Does it work okay having a GM host a game through a chatroom? I've wanted to give something like that a go for a while. If someone made a Yahoo! club for the game would folks be interested in sending their characters?
Any pros and cons I've not considered?
If it looks like a cool idea then maybe I'll try to run a chatroom or play-by-post game on Yahoo! sometime.

i've run play-by-post games for several years now. one was html-based (people emailed me and i posted them) and the other via yahoo. either works quite well, in my opinion. yahoo is easiest, of course, but it does allow you to host pics and files for the players to reference. if you'd like addresses for the groups, let me know and i'll give them to you to see for yourself.

I also like some of the play by web sites out there. Those sites usually provide online dice for players to make their rolls. Play by email gaming almost requires GM to make all die rolls. Not necessarily bad unless the players enjoy making rolls themselves.

I've not done chat gaming, but have done other online GM'ing with online dice rollers and online maps, with game turns submitted by email. It worked reasonably well, but started to take more time than I wanted to give it. I've also played a game on the Blue Frog Tavern Yahoo group, and that worked well. The GM allowed us players to make our own dice rolls and just tell him what we rolled--the honor system. That probably wouldn't work with every group of players, but it seemed to work fine for us. The turns were sometimes very few and far between, and other times there would be a deluge of turns posted. But it was cool, because we were able to play within the constraints placed on us by our real world lives.

I'm currently running a game on the giantitp.com forums. So far it's worked a lot better than face-to-face games.

Hmm, interesting. I imagine combat would take a while to resolve on occasion. Using the MR system I guess monsters would vanish quickly once they've taken a few bruises and their fighting ability drops. I think I'd want to roll dice for players. Partially because not all delvers are fair (most of us are but you never know) and partially because it would mean that if a player couldn't post for one turn you could include them in the group's combat roll and simply tell them if they've been whacked or scored points later. Keep bashing those trolls and I'll be in touch when I've considered what I've read so far. If I ran some kind of game would anyone want to play? PS - Will also drop by some other games and see id I can join in

Combat is terribly slow on play-by-post games. I've normally allowed players 3 rolls and personal descriptions of their fighting style. Some of my most memorable combats have been on-line.

The forum I use has a feature where you can enter something like [roll]d6[/roll], and the message will show a result like (d6):4.

I've long been tempted to do an online game via blog or message board but just haven't yet. I'm a little scared that it might eat up far too much time.
