Good afternoon, All!
I happened to be looking through a list of book recommendations online and came across: Geoffrey P. Ward's Guide to Villainy. This looks like a fun read as I love fractured fairytales (Disclaimer: no, I haven't read it yet nor am I associated with the author or publisher). This is a book series available through your favorite online jungle retailer and, I assume, elsewhere. The fact that various reviewers are likening it to a self-help guide for villains is even funnier.
I realized that, while we have discussed fractured fairytale stories in various threads here on Trollbridge, we haven't actually dedicated a thread specifically to them. Well, I'm hoping to remedy that!
My favorites are written by Jim C. Hines. Specifically, the Princess Series. Think Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella meet Charlie's Angels interwoven with some of the darker themes from the Brothers Grimm. It's actually a well written, tongue-in-cheek rendition of the tales we thought we knew.
Tangential to that, and related to the current Monsters! Monsters! Kickstarter, I would humbly submit the trials and tribulations of Jig the Goblin in the Goblin Quest series. Talk about a reluctant hero...
In other media, I think Netflix Bright could be considered amongst these ranks. It's certainly not your average fairytale even if told in the setting of the modern world.
Also, Ella Enchanted is a good story with tropes turned upon their ear.
Of course, let's not forget my favorite movie of all time: The Princess Bride. A great story loaded with tropes and a great heart in the midst of it all. If you read the book, make sure it's the Good Parts version.
So, what stories, in any media, can we add to this list?
