I've just started a play-by-forum game on the giantitp.com forums (best known as the home of the Order of the Stick webcomic).
So far it's been much easier to organise than face-to-face role-playing. Also, despite never having done it before, I've found GMing easy so far. There's no pressure to make a quick decision, and it seems to need much less preparation.
Has anyone tried this type of role-playing before?

I've played several games on playbyweb.com. Over the last 10 years almost all my games have been either played there or through play-by-email.
I have found two types of players out there: 1) Fast responders - 2-3 times a day is a steady day. When these players get excited and enjoy the game they want to post 5+ times a day. Games move fast. 2) Steady responders - 2-3 times a week is common. Sometimes these players can be pushed into once a day. Normally RW keep these players from posting more.
