Hi, everyone.
What system, if any, do you use to determine how much a wizard-for-hire charges to throw a spell? Is there a simple formula based on spell-level or WIZ-cost (I'm playing 7th).
For example, in our party one character got turned to stone. How much would the other members have to pay to get a wizard to Pygmalion the poor guy back to flesh?
Thanks

It would cost 250 gp per spell level to buy a magic item that could be used one time only to cast Pygmalion. Since Pygmalion is level 9, that would cost 2250 gp. Add to that the cost of the item that is to be enchanted. If you carry the stone character to the wizard and the wizard casts the spell directly on the character, then it would just be the 2250 gp.
Of course, it depends on the economy of your game world as to whether the party might be able to find someone willing to cast the spell for cheaper. Competition could drive the price down. But that gives you an idea of what Ken expected the price of magic to cost in Trollworld.

BTW, I'm basing my above statements on the info in the back of the Monsters & Magic Book, which discusses the price of magic items.

Thanks, Khaydhaik. That's perfect. I guess that character (mine ) will be stone for a while, yet. Lawson

This is why it also helps to get on the good side of NPC wizards in the campaign. Do some jobs for them, and they might offer discounted magic services in the future.
This is assuming that the GM allows such a thing, of course.

Lionrampant, that's an excellent point. The GM might see this as an opportunity. The wizard might cast Pygmalion as an even trade for the PCs first performing a desired service for the wizard. The desired service could involve some special scenario that the GM would really like to run, but the players have so far avoided.

I would hate to be the delver responsible for dragging a "stoned" companion out of the dungeon.
A Wizard-for-Hire in 5e would be a relatively inexpensive 2 gold × sum of attributes plus equipement. I would expect the players to hammer out the details in the employment contract. Perhaps the Wizard is hired soley for medical aid? Then other spells are cast solely at the Wizard's discretion (and not compensated). of course hiring a combat mage may be helpful to soften up a particularly nasty dungeon.
My players rarely think to hire local talent to help with the adventure.

But that gives you an idea of what Ken expected the price of magic to cost in Trollworld. Depending on my mood, I might allow a price reduction for a direct casting, on the grounds that the convenience of having a portable item (rather than carting the stoned character in to town) accounts for a part of the standard item price. But I'd have to be in a good mood...
