Is there a rule of thumb for estimating the average number of combat rounds to be expected while combatting a monster of a particular MR? (This has to do with my investigation of the activation of spite for monsters of varying MRs.) Are there simply too many variables for this to be a practical question? Perhaps someone with the gearheady/mathy abilities can enlighten me.
Too many variables, and too much random. Armor and other small factors can make a combat draw out a long time, which is part of the reason for spite damage. Spite WILL wear out one side, or both, in a finite period. But, that period is still subject to a random roll of the dice.
Just the obvious point to make which is the closer matched the monster is to the delvers the longer it will take, barring magic use. Depending on spells available that can result in massive combat swings.
