With Dan leaving, I'm creating this thread as a place for potential volunteers, questions, etc.

And, apart from the crickets, the only sound is the whispering patter of everyone tiptoeing away. :-D

And, apart from the crickets, the only sound is the whispering patter of everyone tiptoeing away. :-D (I wrote and deleted about a dozen more relevant responses finding them too easily misinterpreted so I'll go with something even less of value). No surprise, but with apologizes to the green muppet with old man's hairy ears, There is try.

I'm flattered, but I'm already pretending to work on too many other things. The only reason you could hear everyone else tiptoeing is that I had already run away, screaming, long before. :-) More seriously, there'll probably be some excitement whenever Deluxe finally shows up. I bet someone will step up then, if not sooner.

I'd volunteer, but:
1) I'd do a lousy job. And I'm not kidding when I say that. 2) That assumes that I wouldn't just drop the ball entirely. Which, with the way that my life goes these days, is pretty much guaranteed...
So as much as I'd like the "Glory and Prestige"TM*, I'm not throwing my hat into the ring.
* Actually, it's more a case of "As much as I'd like to contribute more to the community". I've never been too concerned with Glory and PrestigeTM, really.

I'm also way too busy to tackle something like this. But I was wondering if any of the former editors might want to summarize here on this thread what's involved with the position. It might help demystify it for folks and make it feel more doable. I'm always up for doing volunteer illustration for upcoming issues of Trollzine!

Thats a really good idea.
I was supremely lucky to have Kevin Bracey (Quogmyre on here) doing the formatting, typesetting and turning the materials into the useable document for Trollszines one to three. It was an absolutely 50/50 partnership. Dan Hembree I think did all of that as well as the job I did.You need both.
What I did was encourage submissions, review the submissions and copy edit them (including dialogue over the content where things might be unclear or if games/rules content was missing). I also spent a lot of time hunting for artwork. It was far easier to get written submissions than it was appropriate artwork. I was very lucky with the artists who willingly offered up work, with some going so far as to purpose create art for articles. David Ullery ,Jeff Freels, Al Cook, Kevin Bracey and Chad Thorson did some great bespoke art, which was a great feeling for me and the writers,(and hopefully pretty darn good for the readers as well). There was a lot of concern about people being ripped off after a certain scandal, so we out in place the agreements and disclaimers regarding ownership and use of the material (i.e. it belongs to the creators - we have a one time permission to publish it in Trollszine)
I also had a number of other wonderful Bridge Trolls who helped with the copy editing.
Once I had the written work and the artwork I had to work out the order, and which art went with which articles (even non bespoke art would fit some better than others). I then digitally dispatched all that to Kevin, who transformed it into the work you can still download for free. Once he had put it together, i circulated it to contributors and sub editors for a final check, and then uploaded it to RPG NOW for inclusion on their site.
Different people have different skills - I would say my main contribution was in encouraging submissions and publicising the zine. My eye for errors/typos is not as close or exacting as others, and I think Dan Hembree was a brilliant editor of the zine, with a proven track record in his great solo adventures.
I burned out after 3 issues. It does take time, energy and enthusiasm to make it happen, and I am even busier now in my life than I was then. I am still very proud of it, and was really glad to be able to showcase the very talented contributors from the Trollbridge.

Thanks Zanshin! That's really helpful. Good summary and it's interesting to note that although layout skills are very helpful, they don't seem to be absolutely necessary if that need can be covered by another volunteer. It seems like a bunch of people have been consistently chipping in with copy editing help for some time. And there has been a good track record of illustrators volunteering. I think with the last issue there were a number of illustrators that did work by request specifically tailored for articles and I am sure that can continue. Thank you for your work on the first 3 issues and to Dan and the others that have been involved with editing of Trollzine!

Dear friends,
Like Zanshin, I am lot busier than I was in 2010 and 2011 when I was most active on the forum—we're expecting a new baby in December! But I'm willing to volunteer as editor for one issue, perhaps for release in Spring 2015.
I realize that the emeritus editors will be tough to follow, but I have a few ideas for the zine that I'd like to pitch to the right authors.
warmest regards!

I think that is excellent news. I wholeheartedly applaud gaptooth stepping up to the plate and will give him all the help I can. Bravo.

The baby will be one week late, after that your feet won't touch the ground for six months. Prediction over. Is this your first?

I'd be very happy to see Gaptooth take this on! (An issue of TrollsZine!, not the new baby, that is. The new baby is also good news though.)
