Unfortunately for Horace Lambert, the mayor of the small town of Hollyfall, he was very good looking as a young man. That, and he enjoyed a romp with the young ladies of Hollyfall valley, and the milkmaids in particular, for Horace Lambert was quite fond of milk. It was his daliance with an elven ingenue Larine Frostine though, that brought his days as a player of fields to an end though. Miss Frostine, it turns out, was one of those crazy, bi-polar, kinda girlfriends that a player of fields eventually run into. When Horace got her pregnant but refused to subsequently wed her, Larine went into crazy girlfriend coniption mode and threatened to slay her half elven offspring. Horace managed to save himself and his infant in a bold bluff, but not before both he and the child, Squab had been given the heads of a sheep. Along with the polymorphing of both heads, Fronstine declared she would returned when the child had "come of age" to claim what was hers. The ensuing years were kind, and even with the head of a sheep, both Horace Lamb and Squab Lamb remained popular with the populace of Hollyfall Valley, enough so that Horace is now in his second three year term as Mayor of the town, and squab is regarded as an eligible young bachelor and marriage prospect despite his sheeps head, after al, there is money and political connections to think about. But when it snowed in midsummer it was clear, to Horace Lamb at least, that something might be amiss. By September the valley was blanketed in heavy snow, and it was clear there would be no Harvest this year. Its fortunate then when a band of adventurers the "Moribund Marauders" ( or at least the better portion of them) arrive in town. The valley enters a very deep and dangerous freeze overnight and the remaining townpeople cooped up at the Hollyfall Inn seem worried and forlorn. when Squab goes missing, Mayor Lamb tells his whole story, and begs the experienced heroes: Taran, Fin, Mephilas, and Ella Noir to go to "Cold Mountain" and bring back his son. Play report to follow shortly Attachments:

The "Moribund Marauders" are holed up in the Hollyfall Inne as the adventure begins.
The furniture is now being burned for heat, as it has been more than a week since it stopped snowing and since trips to the outhouse don't involve a frozen urine stream.
It is prenaturnally cold outside. Mayor Lamb has decided to lead the remaining townspeople on a freezing run to attempt to get out of the valley and closer to Moribund and safety. Concerns for his son notwithstanding, he feels this is his duty if the citizens are to survive at all.
A first search: ( luck roll please?".... "I made a 1st level") reveales only enough furs for one of the adventurers to have sufficiently protective winter clothing, but Fin makes use of his charisma enhancing "John Lennon" glasses to convince the townpeople to rip enough fur off of their OWN coats to stich three xtra coats for the other characters ( 4th level charisma success).
"I suavely put on my glasses and ask if they are SURE there aren't any more furs around."
Fortunately two of the farmer women have a seamstress talent, who knew?
Now even with their warmest winter coats, I make it clear that this is a hideously awful kind of cold, with a freezing wind that cracks their lips. Each hour spend outside now drains one point of strength and one combat ad temporarily.
By the time that the heroes come to the base of self-proclaimed Queen Frostine's lair, all are down 2 strength points and in danger of loosing another soon. Scouting slightly ahead, Ella Noir makes a 2nd level luck roll ( I think daughter might have made this saving roll more than once when we weren't looking, but HJ is still 9 and can get away with a little cheating). She discovers that looks like an entrance at the base of the mountain, which looks like a giant, inverted icicle.... grown from the ground up... magically. It is flanked by two large, rounded, friendly looking snowmen.
Ella reports back to the others, waiting back on the nearby ridge. Nobody believes for even a moment that those two snowmen aren't a threat. ( Kit had even seen me drawing two giant, ax wielding snowmen... so).
The three maintain cover as they decend the ridge line ( all succeeding at 1st level luck rolls) and then hide behind the sparse cover just inside missile range.

