kickball sized mutants with six eyes surrmounting their globular, plastcine bodies, and two strong, sharp birdlike claws which they use with an almost velociraptor type quickness. The town is overrun with at least thirty of them by last count and all homes and shops have now been barricaded. Most of the livestock has been bled dry by these critters, but they don't even seem to EAT their prey.... just mangle it and move on to thenext thing that moves.
Into this situation walk two warrior wizards just beginning to gain experience in the ways of the world. Mephilas has rescued a village from giant beetles ( a wooden likeness of Mephilas was erected in Snellville shortly thereafter), and he has taken on some kobolds and even a witch and not come out the worse for wear. KI is from the eastern lands of the Orientatum, her hair raven black, matching with her strange black robes. She practices strange forms of movement... the "mantis katas" she calls them.
Approaching town at rou ghly the same time these two are forced together by crisis when they are attacked by the roving bands of gorbels terrorizing Lakanaba and the surrounding farmland. NINE of the super elastic bubbletastic freaks close in on their pray. KI immediately unsheathes her ancestral soul katana and cleaves through two of them, and yeaahhh! bitzes they friggin EXPLOOODE! KI's hair is frazzled by the blast and her flash seared. Mephilas casts TTYF on another and it explodes as well, far enough away not to damage Mephilas. the remainder of the gorbels, now totaling 6, move in for the kill. KI makes a third level dex save and kicks one of them like a big kickball into the tress off in the distance. Two more of them attach themselves to tender unarmored places on her body and begin squeezing. there is blood.
"Can I tear it off??!" asks Fin, playing KI "second level strength roll." 1 success, one failure. in the case of the success, it is removed from her thigh and drop kicked, but not before tearing away a large chunk of flesh. the other continues to draw blood.
Mephilas is also struggling with two attached gorbels. Not wanting to explode them next to his person, he tries to squeeze the air out of them with this hands. I rule each hand can have 1 die plus half his adds. the air is squeezed from the globular clawed beasts, making a pitiful mewling sound, not unlike air being squeezed out of the neck of a balloon.
they are finished, and Mephilas slings them to the ground like wet pancakes...KI observes the success of this manuver and manages to squeeze the air out of the shere attached to her shoulder, but not before it has left her a fairly bloody mess. The two new companions hurry on to the Inn and their poundings at the door bring the woman who runs the place to draw back the bolts.
Mephilas greats his old friend Taran and is introduced to Fin and Grimlar. KI sulks in a corner and orders the last duck to survive the gorbel onslaught.
Fin hits on KI ( both characters played by Fin) giving her his "hey baby" routine and making a charisma roll, magically supplented by his very attractive glasses and silver engraved cigarette lighter. He fails.
Ki remains aloof from the group until someone speaks to her in the universal language.... GOLD.
the group decide to take rest from travail for one more night.... making an assault on the mine in the morning.
All night their sleep is disturbed by the clawing of gorbels seeking a way into the Inn... but the dwarves have built it well, and the security measures hold.

Sounds like a fun session. Kudos to Fin for hitting on one character with another - that's usually good for some silly moments!

It was really funny.
All the moreso because the Fin character has an unusually high charisma for a 4th level warrior. Fin takes frequent advantage of this, convincing people to do all manner of seemingly stupid things. We always roleplay it first.... before the roll is made... and Fin always passes himself off in the most casually ridiculous way. so when he gave the "hey baby come sit down next to me." line, along with the cheezy wink to his own totally aloof and uptight Oriental "ghost face killah" type character... well, it was super funny.
Anyway, what I transcribed above was really only about the first 10 minutes of the game session! The gorbels did tie in with Bloodnut the Troll and his Rhino Riders.... the gang which had taken over the mine, and were an attempt on my part (partially inspired by Scott from HRP blog) to take a monster almost universally regarded as "totally lame" in the gaming world, introduce it to two newer gamers who had never even heard of them before, (and would thus have zero preconceptions about them, )and see if we could make something fun happen.
we did. and as far as my game is concerned, any monster that explodes cannot possibly be totally lame.

