I thought it might be interesting to share the background to our user names here. Mine, Zanshin, I got from the classic RPG Bushido, where it is a derived statistic controlling how many of your characters attacks are at full value. It is a term used in Japan , roughly translated, means combat awareness - literally 'remaining mind'. I practice martial arts and enjoy their use in RPGs so it was a natural marriage. I think I first used it on TBP site, and use that name wherever it's available on forums. Now, tell us the story behind your handle

Ah, well, you see, as a DM I had the habit of making 'too many' puns and comments in game. My players then decided that whenever it occurred, a cupboard just appeared with an annoying gnome in it which they then slammed the door on.

Sherman, set the Wayback machine for 1993. My username across most of the BBSs I could access, "Eightball." Including my roommate's. Then, the 1993 Disney 3 Musketeers (with Charlie Sheen) aired... and all of a sudden, most of my local BBS accounts were locked out and renamed Aramis, due to the similarity of look. (A similarity I don't see, BTW.) But I was stuck with it by collusion of local BBSs... and it grew on me.
Haven't knowingly spoken to any of them in almost 2 decades now.
Still using the Aramis.
WHen it became needful to differentiate from other Aramis', I took the abbreviations for my town & state of residence at the time... Eagle River, Alaska (AK)... thus "ERAK"

Mine was given to me in high school for never listening to anything but Black Sabbath. I dunno, in my defense I had a piece of crap, 1973 exploding Pinto for a car with a tape deck and only a few tapes to play in it...my car sucked, but at least I had good tunes...ha.

I was employed for a time within a large agency for a major nation. This particular agency has a larger than normal amount of geeks and in the cafeteria on Fridays you'd have tables playing various games: chess, Catan, TOG, MTG, etc. I had a training class which included a day on historic cryptography. When I saw the letter frequency phrase, I thought it'd be a perfect rpg character name: Etaion Shrdlu Cmfwyp.

My first PC in 2001, a Celeron 500 running Windows98SE. My first game for said PC, Red Alert II. After losing to the AI on Easy Mode twelve times in a row ( ), I decided to try the Online Mode and see if anybody else was quite as terrible as myself-and if not, to check out the related Forum for tips, then play Real-life opponents until I sucked less. Realistically assessing my skills, I proudly entered "Agent86" as my online handle. And much to my surprise, another Get Smart fan had beat me to it- missed it by that much! So I shifted the verb tense and the number, and christened my well-preserved self "order99" now and forever more... just one of those spur-of-the-moment things I guess, and I never saw a reason to change it. And now i've gone and killed the mystique, yes? Oh well....

I had been hanging out in the forums for Baldur's Gate (the original game) in the late 90s and was finally driven to make my first post - compiling a list of hints and easily-missed things for someone who had asked for such but had not received a reply. Making that post would require me to register as a user - I needed a name.
One thing I had noticed in that forum was a tendency to forget that the people posting in a thread were not the only ones reading it. I wanted a username that would remind people that their forum, like many others, had a substantial number of reader who seldom (or even never) posted. So I chose the name Lurker, and put a number after it, hoping it might suggest that there were others like me - reading, but not posting.

Mine's in honor of my first ever mmo character; that of Nebless-Clen Brown in Star Wars Galaxies.
Which in itself is a goof as it was suppose to be Nebless-Clem after a named Scottish Reiver in the 16th Cen., but via a typo (n vice m) and not catching it, Nebless-Clen I became.
Fun fact: Nebless is a Scot's nickname meaning nose-less so like all good nick names my character was a very short, fat Bothan with a huge nose.

Mine is a shortened version of my name on the sadly lamented T&T site Trollhalla; Darrgh Tarrrho. Darrgh Tarrrho is derived from the fact that I am a Doctor by profession and my surname begins with "O". At work I am often referred to as 'Doctor O' and if you keep repeating Darrgh Tarrrho it sounds a bit like that.

In the late '90's I did tech support for an ISP. We had limited availability to customize our workstations but one tweak I noticed many of my fellow techs were using was custom, Starcraft-themed mouse pointers. I liked the look and asked a co-worker to send me a copy. Well, the zip file was downloaded to the small 15MB of network storage space issued to me and then automatically decompressed. That network storage space was where my roaming profile was located so no matter what system I logged into, all my preferences and such were loaded. It was like virtual shrapnel ripped through that drive.
I started having all sorts of problems: system lag, freezing, apps crashing, you name it. I eventually got so frustrated I was having visions of using my keyboard to beat the monitor into submission. Local IT couldn't figure it out. They'd never seen anything like it. Through the course of this experience I decided I had two options: laugh or cry. I decided to embrace the gremlins I'd let loose on the network and laugh at their antics as they used the network for a jungle gym. Local IT eventually solved the issue by wiping my profile off the network and creating a completely new and unrelated one.
Around the same time I discovered one of my co-workers had a relative who worked with the US Marshals. They had access to create all sorts of interesting online accounts and such for backgrounds. I asked at one point if they could create email addresses at the CDC. The answer was 'Probably'. I then asked if it was possible to get ProfGremlin (at) CDC (dot) gov. Well, that never went anywhere, for obvious reasons, but the identity was born. Hey, if I was going to be adopted by a tribe of gremlins, I was certain they would need an archivist.
Interestingly, one of the side tasks I enjoyed in that job was building an internal website for my team with all the tips and tricks that weren't officially documented. Into that site I slid a single page dedicated to Glitch, the gremlin that inhabited the network. It was my hope that by giving him a place to play it would decrease the amount of issues elsewhere on the network. Now, I'll agree that correlation is not causation but I had fewer technical issues after creating that space.

Mine dates back to my AOL name in '91. speed was taken from my love of the Speed Racer anime and the number changed a bunch initially always with 1's and 0's before settling on 1000. Generally if you see speed1000 elsewhere on the internet, it is me, such as my bootleg music page. I have friends who knew me online for 18 years first by the name and have called me speed to my face.

I was a member of Dragonsfoot long, long ago before one or two forum crashes. Lost my original name and pass, and the Mod gave me a pre-generated name, but couldn't change it thereafter. Thus was born DungeonDevil.
