Spotted on Twitter, we’re invited to create our own FRPG words …
Turn any real word into a fantasy name in three simple steps!
1) Turn any y’s into i’s.
2) Turn any one other vowel into a y, or add an e to make it a double vowel.
3) Throw a silent h in somewhere.
You’re whelcyme.

Pharmaceutical names are very suitable for the monikers of either demon lords or elvish nobility.

Pharmaceutical names are very suitable for the monikers of either demon lords or elvish nobility. I agree entirely with this stefanj. In my mini solo 'Soul Survivor' I used many chemotherapy drug names as the inspiration for the names of the demons

So funny you should mention that, Stefanj. I've been appropriating drug names for my campaign's history and its bad guys for years. I usually pick particularly obscure and sinister sounding drug names. Surprisingly, none of my players have figured it out yet.
Cheers -

Thye Blyee Pihll Tyveehrn Yup, sounds about right.... I like to either get a concept/quality and play with Google Translate to find interesting words in multiple languages then mix and match until it sounds/feels right. Another technique I've played with is dice generating strings of letters: 1) Roll 1d6: Odd=Vowels, Even=Consonants 2-Odd) Odd: Roll 1d6 - A,E,I,O,U,Y 2-Even) Write out all the consonants then roll 1d20. Count down the list for each roll, eg. if you roll a 5 count five letters into your list of consonants, in this case it would be a 'G'. 3) Find an interesting looking/sounding string of characters and play with it. Sure, the second technique can be time-consuming but no one ever said you had to throw the list away. Just strike through the sections of letters you've already used and keep the rest for your next imminent character creation

The Blue Pill Tavern, where you meet the Rock-Hard Demon, Viagra Or the street urchin Cialis, who rose through the ranks of the Thieves Guild to control the entire underside of the city, and became known as the Upright Man... (Hat tip to Raymond Feist.)

My preferred method is a double rotation cypher on the phonetic values... when I really need a fantasy name... is to shift vowels along one ring, and consonants on a second.
Vowels: a-e-i-o-u-y-æ-œ-ø-a shift all in name/word by 1d8 places. Or randomly drop 2 and rotate 6.
Consonants: convert hard c to k, soft to s, soft g to j, q to k or kw soft th to þ, hard th to ð, sh to š, ch or cz to č, the s in measure/pleasure to ž, x to ks, eliminate doubles... use b-č-d-ð-f-g-h-ȟ-j-k-l-m-n-p-r-s-š-t-þ-v-w-ý-z-ž-b but drop 4 randomly for the language then shift all others by 1d20. deleted letters shift right before the rotation. č ch as in check or cz as in Czech. š sh as in shoe ð th as in this or that þ th as in thin or thick ȟ russian X or german ch ž the s of measure or pleasure in American, or the french hard j. I'm using y as the long i (as in sky), and ý as the jotation (y in yes, you, yet) So Bogic transform becomes.. d8 gives 4, 4d20 for drops are 3. 17, 6, 1; rotation 6 Vowel Old: a-e-i-o-u-y-æ-œ-ø- New: u-y-æ-œ-ø-a-e-i-o- Consonant drop process in order St: b-č-d-ð-f-g-h-ȟ-j-k-l-m-n-p-r-s-š-t-þ-v-w-ý-z-ž- 03: b-č-ð-f-g-h-ȟ-j-k-l-m-n-p-r-s-š-t-þ-v-w-ý-z-ž- 17: b-č-ð-f-g-h-ȟ-j-k-l-m-n-p-r-s-š-þ-v-w-ý-z-ž- 06: b-č-ð-f-g-ȟ-j-k-l-m-n-p-r-s-š-þ-v-w-ý-z-ž- 01: č-ð-f-g-ȟ-j-k-l-m-n-p-r-s-š-þ-v-w-ý-z-ž-
O: bč-dð-f-g-hȟ-j-k-l-m-n-p-r-s-š-tþ-v-w-ý-z-ž- N: k -l -m-n-p -r-s-š-þ-v-w-ý-z-ž-č -ð-f-g-ȟ-j-
So, using it: Bill Boring becomes kæš kœýævn (sounds like Cash Keeyahvn). Monkey becomes bœvsya (beevseeah). and so on. For even more fun, pick classes of words and make the displacement rolls separately.

Good morning Trolls! mahrundl What is the R. Feist series you're referring to? How would you rate it 1-5 stars? Thank you. Aramis of Erak I like the way you approached the change in pronunciation.

hobu, it's the Riftwar Cycle. Specifically, the first 3 books - Magician, Silverthorn, and A Darkness at Sethanon - but there are something like 30 books in the whole collection.
I enjoyed those 3 books a lot - if I had to rate them, I'd give them about a 4 average (they did drag in a few places, in my opinion). I've read some of the other books, but they didn't grip me as much as the first 3.

Aramis of Erak I like the way you approached the change in pronunciation. It's easier done in code than on paper. Plus, I like excuses to use the archaic letters ð, þ, æ, œ. Using accents is pretty easy in MacOS and Ubuntu.
