I just played Dangers of Bakemono Forest, by Brian Penn, the solo adventure in Elder Tunnels Spring 2012.
I liked the rest of that issue of Elder Tunnels too, which I found quite interesting (beautiful layout, BTW, who did it?), but that solo is really the pièce de résistance, here.
What makes it particularly interesting is the setting. Brian created an entire peninsula, the Empire of Sonan Ie, in the Southern foot of the Dragon continent. I happen to have both a map and an essay about this part of Trollworld, which Bear sent me with Brian's permission. The map you will find in Elder Tunnels, however, which shows only a part of Sonan Ie, is nearly illegible (the original must have been in colors, computer-made - zoomed and in B&W, it becomes quite bad I must say, but still useable).
That rich background makes story-telling easier for brian (and, yes Khay'haik, you're quite right, the story's the thing) and enhaced my whole gaming experience. I think creating a GM adventure based on that solo shouldn't be too difficult. Nicely done, Brian!
The only snag is that my character died...
Before playing, I had taken a quick look at the book, and had noticed a frame that says that you may bring an existing character into that adventure, with up to 10 adds and 4 dice (clearly, that text should have been inserted in the introduction, even if I kind of like those frames).
Well, let me give you a piece of advice: break that rule! ;D
The character I brought in had 4D5 + 12 (a rogue) and she died.
1) Most of the SRs I had to make were 3rd to 5th level!
2) I met monsters with an MR between 30 (with special powers) and 80.
But maybe I was very unlucky?
Anyway, next time, I'll bring a second level character
