So I'm thinking up ideas for my next campaign while the current one is sputtering out (GMed by someone else; great guy, lousy GM).
I was reminded of the old pencil & paper racing game en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racetrack_(game) and wanted to work it in somehow. My first thought was hoverboard racing with planks cut from a magic tree, but wasn't coming up with a good way to work it in.
Then yesterday I encountered one of our local Motorcyle Clubs out enjoying the weather and I knew exactly how to work the racing game in:
Our party is relaxing in a road-side inn when the sound of thunder is heard approaching from the west. A glance through the open door shows a bright sunny afternoon. Then the broomers start pulling off the road. Big, ugly, dressed in leather, riding some of the wildest looking brooms you've ever seen. The lead broom whips a few dust devils before the rider dismounts near the door. As he walks up the steps to where you're standing in the doorway he grins and you can count 5 dead flies stuck to his teeth...
It shouldn't be hard to steer the storyline into a party member being challenged to prove him/herself by a race on a loaned broom.
