.... is that they need to be jazzed up and given some flavor. And not just the kind of flavor that has them saying "rarrg" n' stuff all the time.
Trolls should be the most interesting monster in the game, just for the sake of being eponymous if nothing else.
i found it almost bizarre that one of the most uninspired entries in the 7.5 monster books was: the troll. the illustration was boring and bad, the descriptor for the monster was bad ( unless you are trying to mimic a Dungeons and Dragons game with a TnT ruleset, I don't see why trolls should regenerate.... the folklore doesn't generally bear this ability out).....
Shouldn't the troll be a serious piece of cool? have something going on other than a high MR and the ability to regenerate it?
possible troll subtypes?
MR: wide ranging, but 40 minimum..... and that would be on a withered old troll hag who is ready to die of natural causes.... I'm thinking for the gray troll an average of about 150
special: 3/ trollish smackdown 4/ Epic flyswat
the long armed, knuckle dragging beast has caught the nearest opponent by the ankles in one of his long fingered extremely powerful hands. the troll proceeds to beat the character against the ground repeatededly, as though they were a living club. This does an additional 4d6 to that individuals CON. the individual can elect to have armor absorbb some or all of those points... but due to the brutality of the impact, and the way trolls instinctively know how to crack armor, the armor will permanently loose its ability to protect by that number of points. Magical armor will be reduced at HALF this rate.
epic flyswat- can be performed at the same time as trollish smackdown, but this will be in the form of a nasty backhand from the OTHER arm, which will send the delver 1d6x10 +10 feet. Delver will suffer 3d6 impact damage and has too make Dex check to hang on to any gear in his hand.
Trolls used to be the strongest and most prolific of all races... and in an older, lonlier time they controlled the untamed wastes above and all the spaces below. they carved fortresses, had artisans, knew magic.
the world no longer belongs to the trolls and they resent it. All other creatures are clearly inferior..... but they breed like rabbits and have the advantage of numbers. they are best exterminated, but if this is not possible, a good troll should try to find a way to prey on these creatures some other way.
