I was just contacted by a new local gaming group. The previous group sorta-kinda fell apart, and it had some problems anyway. For one, none of the other players had ever met/played with a female gamer before, and fell all over themselves trying not to treat me like a freak. And failed, and made me very uncomfortable in the process. The GM had a tense relationship with his wife, and I think some of that got projected onto me. In any case, it wasn't my idea of an ideal situation.
So now I'm looking at a new opportunity with all new people. I admit to some amount of trepidation, but it's better to think positive and hope for a fresh start. One of them wrote to me this morning and introduced the group members:
Lenny is an experienced GM.
Frank is a writer and brand new to gaming, and in fact he's only played once, but he's eager to play some more.
Jeff has played before and leans toward the 'hack and slash' style.
Rich used to play D&D when he was a kid and is excited to take it up again, and wants to know what these 'other games' I referred to are like.
Hmmm... I dunno... sounds pretty good. Newbies! I can deal with newbies. The bad thing about newbies is that they don't yet have a sense of the possibilities. The good thing is that they're wide open for other gamers to introduce them to these possibilities. If I can get in there and influence Frank's open, hungry mind with ideas beyond the hack'n'slash variety, and if GM Lenny is able to cooperate... it could be good!
And I think these guys might be more open to a game of T&T than the previous bunch, who'd been playing D&D since they were 12 and were still at it. Rich sounds open to it, at least. I guess it'll all depend on Lenny.
