The sudden crack of thunder, as if the earth itself had clapped for attention, brings the hobb to his feet, sax drawn, looking for danger. He pivots quickly on the balls of his feet and, as he turns, he sees the cloud of coal dust, still bound by the lanterns light, suddenly coalesce. Ozenda's silhouette, at first indistinct, emerges from the soot, clothes begrimed and the faint pink of abraded skin evident. The stygian cloud swirls in front of her for a moment and then streaks into the darkness of tunnel four.
Ozenda sways for a moment on her feet and then collapses. Bitsa leaps to help and manages to stop the wizard from cracking her head on the floor. Footsteps sound in the corridor behind him and someone begins to clamber over the gong in the passageway. Bitsa glances back and sees a large orc, with several more behind him, advancing his way. The hobb lays Ozenda down and quickly adds his bola to his left hand. Crouching, he challenges them, knowing he's outmatched.
He levels his blade at the lead orc, sighting along it's line, "No, further. You'll not have her. Not after what she's accomplished."
Bitsa risks a glance behind him and sees that the wizard still breathes. Turning back to the orcs he notices that none of them hold a weapon. They all bear some sort of injury, mostly cuts and bruises just beginning to purple, though nothing obviously life threatening. Is it possible...? Did Tenkar win...?
"Hoi, Tenkar!" the little thief shouts down the hall.

"Hoi, Bitsa!" Tenkar shouts back. "Allow these fine gennelmens ta leave th' way we came in! Don't be loppin' their heads off!" Escorted by five bruised and battered miners carrying bloody picks, the orc guards trudge past Bitsa and the collapsed Ozenda uncaring. They turn left into tunnel four and soon Bitsa can hear their curses as they attempt to climb down the rock wall into the large natural cavern.
[Although these guards are leaving our story, they do deserve an epitaph. All four of the common orc guards were down to single digit hit points. Skullsplitter was by far the healthiest after the battle. I assume that one guard dies climbing down the wall, and one dies attempting to cross the chasm. They are amazed at the piles of goblin and orc bodies laying at the base of the cone of rock. They look into Tallinoor's open crypt and quickly filch the gold piece and two silver pieces. Cursed with bad luck, Skullsplitter and the remaining two guards are killed and eventually eaten by the big brown bear.]
As Bitsa turns away from watching the departure of the orc guards in tunnel four, he sees a dim red light coming from the now open doorway to the coal pit demon's lair.

Bitsa waves back to Tenkar and stands back out of the way as the orcs file into tunnel four and out of sight. He turns back as Ozenda begins to stir. The wizard leverages herself into a sitting position propped against the wall. The ghost of a smile plays across her face. Looking down Ozenda picks up a large, rough, translucent stone.
"What's that?" Bitsa asks, intrigued.
"A gift from the earth elemental," Ozenda shares, "Considering it was the living embodiment of coal I would think this would be a diamond."
The thief's eyes go wide with Ozenda's proclamation. "Is it magical? Is it what we were looking for?"
"I do not believe it is magical, other than how it came into being. I think it is simply a parting gift. Though at the moment, you would have a greater facility than I at determining whether it is indeed magical. I have exhausted all my mana." She holds the diamond out to the thief, "Here, as I have no way to carry this, would you place it in your pack?"
Bitsa's hands shake a little as he accepts the huge diamond. The thief marvels at the treasure he holds and then wonders at the wizard carelessly handing it off. Then again, look how she came by it... Nope, this gets returned safely... I may be a thief but I certainly don't need to suddenly grow a tail, a second head or something else equally horrific... He quickly places the gem stone in his pack, alongside the gold bars safely rescued from The Donald's quarters. Thinking for a moment, he pulls out the small bag of provisions and hands it to Ozenda. To distract himself, "There's a red glow coming from the demon's door, now. Maybe we should go check that out?"
Ozenda accepts the provisions with a smile of thanks. Pulling her feet under her she pushes up against the wall and slowly finds her balance. Leaning there for a moment, she explores the contents of the bag and pulls out an apple. Ozenda hands the bag back to Bitsa, who helps himself to a wedge of cheese.
Thus fortified, the two slowly approach the door to the demon's ex-prison and lean around the corner to see inside.

