Another chance to play T&T at a great con is coming in February. Strategicon on Presidents Day Weekend. I will be running an introductory 6th ed adventure. I have prizes and booze.

I had a terrible time at Xanadu Vegas. I guess the con was good overall, but I am a game nerd and there was very little gaming at Xanadu. I had ZERO plyers at my scheduled T&T sessions. This is partly the fault of the con, as it is not gaming focused. However, I rarely have anyone but immediate friends sign up for the T&T games I run at Strategicon. I am a decent GM, and the game and material speak for themselves, but T&T has no reputation. Why doesn't "that guy" at "that company" get together with Indie Press Revolution and get T&T some exposure? Why is Rick Loomis such a tool? Why don't people love T&T? I am beginning to dislike it because it is making my con sessions SUCK ASS! I want to give away the prizes I bought. I want people to play T&T and have fun. Maybe I want more than T&T wants, but after Gamex in May, I am done trying to push the lame horse past the finish line. I will play and promote something else. =(

Relax! T&T was never meant to be a flagship game for a major company. It was designed as a game to be played by players. You will notice that all of the 'big popular games' have tons of expensive advertisig from the company that produces them. Their game sessions are sponsored by the company as well. No matter how smart the average gamer is they are still subject to being attracted to the shiny toy and want to be part of the 'in crowd'. Personally I would not go to a major (or even tertiary con) and promote any game for free. I leave the promotions to the producers. I don't even wear t-shirts with logos because I think I should get paid to advertise for a corporation. The days of fan driven game promotion are over (if they ever really existed). T&T is not going to become a contender for the spotlight and I don't think it needs to be. Even the 800 pound gorrilla that is D&D keeps having to remake itself every few months to keep revenue flowing. I went to GenCon once and that was enough (bought my copy of T&T there and met Ken).

Rick Loomis has been actively supporting Free RPG Day with some wonderful material. I may be biased (not really), but T&T's Free RPG Day material is always the best (rich of content and complete). The game keeps a steady and faithful audience. I have been very happy to see the number of people being exposed to the game go up. Just look at the membership to this board! Wow! I contend that the years of fan driven game promotion are not over yet. T&T would have vanished by late 80's without a handful of us taking it to the web. T&T community can build up a lot of buzz to keep T&T alive. To increase advertising dollars, the community needs to support the game with either free advertising or by purchasing available published material. The reality, role playing games are just as much a business as a hobby. Advertising dollars only make sense when the market exists to support spending money. The future business model of Role Playing Games by necessity will merge with the on line communities and perhaps creating local gaming clubs. (Different from a bunch of people just getting together for fun. A non-profit place requiring dues to maintain a building and gaming library) I contend T&T has been at the fore front of this change with places like Trollbridge and Trollhalla. Only no single business has been focused on the change. Last year several of us got together at Rick's annual FBInc Event to start TrollCon I. It was a wonderful blend of new players and the original crowd. I truly hope Rick is able to entice the same people to this year's event. But more importantly, I hope more people can make the trip. Oh, and don't confuse RPG with computer games like WoW. As much as I love computer games, I have not seen a single true RPG come out of programs yet. Computer games tend to function more like T&T Solos (ala Choose Your Own Adventure). The PvP portion of these games tend to be a brawl fest instead of scenario driven adventure.

Good points Skulltosser. I stand corrected on several areas. I have been trying to get a gaming group together and it is an uphill battle. Perhaps spring is a poor choice of seasons for such an endeavor.
I agree on computer MMORPG, they fail in the RPG area. Collecting the same drops and completing the same quest as 50,000 other people is not role playing.

With regards to fan-driven communities and games, the retro-clones are doing very well indeed and those are strongly fan-driven. Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, OSRIC, and many others have made quite a name for themselves in a relatively short time.
The old-school game community in general is having quite a revival and it has nothing at all to do with large companies. Heck, last months issue (#4) of Fight On! magazine was won first place in a contest on Lulu. What's more, issue #3 was 150 pages...a 150pg magazine. Wow. #4 was 122pgs. That's a lot of old-school community goodness right there.
While I still contend there at least needs to be a leading force (such as FBI or FDP or...someone), it's the T&T community at large to which the grass-roots-level promotion will fall. It needant be at a Con. Find some newbies to gaming, or at least some folks who already love fantasy PC games like WoW, or perhaps some existing gamers who normally play a more recent game and just give them a wild-n-wooly one-shot game and you may find some new T&T fans.
The T&T community should probably get involved with the general old-school renaissance community in general. Fight On! would very likely accept T&T articles and adventures.
EDITED to add to some points.

I'll be at GenCon this year if any T&T fans are interested in meeting up. I won't be running any "official" games but I'll probably run a few pickup games of T&T 5th, OD&D, and/or B/X D&D and would also love to play any of the above. Feel free to contact me: driver dot scott at gmail dot com. [There's a small chance I'll hit Origins for a day or two as well. That chance would become larger if I knew there would be other T&T or old D&D fans there. ]

T&T is a small, independent press game. Brennan Taylor over at Indie Press Revolution is doing wonders for the indie game community. He sells indie games for small publishers. T&T is an independant game. FBI has always been small potatoes, but I would argue that "that company" is even more so. If T&T was for sale on IPR, it would get good exposure. That would likely create new fans. If you have not been to IPR, you are missing out on some awesome games. www.indiepressrevolution.com As far as the cons go, one of my biggest frustrations is that I purchased some prize support at a discount and gave my word that I would give it out at cons. I am finding this difficult when I have no players. I hope that the game I run at Gamex in May has more than just my friends attending. If so, I am giving the remainder away.
