Seeing Herman and Pan rush in where angels fear to tread, Kweiraye grabs his pickaxe and does what he must - help them. Dodging a lashing tail, he gets close to the dragon's flank and swings at the scaly hide. "You big brute! I'm going to pick your eyes! I'm going to pick your nose!"

Father Grizzle listens to the exchange between Owynn and the dragon with his ear pressed to the door. "How's it goin' in there?" one of the dwarves whispers. "Nicht sae good. Ae think th' wee lizard's onta his blither," Grizzle replies. Then the words "REAP THE WHILRWIND!!" sound loud and clear through the door.
"That's our cue lads. Let's go."
The squad of miners crashes through the heavy double doors and rush toward the dragon with dwarvish curses.
Owynn is shocked by the sudden reaction of the dragon. He falls back, and his back hurts the wall near the entrance door. Where could he have done a mistake? His little scam was going so well for a while... Maybe the untimely blink in the course of the last sentence made the whole speech fall apart?
The door next to him opens abruptly next to him, surprising him in the process. Slightly unbalanced, a few of the items he was carrying fall down, starting with a vial full of diamond-shaped pills. He remembers where he found it, and is still unsure of its real use.
At the same time, he sees the little Kweiraye run to his doom, the big red monster opening his mouth in an evil grin, probably a prelude to spit out a torrent of fire. As he sees it, even the incoming reinforcement will not arrive in time to save him from the flames.
Looking again at the vial, the warrior thinks in a pinch: "Okay, let's find out." Fumbling back on his feet as fast as he can, he shouts: "Hey, big guy, try to eat that instead!"
And he hurls the vial toward the lizard's mouth as fast as he can.

When the dragon roars at Kweiraye, Owynn hurls the vial of mysterious tablets. The vial tumbles end over end through the air and goes straight into the dragon's gullet, cutting the deafening roar short with a gasp and a choke.
While the dragon is distracted by his attempt to swallow down the vial, Kweiraye makes good on his threat and lands a blow with his pickaxe right on the dragon's snout (2 spite). Pan dodges a swiping claw and also manages to hit the dragon on a forelimb with his scimitar, dislodging a few scales and drawing some blood (2 spite).
Herman cracks his whip threateningly but ineffectually at the dragon's head, and Father Grizzle and the other miners rush in but are only able to do minor (heh heh) damage to the dragon as they attempt to dodge his lashing tail. One of the dwarves gets knocked across the room and slammed into the wall by the tip of the tail. (Dragon deals 2 spite to miners, Miners deal 1 spite to Dragon.).
The combatants jockey for position to find a place to hit the dragon without being crushed, eaten, clawed, or battered by a tail. The dragon swallows painfully then rears up. Everyone can see the veins in his leathery wings engorge with blood as they begin to extend straight outwards. His enormous wingspan nearly fills the room and the dragon begins to have some trouble turning from side to side to engage his foes.
"Ahh. It's almost painful, but I feel like I could do this all night!" the dragon says.
[GM comment: The blue pills actually added 10 to the dragon's MR which was originally 250. He took 5 spite damage, so adding the 10 puts him at 255 and this will effectively be his hit points. However, his turgid wings are going to penalize his attack since they limit his movement. He will roll all 26 dice to attack, but get only half of his normal calculated adds for the rest of the combat. This round it would be 26d6+64.]

A smirk on his mouth at the sight of the dragon's position, Owynn thinks it's time to settle for more mundane fighting techniques. He wears his shield, unsheathes his sword and jumps into melee next to his friend Pan'.
While attempting to land a decisive blow between his foe's scales, he says to the satyr: "Hey why don't you try to attack him from behind?"

Pan shoots Owynn a look. Briefly, he considers whether the statement was a slam against his heritage, but shakes it off as coincidence. Pan leaps clear of another slashing claw and attempts to flank the giant creature, slicing hard at one of the extended wings as he runs toward the lashing tail.
Father Grizzle and the other dwarves begin to do real damage with their picks and the dragon seems unable to deal with all of the attackers at once. Herman continues to snap ineffectually with the whip, but the cracks near the dragon's head keep distracting it from biting at other targets. Annoyed by the dwarf swinging a pick at his face, the dragon sweeps his mighty head from right to left, sending Kweiraye tumbling across the floor.
As this occurs, Owynn is able to step in front of the dragon and stab through the scales and deep into dragon flesh. The dragon roars again, but this time in pain. Sizzling hot blood begins to flow from numerous wounds making the floor slick and treacherous.
Team delver does 85 damage after armor plus 3 spite. The Dragon does 3 spite damage to Kweiraye.