Where once stood a wall of coal-laced rock, there is now an archway. A short hallway leads into a chamber - perhaps 10 meters wide by 20 meters deep - rough hewn from the surrounding rock. A thick layer of coal dust covers the floor and the room is lighted by numerous crystals on the walls that glow a dull red.
Near the rear of the chamber, Bitsa and Ozenda can see a low pedestal of marble. On top of the pedestal is a dressmaker's dummy, and draped over the dummy's shoulders is a short red cape which seems to be made of silk. A crackling force-field of raw energy comes up from the pedestal and surrounds the dummy like a bell jar.
Looking closely at the base of the pedestal, you see an open niche near the bottom which contains a scroll. Just above the niche are five brass tumblers with numbers on them, rather like a suitcase lock.
There is little else of interest in the chamber.

Bitsa and Ozenda trade looks, "Well, I can't see why the room would be trapped. I'm pretty sure the demon was the trap and you took care of that." Bitsa says. "Just the same, why don't you let me go first?" The begrimed wizard silently offers the thief the passage and falls into step behind him.
Bitsa steps into the hallway cautiously, scanning all surfaces for signs of traps. Just because I don't think he would have bothered doesn't mean he didn't... The half-pint housebreaker looks for arrow or dart slots, trip wires, murder holes in the ceiling, he even checks the floor for disturbances in the dust.
"I thought you said the only trap was the demon?" Ozenda quips at the thief's caution.
Bitsa breaks away from his study of the hallway arch into the room itself and looks back over his shoulder. The leather soles of his sandals rasp across the coal dust coating most everything. "No, I said I couldn't see why Salazar would bother, not that he wouldn't." Satisfied the arch isn't booby trapped Bitsa stands and waves Ozenda along, "Come on, let's see what this new conundrum is." Ozenda, weariness evident in her coal-dusted features even in the crimson light of the stones, follows in the thief's footsteps.
The two would-be-liberators step through the room, small puffs of coal dust accompanying every step. They stop in front of the pedestal and take in the sight. "You sure this cape is what we're looking for? Those crystals in the wall look magical to me. How do we know the cape isn't just a distraction?" Bitsa asks.
Ozenda looks around at the stones and then studies the cape clad dummy, "Salazar is ego-centric and megalomaniacal. He is pathologically afraid of anyone taking his power. Acting from such a position he would take steps to ensure those artifacts he has gathered are well protected. The cape is and the stones are not. Ergo, the cape is the item of power here."
Bitsa shrugs, willing to allow Ozenda her reasoning, "You're the wizard." He bends to study the scroll, again checking for traps - pressure sensitive plates, strings attached to the scroll. Once satisfied that the scroll is just what it seems, he picks it up carefully and hands it to Ozenda.
The wizard slowly unrolls the scroll to read it's message, being careful to memorize the contents. Some of her teacher's scrolls had built-in fail-safes causing the scroll to vanish in a puff of smoke shortly after being unrolled. With the scroll gone, the spell would be safely out of hands it wasn't meant for. Ozenda wished to avoid that scenario here.
As the wizard reads the scroll, Bitsa wanders over to a nearby wall and begins to study one of the glowing crystals. He holds a hand out to the crystal to gauge the amount of heat it gives off. A perpetual light source could be really useful...