THE OLD IS MADE NEW
I regret that, school having started and me preparing to move to a new house, i have no time to fully transcribe my games.
I did want to talk a little about the last game with Fin and Kit however.
The plot was pretty basic. Taran, along with his trusty dwarven henchman Grimlar, wanted to start a weaponsmithing business. Both had taken smithing as talents.
Taran managed to purchase an intact smithing shop from an old centaur looking to get out of the business, but he needed a contact for raw iron at a good price. The "Olde Serpents Head Iron Mine" in the dwarven dutchy of Lakanaba, three days ride from Moribund would be an ideal contact
Along with their mischievious friend Fin, and initially Moonshine and Ella Noir, they set out for Lankanaba, encountering a few problems in the Tulgeywood while on the way. These they handled with aplomb.
On arrival in Lankanaba however, it became apparent that the mine had been taken over by a gang of rhinocerous riders let by a troll named Bloodnut the Mighty.
This (biker) gang was composed of five additional members ALL culled from 1980's pop culture but stunningly, wonderfully, incredibly unfamiliar to the two kids at my game table. among them:
Grizzlor- a tazmanian sasquatch. MR200 The mighty and savage Grizzlor is covered with long matted fur over 60% of his body. he has two enormous upward jutting tusks, wears big black boots and some chest armor with a steel bat emblem at the center. He uses an arbalest crossbow. If Grizzlor rolls 6 or more spite damage he goes into a tazmanian whirlwind giving him the equivalent of a whammy spell and tripling his dice for the next round.
Trapjaw- steamtech enhanced hobgoblin MR 130. Trapjaw has the equivalent of a Legend of Zelda hookshot attached to his right arm. The chain inside is 30' long. He has a steamtech enhanced repeater crossbow and also carries a battleax. If he rolls 4 or more spite in melee, the steam enhanced beartrap that serves as his lower jaw is allowed to bite.. doing 3 d6 additional damage which is also capable of burning ( shredding) armor points.
Webstor- harvestman type spider dude MR 160. Webstor is a six armed, six eyed spiderfreak dude. He has two venom dripping protruding fangs, but his most dangerous weapon is his crossbow. The weapon is actually an undead skeletal spider, which has had its exoskeleton twisted, through some vile ritual into the shape of a crossbow. This weapon can fire the eaquivalent of a glue you spell every round up to ten charges per day.
Webstor's web shrouded lair proved to be the most difficult and exciting encounter, mostly because instead of the boys getting to shoot first, Webstor saw them coming. When they were all boxed up in a small space outside his lair, he fired off one "glue you" spell with his crossbow and coated ALL of the PC's in sticky web-like goo. ( effectively halving their fighting capabilities). Fin was still able to fire off two rounds with the set of matching magical flintlocks ( loaned to him by Ella, who by rights won them from Wang Chung the vampire after his timely death)
Webstor however, watches ,stunned as both lead balls drop to the floor before stiking him. ( Fin had stolen two gemstone eyes from the statue of Gristlegrim in the mine's chapel, and unbeknownst to him as to why, his magical weapons no longer funtioned to his benefit). The spider beast lunged forward at the now effectively unarmed and webbed up Fin. It is a small matter to bite him and render him helpless. In the dark, confused chaos that ensues after the flash, Webstor grabs fin from the small alcove, and suspends him in webbing. then he takes the pistols and stuffs them into his chest harness.
Mephilas unleashes a ttyf. KI does the same. Both spells hit Websor at the same time and he is knocked briefy from the webb-y funnel he occupies near the roof of the chamber. But the party cannot act this round. and Webstor subsequently bites and poisons Mephilas the paragon also. Now its up to Taran, grimlar and KI. The boys are sweating as Webstor moves in for another go round. Grimlar has a sling and pops Webstor solidly as he approaches.... Taran is holding the only torch! KI fires ttyf realizing death may be close!
These blows hurt Webstor but his MR is still in the 80's and i don't redcude his initial dice... only his adds.
Then Fin remembers Mephilas's sleepy fairy Ralph. "Get Ralph to come out and cast ttyf!" Fin yells desperate
"but he's all webbed up." Kit responds
" give me a 3rd level luck roll." i say.
this fairy has good luck. Ralph is free, having squeezed out of an opening in the pack.
He starts casting ttyf. Ralph is also smart.... with a 24 IQ.
that last ttyf sends Webstor scurrying out the back entrance calling for Trapjaw and Grizzlor.
Fin is worried about those guns. "Follow him! keep casting ttyf until you are out of Wiz!"
Ralph does.... and Webstor dies right when Ralph runs out of wiz.
Still sick and dizzy, Fin and Mephilas are cut down. The pistols... which will fail yet again in the fight against Trapjaw are returned.
relief is had by everyone.
it was one of those encounters that actually could have gone south into a tpk.
saved by a fairy.

this is a more close-up view of the first room of my current adventure for Taran, Fin, and Ella Noir. The town of Hollyfall had no harvest this year, and if someone doesn't bring down the mad witch elf: Queen Frostine, then the residents are unlikely to make it through what is already the worst winter ever on "Cold Mountain" Attachments:

That's really nice work, devadasi. Have I mentioned how much I envy people with artistic talent? (OK, it's more 'gee, it would be nice to be able to do that' than full-on envy, but that's the general thrust of it...) That said, I'm very glad that you - and all of the other clever artistic types - share your work with us here.

here are a couple of photos of the second map. The staircase in the rear of the first room ( yesterday's map) leads down into this area. Minatures are here to provide scale. Attachments:

it was too large to get in one photo and still retain the detail, so here is the left side of that map. I still have the 2nd level and Queen Frostine's 3rd level lair to go, but i should have time to get it done before we play again Attachments:

The mammoth-sicle is very cute. And the icy spiral stairs are just beautiful - you can just about feel the chill emanating from them...
