7e has an ostensibly simple rule for level - your level is your highest class relevant stat, divided by 10. There are various (and varying) benefits for advancing level. There is also the question of what happens to your level when your stats change on a temporary basis, which can cause a headache. It also accentuates the differing power level for starting characters.
For those who are interested in a slightly different approach I present Power Level
Xp that you acquire can be spent on individual attributes at the usual rate of 10 x the existing attribute.
To increase your Power Level, you must spend 500 x your current Power Level. To qualify to purchase the next Power Level your highest class relevant attribute must be at least 10 x the new Power level (so for Power Level 2, your attribute must be at least 20).
Once a Power Level is purchased it is never lost. It reflects the characters prowess and respect within the world.
The following benefits are granted upon reaching a new level
1) You gain a new talent
2) You add your Power Level to all Saving Roll attempts
3) You gain benefits according to your class.
Warriors - Add their Power Level to all Combat totals they roll.
Rogues - May cast spells of the new level without the penalty to Wiz cost for casting spells of a higher level
Wizards - May purchase and cast spells of the new level without the penalty to Wiz cost for casting spells of a higher level. The cost of all spells is reduced by the Power level when a Magic Focus is used. The cost of casting lower level spells is reduced by the difference between Power Level and the Level of the Spell.
Paragons - May cast spells of the new level without the penalty to Wiz cost for casting spells of a higher level. The cost of all spells is reduced by the Power level when a Magic Focus is used.
Specialist Wizards - Learn all spells of their speciality at the level equal to their Power Level.