Finding no sign of traps, Bitsa and Ozenda enter the room. While Bitsa examines the mysterious glowing crystals, Ozenda reads the scroll.
Bitsa finds that the crystals are cool to the touch and can easily be dislodged from the wall with a dagger.
The scroll reads as follows:
After a long journey through the trackless wastes, five goblins discover a large cache of hobbit burritos guarded by a crow. Being tired, the goblins agree to sleep first and divide up the cache evenly in the morning. However, goblins are mistrustful creatures. During the night, one of the goblins wakes up, worried that his cohorts will try to diddle him out of his fair share. He creeps to the cache of burritos, gives one to the crow to keep it quiet, and divides the remaining pile into 5 exactly equal parts. He stashes his share in a secret location, reassembles the remaining four parts of the pile back into a single pile, and goes back to sleep. Later a second goblin wakes with the same worry, and in secret takes exactly the same steps, feeding one burrito to the crow to keep it quiet, dividing the pile into five equal parts, secreting away one part, and reassembling the remaining pile. One at a time, each of the remaining three goblins do exactly the same thing. In the morning, the goblins all wake and go to the pile. Though rather smaller than it was the previous night, no goblin wants to admit his own guilt. They give one burrito to the crow to keep it quiet, and divide the remainder of the pile exactly evenly among themselves. No hobbit burritos were cut into parts during any of these steps. The smallest possible initial number of hobbit burritos in the pile is the tumbler combination that will disengage the force-field.

Ozenda reads the scroll to the soft sound of steel scraping on rock. Bitsa has removed several of the glowing crystals and stacked them on the floor near his pack. "Bitsa? In your professional capacity were you in a position to divide spoils equally with a group?"
The hobb looks up from where he is currently removing a sixth crystal. With a final twist and pop it falls into his waiting hand. "Uh, well, thieves are stereotypically distrustful. Equal divisions usually meant they took whatever they could get away with or intimidate you out of. Why?"
Ozenda holds the scroll out to him. Bitsa places his latest acquisition in the pile with the others and crosses the room to accept the scroll. He peruses the contents for a moment and then looks up at the wizard. "Um... Is Salazar really off his rocker? Why would he leave a scroll with instructions on how to open the lock to take his treasure? Are you sure this thing isn't dusted with itching powder or won't suddenly turn into a shadowy manta ray and strangle you when you put it on?" He leans closer to the buzzing barrier and peers intently at the folds of cloth.
Ozenda heaves an uncharacteristic sigh, "No, I quite believe that this is simply His Insane Creepiness' idea of mockery. He does not believe anyone could best his sorcery even given the instructions to do so."
Bitsa studies the scroll a bit more then crosses to his pack and reaches into it's depths. He withdraws a small pouch and plucks out a stick of chalk. Looking at the scroll again he begins writing formula on the wall in the space he had removed the crystals from. Ozenda looks at the thief, baffled. "What are you doing?" She asks trying to decipher the series of equations the half-pint housebreaker has scribbled upon the dark surface.
"What? More than you expected from a simple thief?" Bitsa grins impishly, "Thieves Guild Cut-purse Extension Course. We were expected to work in teams and knowing how to divvy up the take evenly helped. I thought this problem looked familiar," he frowns a bit, "Disturbing to see how much thieves have in common with hungry goblins."
While Bitsa works on, Ozenda watches quietly in wonder. This one has hidden depths... The hobb erases half an equation and then rewrites it. "No, that doesn't work either," he mutters.
"You are having difficulty?" Ozenda asks.
"Yeah, I need to combine these equations but it's not making sense, I'm missing something."
Ozenda looks over Bitsa's scribblings and offers a suggestion, "What if you switch this sign here and multiply through by that variable?" While the stark equations on the dark wall lacked the symbology of the Clockwork Fractal's theoretical work there was an underlying similarity.
Bitsa makes the changes and writes out the new equation. "Ok, that looks like it'll work. So, now we solve for X, 'cause, you know, X marks the spot." He chuckles at his own humor and proceeds to suit action to words. Soon he arrives at an answer.
"Fifteen-thousand six-hundred twenty-one. Are you sure?" Asks Ozenda. "We may only get one chance at this."
"If you have a better idea, I'm willing to listen. At the moment, this is the best I have to offer."
Ozenda nods and walks back over to the cape-clad dressmakers dummy on a pedestal. She leans forward and slowly turns the five brass tumblers to read 1-5-6-2-1.

