sorry if this was discussed already - i haven't been very active here lately (too much work). anyone check out fight on! fanzine? two issues out now via lulu. while it is for [oop editions for that other game that must not be named ] , it just has a great old-school vibe to me that compliments T&T really well. really strong articles that are pretty easy to incorporate to T&T, and a great price for the size of the mag (latest issue was bigger than HH for half the price...). i am not affiliated with FO! in any way (and i support HH too) - i've just been really inspired by FO! and was curious what other people think....anyone?

I haven't seen it myself, but I understand that it's been well received by the old-school D&D crowd. It has, as far as I can determine, nothing to do with the current version of any product produced by Wizards of the Coast, nor any of TSR's Advanced D&D editions.
I'm not a big fan of the contemporary system using that game's name...

Like the rest of you, I've not seen it. I have, however, been meaning to grab them both.
Indeed they are focused on either classic D&D and AD&D, but also on system-generic ideas and articles as well. I've heard nothing but great things about it.

gamepunk26, No way. Labyrinth Lord all the way. It is clearly the BEST old-school game in print, and not mearly a d20 iteration of old-school play, but a perfect clone of B/X. 100% free. www.goblinoidgames.com/labyrinthlord.htm

If you use Basic Fantasy with Fight On, note that they treat armour differently.
Basic Fantasy uses 'ascending Armour Class' ie higher numbers represent better protection. An unarmoured normal human has AC 11.
Fight On uses 'descending Armour Class' ie lower numbers are better. An unarmoured normal human has AC 9.
So to convert:
Basic Fantasy AC = (20 minus Fight On AC) or
Fight On AC = (20 minus Basic Fantasy AC).

There is a forum for discussion of Fight On! here on my OD&D Discussion board, if anyone is interested.

Hopefully for sale soon in your FLGS. For OD&D though, I prefer the Rules Cyclopedia. I like BFRPG because the unified d20 mechanic is easier to use than the old THAC0 system. It is easier for my noobs to grasp.

He's done a fine job and I'm glad it's being recognized. I grabbed the hardbound through Lulu and it's nice. Real nice. I'm probably even going to buy another copy. Now see...with all this talk about it, I'm gonna go and spend even more money. Another copy of LL and both issues of Fight On!. And this after I just bought four copies of 5th ed. T&T this week alone. Sheesh.... ;D

Don't forget OSRIC. Even if 1st edition AD&D clones aren't your speed, it was OSRIC that first opened the box from which so many other fine systems have since emerged.
OSRIC 2nd edition is due out soon-ish, by the way - proof-reading is currently in progress. It should be worth a read.

I just use my old red/blue/turquoise/black/silver sets, thank you.
Best old school game in print is T&T, above and beyond edition wars.

Best old school game in print is T&T, above and beyond edition wars. True dat! But there's something really cool about the whole retro-clone movement. I'm a big fan of LL and am patiently awaiting OSRIC. Hats off to Dragonsfoot, though. It kept old-school gaming alive and well long before any retro-clones with adventures, e-zines, and supplements. All for free.
