Reading a thread on rpg net brought this suggestion from jagga spikes which I thought was really elegant
For attribute generation
'Roll (6+2d6). write down. subtract from 26. write down. repeat two more times. this gives six balanced random numbers in 8-18 range with average being 13, regardless of how many time it's rolled. fixed/subtract part can be tinkered with to provide lower or higher range. for example, (3d6) and subtract from 21 to get classic D&D range.'
The GM decides the power range for character generation, each character will have the same overall point value, but the dice have distributed the values.
I pronounce it an elegant and clever device that I wish i had thought of.

I'm a '3d6 in order' kind-of-a-guy but I like cunning formulae. Well done that man.