Ozenda carefully dials the digits into the tumbler lock. As the last digit slips into place, the force-field makes a loud POP and vanishes leaving the scent of ozone in the air.
The dressmaker's dummy seems to be just that - a perfectly ordinary object. However, to the eyes of Bitsa and Ozenda, the red cape shimmers with magical energy. Ozenda peers closely at it and sees that the silk is not woven in the normal way. The minute crossing strands seem to lay out an endlessly repeating pattern of runes and strange sigils. Ozenda recognizes a few of them as runes of protection, others as representing goodness, and still others as symbols of hope.
[Bookkeeping: Bitsa and Ozenda each take 100 general AP for beating the puzzle and acquiring the Cape of Good Hope.]

Ozenda reaches up and removes the cape from the dressmakers form. As she moves to swing the cape over her shoulders Bitsa stops her, "You sure that's safe?"
"Yes," the wizard points to the finely woven sigils, "See here and here? This means 'protection' and this is 'hope'. The runes repeat alongside another for 'goodness'. I cannot read all of them but I'm confident this artifact will be of assistance against such evil as Salazar." Ozenda raises an eyebrow, "Unless you want to wear it?" She holds the cape out to Bitsa.
The thief takes a step back, hands up before him, "No, you're the wizard, not I. You wear it. 'Sides, it'll look like a great cloak on me and have me stumbling all over... and red's not exactly inconspicuous." Bitsa turns back to the pile of glowing rocks next to his pack and begins loading them in. "We need to get back to Tenkar and the Titans and then hot foot it back to Owynn and Pan." Bitsa pauses for a moment, "Hope the dragon didn't eat them."
While Bitsa finishes storing his newly acquired stones in his pack Ozenda flips the cape over her shoulders with a touch of dramatic flair. She settles the cape and fastens it at her throat. "I like the fabric," she comments, "Though I could certainly do with a nice bath," the wizard laments peering at the coal dust coating her hands.
Bitsa finishes closing his pack, "Aonghasan was given a never ending shower artifact by the same odd elf that gave me this bottomless bag. It works quite well."
Ozenda's eyes light up at that, "I may have to borrow that when this is all over. Let us go find Tenkar and his company. With luck we may be able to regain the fortress with none the wiser."
The two comrades leave the treasure chamber-come-prison and return up the corridor to rejoin Tenkar and his company of Titans.

Bitsa and Ozenda emerge into the coal pits again. Tenkar and his Titans have spent some time looting the bodies of the numerous guards. Many of the miners now carry short swords in place of shovels.
Tenkar wipes his bloody hands on a rag of guard clothing and smiles at Bitsa. "Well, we're done cleanin' up here. Didja get yer magic whatsit?" He spies Ozenda wearing the red cape. "Oh, say. That's purdy. The fellers here tell me that there's more miners still a workin' on th' gold level what might want ta help us. An' our new recruits from th' coal pits here have asked me if we could remove their neck-rings please."
Tenkar turns away for a moment to answer a question from one of the Titans, then turns back. "Oh, yeh. There's still two fellers workin' in the winch-house a turnin' carts around. The trolls are still walkin' that big winch around, an' they's afraid if they stop, the carts'll all pile up on the trolls and get 'em right mad. Other than that, this level is cleaned out an' belongs ta us now."

