I was just reading through the Wikipedia entry for Tunnels & Trolls again, and for the first time in several readings, this line jumped out at me (although I'm certain it's always been there): Corgi Books in the United Kingdom produced mass-market paperback-sized versions of the core rulebook as well as many of the solo adventures (occasionally with adult content removed), a format which paved the way for the renowned Fighting Fantasy series of gamebooks. Say what??? What is the writer talking about? I've got a pretty hefty amount of original T&T stuff, and I don't recall anything needing to be censored. Can anyone shed a little more light on what this article is trying to say? Or is this just an edit goof, perhaps intended to make T&T sound "better" than what it is? Thanks, guys.

News to me too, Fenris. I'd guess that we're talking pictures rather than text, since the Corgi stuff had Josh Kirby as the artist, and is reasonably tame in terms of blood, gore and titillation.
But I don't have both versions of the solos to compare, so I can't be sure.

That's weird. I dunno.
I have the Corgi 5th edition rulebook and I have one Corgi solo (City of Terrors), but I don't have the Flying Buffalo version of it to compare.
I'd be more willing to bet it was violent content that was edited (if any), since the UK and Europe too are more open-minded about sexual material/matters than we are in the States.

It was things like in Deathtrap Equalizer and Beyond the Silvered Pane where there are opportunities for horizontal jogging with amazons/the goddess of love/sorceresses with polar bears. In the Corgi BSP the Amazon 'finds something in you to admire...' - and i was hoping for so much more

There are things such as the sexual encounter in City of Terrors that were removed as well as the alteration to spell names, which was more about the "silly" nature of the originals rather than anything else. You wouldn't imagine that T&T needed a bowdlerized version, would you?

I'm notorious for it Likewise. There are several boards where I've signed up, read at least semi-regularly, but have never posted. And a few where I've fallen badly behind on my reading as well. (Sorry, Vin! I'm glad that the OD&D boardis going well, even if I'm not participating at present.)

The explanation can be found in one of Raven's issues (a UK fanzine for T&T), where you have that interview with Mike Stackpole saying that Corgi Books complained about the sexual content of Caravan to Tiern, which is why he had it edited by Andrea Mills. I'd like to see the original Caravan to Tiern one day...

Even though I live in the States, my first T&T book was a '86 Corgi edition I bought in '90. For years I thought the spell names were annoyingly stupid...... But then I finally got a Flying Buffalo edition. Oh... Imagine my surprise. "Oh. Good. They're worse." Which makes my Corgi book my "go to" for spells.

Which makes my Corgi book my "go to" for spells. The oddest thing about the spell list is that the Corgi edition still retains the name of Yassa-Massa. Presumably the editor missed that one...

I expect that 'Yassa-Massa' wouldn't necessarily register to a Briton the way that it does to USA citizens. It didn't immediately register for me as an Australian, although the fact that I was only about 13 - and largely ignorant of US history and culture - when I first encountered it probably factors into that.

Yep. I was comparing the two lists yesterday, and I thought: "Wow. If their intent was to gid rid of the silly spell name, they didn't quite succeed." There's still more than a few that are unchanged. Odd, that.
