'Out of Character' area. Post any questions about game mechanics, anything not in character or chase up posts like 'where are you GM'? (Most likely in bed asleep as answer to the last one!)

IntroductionI'm Paul, been Gm'ing (and playing sometimes) various games since about 1981/2 (the start date is muddied in my head as there's been a bit of beer drinking since then). I found out about Tunnels and Trolls through the Gaming media at the time (White Dwarf, Imagine, Dragon, one or more of the three) but didn't get chance to try the game out until the Corgi paperbacks of 1986. It was a tough sell to my gaming group as they were years into D&D (BECMI and 1e AD&D) campaigns along with MERP and a whole host of one shots and non fantasy campaigns at the time. Time goes by, real life happens and gaming groups generally go their separate ways. I've been gaming online on various forums since the very early 2000s (Yahoo groups and gaming forums generally like RPG.net, Dragonsfoot and once or twice here amongst others). I've been running a play by post Supers campaign for the DC Heroes 3e/Blood of Heroes 2e game since 2009 and that is ongoing. Fantasy RPGs are an itch I have to scratch and having done some research I reckon Tunnels and Trolls may be one of the best ways to do it in a forum format. Combat tends to be the real sticking point so we may need to agree as a group how fights will be run. I would suggest I roll the dice on HERE to keep things flowing and you guys throw in actions/reactions/tactics/role playing/saving rolls on the in character (IC) thread. I'm only human and definitely not perfect so anything I miss, rules I get wrong, things that don't get done right whatever I shall correct and my default position is always to lean on the side of the Player Characters. The characters aren't immortal (otherwise you'd wade into every fight unarmed and naked and check your nails whilst the monster flails away impotently) so one of the house rules I suggested in the game pitch thread was that when a character expires you take the earned experience so far less 10% and apply it to a new character who will happen to wander past and join the party. Realism isn't the aim - having fun is - so I'm always open to suggestions about how things can be improved! My original plan was to convert the T&T solos to group play and that will happen at some point but the first adventure will be to get you started and iron out any kinks in the way we do stuff. When posting in character I would request the following format <Character Name> <What your character says, feels, does in character> maybe in italics to break up the eye bleeding wall of text. <Actions otherwise known as 'the Crunchy stuff'> An example: Roderick the UnfortunateRoderick crouched in the bushes. Having (finally) gotten over the wall and dropped into the undergrowth it was time to reap the rewards for his efforts!ACTIONSWait for clouds to obscure the moon then cross the grassed area to the base of the tower underneath the window of the tower and use his grappling hook to snag the ledge. Will check that the cloth around the arms of the hook are tight to muffle the noise then throw it.
Dex and/or Luck SR I guess? What Roderick doesn't know won't hurt him. Yet. Poor, poor Roderick. Anyway, breaking up the posts in this way makes it easier to read. I generally just quote a previous post, remove the BBCode gobbledigook and alter the text where required. I'll post more when I get chance and stick the house rules up. Always open to suggestions and ideas so if you have any, I'm all ears!

In real life I answer to John (also "hey you" and less complimentary things). I've been playing games since the 1970s, got Tunnels and Trolls around 1978 and continued to use the same version for around 20 years before moving to 5th. Not really looked at Deluxe until recently, but I am slowly coming around to some of the features in the later editions. I think the last game I GM'd was Everway, a long time ago and a strange experience. Looking forward to getting into the adventure.

My other name is Derek. Been RP-ing since discovering the D&D Red Box in about 1983. Mostly played D&D, and often as the DM. Also tried Cthulhu, Dangerous Journeys, Traveller, Gurps, Floating Vagabond, etc. Discovered T&T in lockdown and went straight in to DT&T, dragging my old RP crew with me.

Clarification: any character Type from DT&T is allowed, i.e. Rathmere is happy to hire Warriors, Rogues and Wizards? If so, I would like to trial my stats as an Adequate Wizard

There's stuff going on in the background (other than having to go to work and sleep). Feel free to figure out what Type/Kindred you want to play. Choose appropriate Talent and so on. As for equipment if you've played D&D at some point you'll recognise the equipment list. This is part one (Weapons and armour). A relatively short list but every place you visit will have slightly different stuff on offer. The cost is listed in three sections. The Left Hand price is the price marked on the parchment on the sellers' wall. If you don't haggle or haggle and fail your Saving Roll, that is the price you pay. If you attempt a Charisma SR at Level 1 and pass it you pay the middle price. Pass a Charisma SR at level 2 you pay the cheapest (Right Hand) price. Once I've typed up the Equipment list (along with No Haggle/Level 1 SR/Level 2 SR price) you should be able to round out the character. Should be tomorrow. Have to hit the sack for a 4:30am alarm...