Ozenda can't resist twirling in place at Tenkar's compliment, "I like the fabric and it's beautifully woven. I just wish I knew more about it." She holds a corner of the cape up for closer inspection, "I never did learn Mac's identification spell. Well, perhaps inspiration will strike."
Bitsa clasps arms with the Titan's commander, "Sounds like you have events well in hand." The thief release the dwarf and swings his pack off his shoulders. With deft fingers he has the knots undone and is rummaging about inside. "Here you go," he says withdrawing the collar control box, "It's still charged. Oh, if you're interested in glowing stones, there's a bunch of red ones in the walls of the secret room back there. Just don't let a lantern's light fall upon the door or you'll lock it closed." The hobb pauses with a thoughtful expression, "Come to think of it there's no reason we can't return the room to it's original purpose if we needed to." He looks around and see's no one but their allies, "Then again..."
Meanwhile, Ozenda supervises the release of Tenkar's new recruits. "Once we have all these good dwarves released we should free their compatriots in the gold mines." A concerned expression crosses her face, "Will there be any trouble releasing the two near the trolls? We don't want to tip our hand."
"Agreed," Bitsa snaps his fingers, "Oh, don't forget about those extra swords and such we hid back in tunnel four. I'm sure they can be put to better use than where they are now. As I recall, there was another set of orc armor back there too." He looks up at Ozenda and suggests, "You might want to grab that while we're here. There's an old saying in the Thieves Guild: No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife between the shoulder blades will seriously cramp his style. Best protect those shoulder blades."
"Orc? Truly? The odoriferous assault..." Ozenda sighs, "You are undoubtedly correct, sir thief, I needs must live to visit repayment upon Salazar for his hospitality. Orc armor it is." She brightens for a moment, "Perhaps the smell will be enough to render my opponents unconscious."
Bitsa smiles at her jest understanding it for the nervous banter it is. Once a few dwarves have fetched the various arms and armor he and Tenkar aid Ozenda in donning the orc armor. "Wait, are you sure this is a good idea?" she asks once she gets a whiff of the armor, "It did not help the previous owner."
"True," Bitsa replies, tightening a buckle, "But, you see, he was in front of us whereas you have us behind you. That makes all the difference."
Ozenda nods at Bitsa's quip and selects a short sword from amongst the pile of recycled weapons, "I wish it were my staff but this will have to do for now." She buckles it in place and puts the cape back on over her armor adjusting the hang of her sword, sax and cape to avoid entanglements. Placing her helm on, the begrimed wizard cuts quite the martial figure, at least in the flickering light of the tunnel. "Now, shall we go free some more dwarves?"

Once the coal miners are free of their neck-rings, Ozenda, Bitsa, Tenkar and the mighty Fightin' Titans walk away from tunnel four and back to the decline shaft.
As they emerge into the well-lit intersection, they see Owynn, Pan, Herman, Kweiraye, Father Grizzle, and eight other Titans come jogging toward them down the decline shaft.
"Seagal's not far behind us," Pan says. "And it looks like he's bringing all his forces with him."
Game time 4/4 21:10++
[GM comment: You have a total of 64 Titans now including Kweiraye, Father Grizzle, and the freed coal-miners. You also have Owynn, Tenkar, Bitsa, Ozenda, Pan, and Herman. Pan was able to see 10 orc guards, 4 goblin guards, 1 goblin commander, 2 ogres, plus Seagal, Hrruuukkk Ptui, and the Orc Captain. Presumably he was getting more goblins and ogres in quarters, and may be able to pick up the goblins and the orc guard from the gold-mining level. Out of game - this is every last mook in the place.]
Edit: And I've been ignoring Ozenda's WIZ again. She regains 2 more mana. Even without Omnipotent Eye, she could use 2 WIZ on Detect Magic and learn something about the cape's properties.
Edit: Oh yeah. And Herman is carrying a really nifty staff she might want to look at.

