Exodus
You have all felt it coming for years, but none knew what it was. A force that seemed to quiet the world, some great spell cast by a demon king, a mummified sorceror, the by-blow of some fairie spectacle - the source, the cause, and the reasons, if any, are unknown to you.
Slowly over the years it has approached, and only now has a means of escape been conjured. The wizards' guild has opened a portal to another world, an unknown and wild land, and they exercise no discretion regarding who or what passes through. They have made known to every living thing with a mind to understand that there is this means of escape.
The seers and astrologers say that there is little time left before the End arrives, the world grows almost notably quieter every day.
The portal has been open for a few days. Curious observers have reported seeing a band of goblin wolf riders numbering 50 or more pass through, along with a quartet of surly wraiths some hours later by the dim new moon. The mannish village of Rukspek stands abandoned to a man, as they have all packed up and followed their priest through the gate, and it is suggested that the sprites of Tharap Shee wandered through in idle curiosity.
A flock of gargoyles flew down from the wastelands of Shakhur, and stole the wagon train of an unfortunate pioneer family. Spawn of the Great Dragon have terrorized and razed a path terminating at the portal - the numbers and varieties of creatures that have already passed through is anyone's guess.
-------------------------------------
Here is the idea.
The portal opened by the wizards guild will deposit those who travel through at a random point in a different world, and the trip is one-way. The guild has hemmed and hawed and given very little information when asked about the world on the other side, except that its climate is temperate and mostly uninhabited.
The way I would like to try this is to have each of the characters go with a group of colonists, who have had time to organize their parties, secure materials, equipment, provisions, etc - and they look to warriors and wizards of all stripes to lead them through the gate. If the players are interested in this stage of the process, they are welcome to take an active role in provisioning and preparation of the expedition(i.e. present a bill of goods). This would allow for a home base, but would also entail some obligation to the colonists - to explore for them, help build & defend if necessary, etc. The colonists will be mostly or all of the same specie as the PC, and I'll generate them - they will likely just be MR'ed unless they need more detail.
One thing that I feel I should make clear is that the new world is unknown, and is thus assumed dangerous. Many wizards gone rogue claim that the new world is indeed very dangerous. If the characters are killed or the colony fails or whatever, please do not take it personally. The player is welcome to become the head of another group to go in and try again, up until the portal must be closed due to the coming of the End.
I tried something like this a while back and now I've become a co-GM of a game put on by this fellow: hillcantons.blogspot.com/search/label/domain%20game . This may be kind-of a weird rationale and might not "sound like T&T", but if you're interested, I'd like to give this a try. The idea right now is that if you'd like to play, create a thread in this forum with your main character's name and race, we will work out the details in those. If you'd like to invent or re-interpret a race, say like Fire Elfs, or Axahalugan Necrotites - include some details (stat mods, special abilities, etc). I'd like to have fun with this!