As usual Fin eagerly begins the first volley. he is wielding 2 magical flintlock pistols, siezed from Wang Chung the vampire ( one by rights belongs to Ella Noir, but at the outset it was agreed that Fins proficiency with missile weapons makes him a logical choice to take it "temporarily", my daughter somewhat reluctantly agrees, for Fin in real life also has a fairly high charisma).
The head of the Snowman on the right is partially blown apart by the hail of magical lead.
"Call Fire!" says Mephilas "on which snowman?" "the other one" "I also call fire!" says Ella, the rogue, who learned call fire from moonshine the wizard. "on which one?" "same as Taran"
2d6 fire damage melts into the second snowmans head and side.
Snowman #1 remove a firemans ax from his chest cavity and charges toward the team on the hill. Because snowman #2 took FIRE damage I decide that he will spend an xtra round trying to re-ice himself.
"Magic arrow of blasting power at the charging one!" calls Fin. One of Fin's magical arrows flies from his powerful bow and strikes the first snowman full in the chest. At this point it isn't even necessary to roll it out.
"BamF! snowman #1 collapses into a heap of white powder and blows away in the wind."
"Call flame again." Mephilas says
Ella saves her more limited, roguish wizardry. The second snowmen charges forward and Taran, more comfortable in a straight up, head on fight charges forward, backed by Mephilas. Fin, because of the cold, currently does not have the ST required to weild his own sword. Nonetheless,The fiend doesn't stand a snowball's chance in this match-up. Not with reduced ads. Mephilas and Taran can generate a fair amount of damage, between Mephilas' magic trollhammer and Taran wielding the Mebius Blade. I roll to see if the snowman generates any spite at that point, but it does not, and also disperses with a "Bamf!" leaving the fighters faces covered in snow.
Down the hill at the entrance two gaslamps burn, flanking either side of a rhime encrusted wooden door bound with iron.
Mephilas uses detect magic and determines that the gaslamps are magical, but only in the sense that they are everburning ( level 2 IQ success)
Fin pries them off of the wall and sticks them in the snow and the adenturers warm themselves around the flames for a good fifteen minutes. I award Fin 50 exp. for the idea, and return all characters to full strength.
they face the door. Fin kicks it and suffers one con point of damage ( stubbed toe, temporary...20 minutes till better)

Further investigation by Mephilas who chips away some of the encrusted rhime, indicate that some kind of explosive runes are engraved on the door.
Second level IQ save indicates they will go off if the door is FORCED. Both Ella and Mephilas know "Knock Knock." Lock tight has been cast on this door at a higher level, but I rule that if Mephilas can pass an IQ or LK roll of higher than 4th level he can open the door.
doubles assist, but the door swings open, I forget which attribute was used.
Incide a small entry room which appears to have almost grown out of the ice is a clear ice pool, lit from beneath with a soft blue light. Inside they see reflections of themselves... as if they were on camera and the pool was the security screen. Two characters veer left and two right to skirt the pool. it makes everyone a little nervous, but doesn't actively DO anything to prevent their advancement into the next chamber.
And what a magnificent chamber it is! With a domes ceiling nearly 40 feet high, and a shallow, bowl like floor of slick ice, it is truly a wonder to behold.
More disturbing though, is the titan sized frosty head in the center of the room, with its bruise colored frozen skin, and its thick beard dripping in ice.
"I use my ventriloquism to make my voice go way over here behind the giants head" says Ella.
The giants head gets startled out of its sleep and makes a mighty "harumph!"
Shallowly embedded in the ice wall around the great bowl are living skeletons. their bone feet have been refromed into ice skates. They break out of the ice at the giant heads call, forming two "teams" of skaters. At the head of each team is the largest skeleton, perhaps once an ogre, and these two each bear a large skiked shield.... our "rammers".... they are flanked in a wedge shape by two skeletal skaters weilding halberds, our 'jammers" and lastly by two skeletons with a scimitar in each hand.. our slashers.
into the bowl they skate, VERY swiftyl, as both teams have "little feets" cast on them.

"call flame on the patch of ice just in front of this team!" Mephilas says, pointing at the battlemat.
"I call flame in front of the other team!" yells Ella.
( my son gets annoyed when his sister "copies" him in this game, but he chills a bit when he realizes it might help them stay alive)
I decide that team 1 must all make dx checks to skate across the flamed ice. First level. All skeletons are determined to have a dex or 12 and Little Feets will not change that.
The big guy and the two slashers make it across from team 1. the guys with the halberds both fall.
Team 2 looses 4 members.
The big guy and the two slashers from team 1 bear down on the group... spiked shield held forward and approaching like a locomotive. Ella and Taran raise shields and prepare to melee... Fin notches a blasting power arrow, and fires.
But then we remember he is holding a kris in his belt. the arrow fizzles. The first team slams into Ella and Taran doing six spite damage, and penetrating Ella's weak armor for three more.
"okay, I'm not doing that again" says Ella, though she dealt some spite as well.
fin tosses his Kris aside and notches another blasting power arrow... with a second level dex check he will be in time to get the arrow off before team # slams into all of them.
It works. The ensuing impact leaves all of team 2 floundering on wet ice.
"I disguise myself as an icicle." says Ella
"..."
"Hannah what??..."
"Kit, I HAVE disguise as a talent!"
"Hannah you..."
"okay ella, give me a second level luck roll."
she succeeds
"okay, with a little snow and ice piled on you are able to look like the rough equivalent of an icicle."
Fin picks up his kris and rushes forward to finish off the last floundering skeletons in melee. The giant head spews a cone of "freeze please" directly at Fin when he rushes out, but he reminds me about the kris.
"Oh My God!" exclaims Taran, who also wears a kris "i run out and moon him!"
So Taran runs out and moons the head, which becomes so enraged that it doesn't observe Ella and Mephilas, ( who don't have krises) sneak around it from the backside.
ella reminds me she looks like an icicle.