Bitsa greets his companions enthusiastically, happy to see they've survived the dragon. He claps Herman on the arm, "Glad to see you're still about, lad. Having fun yet? Owynn, Pan, still in one piece I see. Pan you didn't eat the dragon did you?"
Herman looks askance at the hobb, "Don't think we mean the same thing by 'fun'. I may drink for a week on that story alone but I don't think I'll sleep a wink in that week either." Herman suddenly remembers what he's holding, "Lady Ozenda," he asks, not quite so timidly as when they first entered the caverns was it only earlier this morning...? thinks Bitsa.
Ozenda turns from where she had been studying the hem of her cape, a thought nagging at the back of her mind. "Yes?" she acknowledges the butchers boy.
"Owynn said we had to give this to you," Herman holds out the long cloth wrapped bundle he carries. Relief floods the budding adventurers face as Ozenda relieves him of his burden. The wizard quickly strips off the cloth covering the staff and stares at its ebony surface enthralled. She runs her hands over the surface in a gentle caressing motion following the silver inlaid swirls to the jewels set in the top. "Ohhh, this is nice," she whispers.
As Herman and Ozenda study the staff, Bitsa is in conference with the other leaders. "We don't have much time. With Seagal on his way with his troops we need to act quickly. How about we barricade the north and south branches of the intersection with the ore carts. We can just unhook them here and stack them up to make a barrier. It should slow them down some and make them come at us in smaller numbers." Bitsa addresses Tenkar and Father Grizzle, "We could even put a couple of dwarves with shovels in the dump chute to play Whack-an-Orc if any try to climb up through the spillway." He looks around at the grim and weary faces, "Or we could just meet them here head on and let the Fates decide. Personally, I believe in helping the Fates come to the correct decision."
"That is what it was," Ozenda realizes. She cradles the staff in the crook of her left arm and pulls the hem of the cape around from her right. Ozenda holds the cloth between her hands and peers at it closely. It is magic and that I can see but what type of magic? Perhaps I can discern that and deduce a bit more... The wizards eyes narrow as she attempts to pierce the warp and weft of the fabric and understand the true nature of the artifact.
Ozenda powers up Detect Magic (two points) to try and get a better understanding of the nature of the cape.

As Ozenda handles the staff, she can feel and see the powerful magical aura around it. Her hands tingle when she holds it. Moments ago, she was feeling exhausted from her battle of will with the Coal Pit Demon, but now she feels refreshed and recharged.
As Mac taught her, she performs the stronger form of the spell to see magic on the cape. Somehow, the staff in her hand seems to aid her in this endeavor and she sees much about the properties of both the cape and the staff. [Private message]
Meanwhile, Tenkar and the Titans listen carefully to Bitsa's plan. "Er, yeh. Like what he said," Tenkar tells the Titans. "Get on it lads."
With so many willing hands, the work goes quickly. The Titans unhook dozens of the empty ore wagons off the great cable and begin stacking them in the intersection, blocking off the north and south main halls. For good measure, many of the slain orcs and goblins are added to the barricades, adding weight to the carts and horror to the appearance.
Two of the Titans head to the dump chute and wait, shovels ready.
Just as these preparations are complete, everyone can hear the marching footsteps of Seagal and his remaining forces. From behind the barricades, Bitsa can hear the cursing of Seagal as he sees the defensive measures in place and realizes that his worst fears are true - there is a powerful group of invaders in the mines, and they are ready to throw down.
Pan runs to the dump-chute tunnel and addresses the two Titans there. "They're here. Quickly now. Grab my legs and dangle me through the dump-hole!" The miners look at each other quizzically, but do as he says.
Hanging upside down in the hole, Pan can clearly see the group led by Seagal. Heh. They look like they're all standing on the ceiling! Pan thinks to himself. He overcomes his amusement long enough to do a quick headcount as Seagal, Hrruuukkk Ptui, and the orc captain have a quick whispered conference to plan battle strategy. "Okay. That's enough lads, pull me up."
Pan runs back to where Tenkar, Owynn, Bitsa, and Ozenda are standing. "Can't be sure I counted 'em all, but I think I saw eleven orc guards, ten gobbies, and four ogres. And then there's Seagal, Hrruuukkk Ptui, and that big orc captain there."
There is a tense moment of silence, then Seagal walks forward toward the intersection and delivers an ultimatum.
"Intruders! I know not how you came to be here, and I don't care. But you have trapped yourselves in a dead end. Surrender now and our Lord Salazar will show you his mercy. Resist, and face your doom. The choice is yours. I will give you five minutes to decide."
With this, Seagal walks back to his forces in the decline shaft. There is more whispered discussion. The delvers can hear a single set of footsteps racing up the decline shaft toward the fortress.

Owynn brings out his sword and makes himself ready for battle. Hearing the stern warning of Seagal, and the sound following it he approaches Bitsa. "Bitsa, someone is probably going to warn a higher authority of what is happening here. It is probable that Salazar is back!" His eyes flash with fear and excitement at the same time.