Once again, Owynn finds an opening in the dragon's defences and continues to make deep stabs into the chest and neck of the beast with his broadsword. Pan finds a spot near the tail and drives the trident in deep with another battle cry. The dragon roars again in pain and attempts to turn and bite at the satyr. But his fully extended wings keep him from moving as deftly as he would wish and he only ends up knocking the warrior over with his massive tail.
As the miners continue to hack diligently away at the dragon's flanks, Herman steps in closer and lashes the whip, hitting the dragon in the eye. "Adventurers have never beaten me yet, and they won't now! Get ready to barbecue!!" With one eye squinched shut, the dragon inhales deeply, readying his fire breath.
(Pan takes 2 spite damage, the dragon takes 129 damage plus 9 spite)

The dragon arches his neck and lets loose a blast of flame directly at the crouching Owynn. Pan hears Owynn's cry and dashes from the rear flank of the dragon around to the front. He dives in front of Owynn just as the jet of fire hits.
"Ahh. Toasty." Pan says as the blast of flame washes over him. Owynn can feel his shield and armor getting hot, but most of the fire does not reach him. He can smell burning hair and realizes that it is his own hair and beard being singed from the heat.
Clearly in his death throes, the dragon begins to lash even more violently with his tail and rear legs at the miners attacking his flanks. Through the roar of fire, Owynn can faintly hear the whistle and crack of Herman's whip. With a thundering crash, the dragon topples over, his bleeding head right next to Owynn. "End it now, adventurer. End my suffering." he whispers to the warrior.
[Bookkeeping: Owynn takes 1 spite damage, Pan loses 10% of his armor value, though he is unharmed (fireproof). Owynn takes 300 general AP for defeating the dragon and acquiring the staff. Herman and Pan each take 100 general AP. Miners take 5 spite from dragon's final throes.]

Reacting to the dragon's demand, Owynn raises the sword of Tallinoor and plunges it into the skull of the giant monster. When he exhales his last breath, the warrior comments: "See where your lack of faith led you?" Deep inside, he is more than a little proud to finally have achieved a great deed in this quest!
Then he turns to his friends: "Try to see what interesting items you can get from this place. Make it quick, the commotion here might have alerted someone." At last, he moves quickly to where the magic wand lies. He goes about inspecting it, all the while thinking: "How the hell does it work?"

Owynn drives the sword deep into the dragon's head and the golden light from his one good eye goes dark. There is a final great twitch and shudder, then dragon goes completely still.
Herman begins to rummage through the pile of gold and silver coins under the body of the dragon. "There must be, like, thousands in gold here!" he says in awe. Father Grizzle and the other miners each stuff as much gold into their pouches and pockets as they can carry, but it does little to diminish the heap.
After a time of blissful rummaging through the coins and feeling the heavy gold trickle through his fingers, Herman returns to Owynn with some items of interest. "I found these, sir." He has a small crystal vial with some sort of potion in it, a piece of granite worn smooth on one side and sharply fractured on the other, and an elaborate dagger with gems set in its hilt. "There were also a bunch of gems in among the gold, but I think we'll have to wait until later to carry it all out."
Owynn picks up the staff. It is just short of two meters in length and Owynn can feel a tingle in his arm and hand when he grabs it. He swooshes it around experimentally, but nothing happens. Pan sees him and says, "Best to leave messing with that for Ozenda or Aonghasan, Owynn. You might blow us all to kingdom come!"
"Right you are, my good friend! Better wrap it so that it is not made too obvious what it is, and go meet Ozenda as fast as we can." Owynn gets the first piece of cloth available around him, and conceals the wand inside it. Then he looks at the small posse gathered in the room with a critical eye. "Guys, I know it is very tempting for you to take the whole loot right now, but there are still a lot of enemies to dispose off around. We could use some more discretion for the time being. I'm sure there will be plenty of time to bath into mountains of gold and fill up entire chests with jewelery, but let's try to stay light for now."
After making sure his mates do not carry a too heavy or encumbering load, the warrior then leaves the wand to Herman, goes to the door with Pan' at his side and listens for any suspect noise before opening it.

Owynn listens at the door, but hears no noise outside. Peering out into the hallway, it seems deserted as before. Herman carries the staff gingerly - as though afraid it will bite him. Kweiraye, Father Grizzle, Pan, and the other miners each grab a few handsful of gold and stand behind Owynn.
"Where are all the guards, I wonder?" Pan asks. To the north, Owynn can still see the door of the miners quarters, and to the east he can see three more short tunnels leading to doorways. The easternmost, he knows, leads to the quarters of Hrruuukkk Ptui.
