Big fan of the books. I have the complete set with the Frank Frazetta covers. These lurid, pulpy stories were hugely influential on me as a teenager. To this day, I still prefers authors from the same generation as ERB.
I am getting ready for a local con in October, and a lot of folks asked me to run a Pathfinder one-shot. I'm sketching it out now, but it will be set on Barsoom and involve rescuing Dejah Thoris from Xaxa and the Mastermind of Mars.
Still looking for "Banth" in the Pathfinder Bestiary. Oh, wait. It's right here under "Lion, Dire."

Tharks! there must be Tharks aplenty! ...Yes Tars Tarkus was my favorite character.......and Woola. ;D So Mike will there be Radium rifles with radar sighting? I'm sure the players wouldn't abuse them!

Without having read the books - I still need to - I thought the movie was great!

The movie was fun and the Tharks were done better than I expected, especially Sola. Unfortunately I felt that they made John Carter a little too whiny and probably a bit too young. In the books he's almost some kind of "Highlander" even on earth. He can't remember when he was born and is far older than he appears. Also they cut out all the psionic powers and telepathy from the movie, most likely for time constraint reasons. Making the Therns into a planet hopping race of scavengers was interesting but alien to the source material. At least they got a good match for Deja Thoris and Cantos Caan, oh and they tried to explain how Woola always seemed to be able to keep up with John Carter by giving him super-speed. Although Woola is described a bit more crocodilian and not so cuddly in the books, its a pity we'll likely never see a sequel now that Disney has its hands on the Star Wars franchise.

Now that makes me REALLY want to search out the books. I fear you're correct about a sequel.

Now that makes me REALLY want to search out the books. You may want to try Gutenberg.org. They have a large number of books from Edgar Rice Burroughs. Here's the Barsoom series order from Wikipedia.

One of my early memories is getting called out for reading Thuvia Maid of Mars under the desk at school. Reprimanded, told to get on with the lesson and henceforth concentrate on something less lurid.
As I recall, we were learning about Henry VIII's love life at the time 🤔

Kaor! Been a big fan since I first started reading the stories (Doubleday editions with Frazetta's B/W art) in late high school. Love them immensely, and will have to re-re-read them again before my eyesight fails me. Every time I would read them I would first play the movement "Mars" from Holst's Planets (a must, really, to set the mood properly).

When it comes to the movies though, it has to be Doug McClure at the earth's core for me.

The link just takes me to Disney's front page - should I be seeing something about John Carter of Mars?

The link just takes me to Disney's front page - should I be seeing something about John Carter of Mars? It's an old thread. I reactivated it by posting a link to a quickie sale on DriveThru for the Modiphius John Carter game. Apologies. In my zeal to keep the thread uncluttered, I deleted the post once the sale was over, leading to your confusion. Sorry.

It sent me down a rabbit hole looking for a John Carter of Mars RPG and now I'm thinking of writing a T&T version
