A piece of good news: www.sjgames.com/ill/archive/2017-12-26It remains to be seen where it goes from here, but from skimming some of the discussion on the SJGames forum, it seems possible that there may be both a re-release of the originals and an updated version. Time will tell, but it's nice to see that something long gone has the potential to reach a new generation of fans.

Interesting post mahrundl, I wonder if anyone on the Trollbridge ever played this game back in the 1980s (?) or indeed still has the game books?

I have never played it, but I've read about the game's distinctions and its seminal influence on the creation of the Sorcerer RPG.
I understand that TFT's magic was very similar to classic Tunnels & Trolls. Does anyone know whether Steve Jackson ever credited T&T for inspiration?

Not sure if T & T was ever credited as an inspiration. TFT is a bit of a departure from a lot of the other early games, having only ST, IQ, and DX as attributes, and ST was your hit point / CON attribute as well as fatigue and overall strength. It's the direct precursor to GURPS, if that helps, but quite a lot more minimal. However, the company that produced TFT, Metagaming, were also responsible for the production of Monsters! Monsters! for Flying Buffalo, and since Steve Jackson was part of Metagaming, he would almost certainly have known about T & T.

...since Steve Jackson was part of Metagaming, he would almost certainly have known about T & T. He did: Steve Jackson edited Monsters! Monsters! and gets a mention from Liz Danforth in the editor's afterword of fifth edition T&T.

I'm fairly sure that he credited T&T in relation to GURPS (mainly the simplicity and appeal to solo gamers) but much of my stuff is in storage and I can't find the reference; there's nothing in the designer's notes for Man to Man ( Space Gamer issue 76) although that article does include a brief comparison of TFT and GURPS. If you fancy using any TFT material with T&T then there was an article by Tom Riley in issue 71 of Space Gamer magazine (available to buy in PDF) on converting characters between the systems.

A quick search for The Fantasy Trip using Bing directed me to some links to the rules in PDF. I played it a tiny bit back in the day. It clearly still has some love for it going on.

Whether T&T had any influence on TFT or not, the GURPS books (1st-3rd Editions) made fantastic MS&PE conversion fodder for me when I ran more games (oh to have time to do so again... ). Sorcery became a 3pt Psychic Skill, with each GURPS spell converting to 1pt Spells-then ST was spent just as in GURPS, with high-ST spells needing multiple circles of Sorcerers, or an Ananthor to store ST for that Golem you're making, or Places of Power and Star Convergences to lower the ST cost...made quite a low-powered S&S game it did... It also didn't hurt that PCs had a similar range of stats in both-due to the difference between systems, a PC with DX 13 (Karate 15) in GURPS was pretty similar to DX 14 (Karate 1) in MS&PE, or an IQ 12 (Physics 16)in Gurps was pretty close to the MS&PE counterpart of IQ 12 (Physics 2). In short-didn't like the TFT/Gurps engine much, but place the T&T engine in the GURPS chassis and you had one SMOOTH ride! Oh, and the GURPS Witchworld sourcebook was my personal favorite of them all at the time BTW-worth a look if you can still find a copy...

Got rid of most of my gaming stuff quite a few years ago, but I picked up Melee and then The Fantasy Trip when they first came out and then a couple of the Microquest games Metagaming did; Treasure of the Silver Dragon, Treasure of Unicorn Gold.

If I back it, it will only be in PDF. Not that I object to backing the physical books, but since the most basic package including postage comes to about $60 US for me ($80 or so in the local currency, on current exchange rates), and nearly half of that is postage - yeah, hard copy is not going to happen... Unless I have a lotto win this weekend!

Played, GMed, and still have the books. My wife ran her King Arthur campaign using TFT.
TFT had a background similar to EPT crossed with Arduin, with most of the improv removed.

Its "background world" was in a faraway galaxy, colonized by Terrans who sorta pushed out the natives (that cliche never seems to get old), which suffered some oddball disaster which either spun it out of space or else super-aliens kidnapped Terrans and other intelligent species and dumped them on this world. After a long time, nobody remembered anywhere else. Magic or Clarke's Law existed. Magic, sword fights, and pulp stuff.
Could be Tekumel. Could be Arduin. Could be - What was TFT's world? Cidri? TFT had prootwaddles.
