Lazarus take hold of the rope and puts his meager strength to use.

"Before we do this Sahib's shouldn't we look to the long term?". "Yes we can lower a few of us down, but then what? Two parties? One down in the depths and the other up here?"
"Has anyone taken a good look to see if we can tie off the rope's up here and if we can, can we all make our way down the rope hand over hand?". "I still say we should look around and see if an easier way is available to us to enter".

"There surely must be something we can tie one end of the rope to... Let's look for a good, stout branch longer than the ingress." Funbunkle's eyes dart about urgently.

Iulius steels himself and he’s ready to descend.

Looking around Funbunkle recalls an old dried up but sturdy tree trunk [that was perhaps used to tether the horses], but closer still are the large stones set into the ground making up the ring around the altar...

Lorendiac nods at Dumfis in agreement. "The gentleman is right, this feels like quite the risk." The elf begins to scour the area both in and out of the ring to ascertain whether there are any other entrances.

'Lazarus thinks we're wasting time here,' says Lazarus. 'How long before the skellingtons come back?'

Looking around the area, Lorendiac and Dumfis find but more mounds of dirt, some dried up trees, and beyond that, the seemingly endless expanse of tundra...
[OCC: The only clear entrance is the altar.]

"Yes Dumfis, I agree we should perhaps tie the rope off up here so we can all slide down quickly but knowing we have enough rope to get to the bottom safely is , to my mind an even more pressing issue. Perhaps we should try to get Iulius down with some alacrity and then once we have established he's on solid ground, we can then get the rest of us down?"
[OOC: While the engine room lowers Iulius, Lorendiac could perhaps be tying the rope off?]

"A sound decision as this does seem to be the only way in". "One would hope we can find an easier way out if laden with loot". Dumfis adds with a smile. "Yes let us get Iulius down so he can see just how things stand at the bottom or even if we can reach the bottom". Say that Dumfis will help with the line.

“No risk, no reward! All set, men? Then, let’s go before I lose my nerve!” says Iulius.

As Iulius is lowered (with torch in hand), he passes by the described painted "door", and braces as he passes beyond the now-torn false canvas floor... Passing yet more and more smooth stone, awaiting what's to come... the shaft eventually opens up into a large stone room. Just below his feet are several large crude stone spikes, but they are large enough to easily avoid and move between. Just as the rope begins to stop due to length, Iulius finds he is now just a hop away from the real stone floor beneath his feet... The room's ceiling must be 20 feet high. The floor has a thick layer of dust, and cobwebs clog the upper corners. The room is littered with the remains of previous adventurers, presumably those who fell from above and did not have the time to avoid the large spikes on the way down; maggot ridden corpses in rotting armor are strewn about in various horrible positions. The walls also appear to be painted with some primitive frescoes, depicting images, which would require closer inspection. With the limited reach of the torch light, Iulius can just make out a door set in each of the four walls of the room... [OOC: What does Iulius do next?]

Still hanging from the rope, Iulius takes care to study as much of the chamber as he can. He hesitates to call to the party above in fear of rousing any habitants of this strange place.
He decides to detach himself from the rope as he deems the floor to be solid. He tugs on the rope the requisite number of times to signal that he is ok and in no need of being pulled back up. He cautiously examines his immediate surroundings, being careful not to touch anything yet. He is unsure of whether or not he should request another member of the party come join him yet.
[OOC: just want to check around a bit and make sure there aren’t any critters or creatures around]

"Either he's been eaten or he's gallivanting," Funbunkle observes. "I suppose we had better count to 500 and if he hasn't let us know what he's found then we can assume no news is very bad news."

"We could always toss a small rock down to let him know we're waiting". "He had a helmet on, right?"
