Some time ago I downloaded a copy of the OSR/White Box clone game The Heroes Journey by Barrel Rider Games. I ran across a review of the game from the Save Or Die podcast and it inspired me to dig up the game out of my treasure pile, dust it off, and give it a closer look. I'm SO glad I did. At first glance, it is a beautifully done game with wonderful formatting and art (with Larry Elmore art in it no less). But equally cool to me is the persistent theme through out the book of the characters being heroes and champions of good. This plays out even in the minutest game mechanics as well as the narrative of the game. I'm a sucker for high fantasy and prevalent good vs evil themes. I would love to play in a THJ game and/or campaign. And I think I will be mining it for good stuff to infuse into T&T. For example, I love the simple yet elegant descriptions of the standard races (i.e. Dwarf, Elf, Hobbit, Human) and the trade background that includes starting money and equipment is a nice touch that can really help to fill in a characters background. And what is truly amazing is that I believe the pdf of the game is still being offered for "pay what you want". If you have the game already, what do you think of it? If you don't, I do recommend it (at the very least as a source of inspiration). It's certainly right on the price!
