So, last week I started playing in a 5e game at a local gaming shop with two other players who are complete RPG newbies and an experienced DM. Tonight, as I was literally about to drive off to the game, about a 45 minute drive, the DM messages to say he can't make it. I tried contacting the other two players with no luck as they have further to come and were already driving. What to do? I threw T&T in my bag and set off. With zero prep I ran an evening's session basically off the top of my head, making it all up as I went along. The players loved it, character creation took ten minutes and they got to do LOADS more stuff than in the 5e game the previous week. Other patrons in the shop kept asking what we were playing since so much fun was clearly being had.
God bless T&T, I can't think of another RPG you could run at such short notice and have the session up and running within 15 minutes even with total newbs.

Now that's an awesome story, mrballista! Two questions, if I may? 1) Which version did you elect to run? and 2) Based on your description I doubt you'll have a chance to post notes from the session but I'm curious, will you have a chance to run more sessions at your FLGS? Nicely done in keeping the torch burning!

That's an awesome story indeed! Tunnels and Trolls is a fantastic system because of its simplicity while still maintaining a perfect amount of crunch for the discriminating player! Well done mrballista!!!

My apologies for such a late response. ProfGremlin - I ran the immortal 5th edition, never equaled, never bettered. I ran three sessions in all before a more reliable 5e DM was found. But since then I've left that group, due to long travel times, but the players have recently asked if I could run a T&T game closer to home, which is great. From their feedback they really liked how my T&T game was much faster paced than 5e and based more on exploration and interacting with NPCs. That's partly a GM style issue, but they hated getting into combat in 5e because it took half the session to get through any encounter.
And they loved the T&T spell names :-)

It really doesn't need to be T&T versus D&D you know..

I don't think anyone (or at least, very few) here takes TOG versus TnT discussions very seriously, if it makes you feel any better.

I think it's affectionate rivalry rather than at daggers drawn. I certainly play both.

I think it's affectionate rivalry rather than at daggers drawn. That's how it seemed to me, as well. It also explains my feelings pretty well. I certainly prefer TnT but I've played TOG since it was first printed in the mid-70's.

You know, I think from a game creator's perspective, it wasn't so great that one made money and the other didn't. Often things are entwined. I remember one year on Trollhalla Ken pulled a very clever April Fool's joke by announcing he had embarked on a serious relationship. The next announcement was that she played Pathfinder. The third and final part was to say that he was switching to Pathfinder because it was a choice between sex and T&T. It wasn't T&T that scored the crit then )
