I'm currently using Acrobat v.5 to make pdf files.
But things have moved on a bit since that version. I keep getting a message that I really should upgrade. Are there cheaper alternatives out there? What are people here using?

I use BCL EasyPDF which is a free download! You can't edit a PDF but it does a fine job of converting a Word doc (or whatever) to a PDF.
Hope that helps.

Cool. It says it puts a "watermark" on the output after 30 days if you don't register. Is there any way of turning that off?

From my understanding registration is free, I just supplied my email address and they send an activation code. If that's changed try googling "create PDF + freeware". There are several free PDF products out there.

I use Primo PDF. Works just fine for me. I get instructions to register every 30 days or so, but I just hit 'escape' and that's that! It's a free shareware download, and I would recommend it.

Oli, I currently use PrintoPDF,for the MacOS9 system. However if you're on a Mac( OSX ) a Linux or a Windows box, I recommend Openoffice. It reads Text and .doc files, RichText and a few others i've never heard of, does spreadsheets and other stuff(a full Office suite, to be brief)-and it's free. Best of all-when you're done with your files, you can hit the PDF icon and convert the whole thing to PDF format...not sure if it does Bookmarks or indexing, and you can't edit the PDF once you're done-but did I mention it was FREE? ;D

Boozer,
One read recently that Primo PDF can cause problems on Windows 98 systems. Not necessarily system-wrecking problems, but apparently it's a very good idea to check the website before installing it on one's Windows 98 box.
Not saying it isn't a good product, just that one should make sure that one checks out the site first. But one would, wouldn't one?
One has no idea why one started referring to oneself as 'one' in this post.

On Mac OSX you can make a PDF of anything you can print. On the print dialogue there is a button [PDF], it's so easy!

OSX is 'the business'. Should be getting a new Mac in the next couple of months. Can't wait!

I got a G5 iMac two Octobers ago. I have no interest in "using" a Windows PC ever again. Even using the PC at work just a few minutes a day seems painful.

I'm with you WSmith, I had to revert to Windows 18 months ago - it's been agony the whole time. Never again!

Took me about 3mths to make the transition, but now I wouldn't go back. Had to use xp for the first time last week and it was just plain hard work.
Do you know you can make PDFs (and other file types) of parts of the screen by pressing Apple-Shift-4, then click and drag over the area you want.

Hey Mac users!
What would you choose: a new Intel iMac or a cheaper 'off the shelf' PowerPC iMac?
