WIZ not useful for warriors? I see a lot of space for house rules here!
Indeed! In my eyes, WIZ is not only a force that you use to cast spells. It is also the measure of your mental strength. For example, it can be used in combat against spirits. See Stefan Jones' Dark Temple solo section about "mental combat and battles of will". In Dark Temple, there is talk of a mental constitution, called "mental integrity" (equal to the average of Luck and Intelligence). Simply use WIZ as will/mental integrity, and you will see that can be very useful in any T&T game (you don't have to play Call of Cthuluh to need mental integrity).
When I started playing T&T, the implication of STR-fueled magic making dwarfs the best Wizards made a big impression on me. It made me say "this is not like other fantasy games". My first major NPC villain was a dwarf Wizard named Alberich.

I'm using 5th edition rules, so I don't have the rules for the Wiz attribute, and while I like the notion of spell casting causing physical fatigue I can see the advantage of not having every wizard morph into a hyper-steroidal strong man just so they can power their spells. So I'm planning to use Wiz to make the transition to DT&T easier when it becomes available. Is there any consequence when a Wiz score is reduced to zero? Do characters lose consciousness or die as they would when Str is depleted?
Gap tooth Sez..."It might be too simplistic for some tastes, but one could ditch WIZ for all Types and use STR to power magic."
Clever! Now why didn't we think of that before...
(skims copy of 4th Edition)
On a more serious note though, I can see the issue-ST isn't a dump stat for a Wizard under the new rules because he can still use it to modify his/her Combat Adds, perform ST SRs etc...so why should WZ be a dump stat for Warriors? I can't think of any WZ SRs right now since it is mostly a 'fuel' stat, so let's give WZ some things it can do:
The Counterspell-all Types can Counterspell as a defensive action by spending 1 or more WZ...every point so spent lessens the effect of a spell on that target only. This simulates powerful Warriors 'powering through' foul Sorcery through Sheer Will like Conan or Kull while still forcing them to be wary of high-WZ Wizardly Types. In addition, spells like TTYF can now affect MR-rated creatures and PCs in a similar fashion instead of merely hurting a decent MR-rated beast while murdering a standard CN-rated PC (The MR-rated NPC is assumed to be resisting magic just like the PC now and the effects of TTYF are now more identical in effect on both).
My Love Is Like A Truck!-when a Warrior Berserks, he/she does not spend ST, but WZ...not losing ST means that Berserkers become even fiercer, attacking undaunted until low WZ renders one unconscious or dead...FEAR THE BERSERK!
Behold the Power of my Kung Fu!-Did the PC fail a Save? Spend some WZ on a point for point basis and make that SR! Need a higher Combat Total this round? Pull at that inner Chi and FALCON PUNCH that Balrog through the wall! Wizards and Rogues can do it too, but tend to save WZ for Spells instead. If this sounds too powerful, make Techniques or Katas available to all Types, each with various Ability minimums just like Spells! Now Herve the Sorcerer has a full book of Lvl 1 Spells, Norgil the Hand has Iron Fist (IQ 8, ST 10) that lets him burn WZ to all Unarmed Combat results and any attempts to break things, and Annele the Rogue (having saved the life of a Wizard and befriended a wandering Master) has learned both Vorpal Blade and the Wallrunner kata (ST 10, DX 12, burn WZ to add to athletic and acrobatic SRs).
Demon Items-intelligent magic items as potent as any Deluxe Staff, and equally lacking in any form of WZ...oh look, here comes a walking battery RIGHT NOW! Surely this Warrior will accept a partnership, the offer of vast power in exchange for aiding the Item with its own goals in the process? An unbreakable blade that can go Vorpal for 1D rounds for the same in WZ? A Gonne that casts TTYF at its OWN IQ, or Blasting Power at its OWN Level? Just need some of your Precious WZ dear pet, you can make more...Demon-iron boots that let you run across air at only 1 WZ per round? such a bargain...
Ritual Magic-Is your Warrior a Team Player? let the Wizard make a few tiny cuts in your skin, mingle your blood with hers in the silver chalice, and lend your Soul's might to the spell that banishes the Demon Nyathalopermappighast back to the Hell of Boiling Oil! She really couldn't have done it without you...
I think WZ is a Dump stat for Warriors-so for those of you not still playing an earlier Edition...let's make it NOT a dump stat!