- IQ12, DEX13, so he can cast up to 2nd-Level spells. 3rd-Level spells require IQ14/DEX14.
- He will likely have a Spell Focus of some sort to reduce WIZ cost by 1 point per level.
- Spellcasters regain lost WIZ at the rate of 1 point per regular (10 minute) turn. So 190 minutes (3hrs 10 minutes) from zero to full.
- Spells cost 1,000Gold/spell level to purchase from the Wizard's Guild.
- Can spend 300AP once per level to become an Adept in a school and reduce casting costs by 3 WIZ.
- Spell Knowledge: Firdle knows all the standard listed 1st-Level spells.
BackgroundHaving powerful wizards of great renown as your parents would be seen by some folk as rather 'cool'. However, for Firdle Starblaze it was more of a curse. Even his siblings were blessed with great dexterity and keen intellects, while he was considered, well, just, adequate.
After his preordained enrolment into the ?tbc? Wizards Guild, Firdle cheated, lied and blagged his way through years of study to finally graduate (on his third attempt) as what the High Magus referred to as "an adequate and rather uninspiring wizard, who will not amount to much beyond perhaps cataloguing books." Having always struggled with his wizardry, Firdle sometimes shamefully sabotaged rivals to make himself appear more competent than his peers. Once he resorted to using Tongue-Tied root in some tea, which left his fellow apprentices fumbling over their enchantments in a group test, thus making him stand out above the crowd.
Irked by the constant unflattering comparisons with his family and peers, Firdle soon left his home (and his family name) to prove to everyone that he was destined for greatness. To achieve this he is seeking out high adventure, just like in the storybooks his kind old grandpa used to read to him.

Talents Singing (+3) Will's story (in his own words): " I grew up on the family vineyard. As a nipper I thought I'd be stuck there forever. Near the farm was an old elf who'd been a delver, years ago. I loved hearing his tales of adventure in foreign parts. I got my strength hauling wine to his place.
"Last year we had a bad season. Something bad got into the wine. I fell ill drinking it. My constitution still ain't right. The family told me to leave the farm till I was better. The elf gave me some cash to get started as an adventurer, I dunno why.
" I'm a pretty good singer. We used music to set the ryhthm when we was treading the grapes, and people said I had a talent for it. I've earned a few coppers singing since I left the farm. Just enough to keep body and soul together.
"It was bad luck getting ill, but at least it got me off the farm. I'm strong for my age and I hope that will see me through. If I make a big score I'll kick back and enjoy life like that old elf. But I won't be drinking wine again."Possibly TMI but having decided to go with the numbers as rolled I wanted a vaguely credible backstory. Happy to reformat the stats as a table if that will help, or make changes to fit the planned story arc.

Great stuff, both! I've seen the check (failed). I was rushing when I posted yesterday (sack time) but you can have THREE attempts at bartering before the Merchant rolls his eyes and moves onto another customer. Cupboardgnome with that in mind you have earned 6API'll amend my signature on the site so that there is a link to the character sheets of all the players and a running total of AP/CON/WIZ and anything else that needs tracking. GP too I guess. As usual I am open to *any* suggestions and rule changes. The game is about you guys and your hapless Peasant Road Sweepers drive towards glory and fortune or the alternative (we don't want to dwell on that too much. At least generating a new character in T&T is quick). I'm going to cook up the remainder of the available equipment from the Merchant trader. Strangely enough that, too, will look an awful lot like the Equipment list from 1983's Basic Players handbook. Can you tell I was a fan yet? I just happen to think T&T is a better fit for a play by post game Hope that image (above) works as a link (click on it). If not this link HERE should give a link to the Equipment/Weapons list.

Done my shopping, updated Will's details except for a small query about AP. Wasn't sure if a separate SR was required for each item, which is the way I've done it. If the intention was one SR for all I will have to do a few small adjustments.
There will also be a sketch of Will, if he lives long enough for me to figure out how to upload it.

I've been tinkering with formatting my character information. Not quite there yet but I hope it will eventually be an easy to read summary that can be used as a template. Trouble is I normally post using a small tablet and it's a pain to work with BBCode on that. Happy to carry on it it is any use.