Now it so happens that taran carries around two iron spikes made of kris metal. ( since he is the owner of both an old mine and a weapons shop, I have ruled that taran has fairly easy access to the metal itself).
" I take one of the kris iron spikes and hammer it into the head."
I rule that this not only will prevent further problems with the things bad breath, but that it effectively kills the head as well.
the group stealthily moved down the very large icy stair at the other end of the hall.
"I still look like an icicle." "okay." ( boys shake their heads.... but they are human and young.... how are they to understand the higher level thought processes of young elven maidens)
down the stairs a giant wooly mammoth is frozen in ice. this chamber is not so large as the last one, but the icicle lined cieling still is very high up. passages branch both east and west.. wide and high.... the walls illuminated from within with pale blue light.
Luck checks ensure that all characters are soon allerted to voices grumbling off in the distance from the eastward moving passage. Stealthily, will fin at the front the marauders move in the direction of the voices.
Again they are met with a choice. Another icy stair headed upwards lies directly ahead. the voices come from a passage headed right, jaggedly carved in the ice, and most intriguingly, the passage to the left seems to be full of steam.
After a brief and hasty discussion the party investigates the source of the steam first. passing down another large icy stair, they come to a room with a hole in the ice. the water underneath is actually hot. But the source of the heat becomes less interesting when confronted with other things about the room..... like the fact that it contains a giant wooden bucket, a giant scrubbrush and a giant sized bar of soap.
"Holy crap! there are giants down here!"
Fin looks almost giddy. Taran, mephilas, and Ella look nervous. Fins been know to get rash, and....
We head down the passage toward the giants!" fin says. "I'll be in the lead. I've got both of wang chungs pistols cocked and ready, and I'm kinda being all stealthy.
Ella stations herself in the middle. still disguised as an icicle.

Sneaking back down the source passage Fin makes a first level luck roll. he spies a pony sized Frost Wolf-o back in the chamber which housed the frozen mammoth. it appears to be sniffing around.
"Can i jump across the junction without it seeing me.?"
" Second level luck roll."
success.
Taran and Mephilas both subsequently make second level luck rolls to cross the passage junction. Ella needs only a first level luck roll, as she is currently disguised as an icicle.
All of the marauders succeed at their rolls and move on down the icy, frozen hallway. Giant footprints, are pressed into the hallways pack snow floor. Passing through an oblong room in which giant weapons.... huge stone hammers and such are hanging from the walls. Also several bear furs are on display.
In the subsequent room a rhime giant matron is serving her husband soup and they are sitting down to dinner.
"Shame that Frostine won't let us make a properly spiced soup with that little lamb headed boy she is holding prisoner." the frost matron grumbles.
"Yarg. I grow tired of venison, venison, every day venison." her husband grumbles in agreement.
She sits down to dine with her husband, and immediately takes two balls of lead to the back of the head. ( Fin makes a 5th level dex save) Her head flies forward and splashes into her soup, covering her husband with venison broth and giant blood.
"Arrrg! Little human, rip your legs off and suck your bones I will!" Shouts the male rising from the table and rushing towards Fin. fin jumps around a corner and hides.... right next to an odd looking icicle.
The angry rhime giant rounds the corner, and where Fin had been, now stand Taran and Mephilas, both slightly stunned at how poorly this plan has worked out for them.
"KILL YOU!" screams the fur clad pale skinned colossus and takes a handy ax from the wall and charges Mephilas and Taran.
Taran and Mephilas total 124. But the giants total is 190 +5 spite. Taran and Mephilas both have armor ratings in the low to high 20's due to being a warrior and a paragon respectively, but in the end both of them find themselves with CON scores in the single digits, or close to it The giant takes 7 spite.
Mephilas unleashes TTYF and his fairy familiar Ralph also comes out of the backpack to unleash a TTYF. Fin fires a blasting power arrow, Ella holds back.
"ella they've got a chance of beating this guy this round if you run in and help." i say
"okay. ella takes her demi-lune and attacks."
In the next round, male giant, ella, and mephilas melee. Fin passes a 4th level dex save and climbs the giants back. Ralph casts another TTYF
the party looses melle again, but not by nearly as much, because of the giants reduced ads. armor takes all but the spite, and Ella, Mephilas, and taran must split 6 spite.
Fins sword plunges into the giants neck unprotected after he makes another dex roll. The giant takes full damage and stumbles. The others have to act quickly to finish him off, because Ma has just come round the corner.
But Ma is already significantly weakened, and with all four adventurers attacking melee at once, she is finished off quickly.
Some gold and trinkets are available for the taking. Including a healing potion, but it is Fin who makes off with the prize drinking horn.
